Old Fashioned Things

Inspired by the lovely grandparent thread really. And I think there was a heart-warming thread in S&B a while back, but I was thinking about those lovely old fashioned soothing things that older people did, that I never had enthusiasm or time for, but now do as some of my life's chaos has abated (I'm mid 50s now)
I love routine now, and I love lavender bags, and having a bath in the evening then sitting in my fluffy dressing gown and doing a crossword. I would like to be the Nan who's house has lovely baking smells, and who always wears the same (haven't found it yet, but light) perfume, that they'll remember me by when they are older.
I like carrying a tray of tea upstairs, not just a mug in each hand. It's a lovely soothing morning ritual.
What are yours?

My beautiful gravy boat.

I love lavender and a hot bath! I'm very much a pyjama kind of gal but this summer I'm going to get some long cotton nighties.

I've got a small teapot and I need to start using it. We need to soothe!

MrsTophamHat · 28/03/2021 17:52

I really want a teapot too. Definitely share the desire for a proper breakfast table. We do this a bit at weekends when we're going out for the day (covid aside). We have a big breakfast with orange juice and eggs and bagels as a brunch but i'd love to make more of it.

I love making porridge in a pan rather than a sachet. It reminds me of cosy ready brek adverts.

Sheerdetermination · 28/03/2021 19:15

I’m not sure. I think it might take a bit longer. The whistle is worth the wait though. And waiting is nice and old fashioned too...

RosesAndHellebores · 28/03/2021 22:59

I am happy to be Mrs his name, surname.

Runs ......................

SarahAndQuack · 28/03/2021 23:01

That's not really old-fashioned, though. You should be Mrs HisInitial Hisname. My elderly cousin wrote to my mum as Mrs David until the day she died.

(NB, when I first read the Anne of Green Gables books, I assumed that when they talked about 'Mrs Charlie Sloane' or whoever, it was some quaint nickname - which I suppose it is - and never connected it with this.)

@user1471538283 If it's long white cotton nightdresses you're after do take a look at Powell Craft. I have a few and I love them.

^ my username Grin

We always use a teapot with loose leaf tea. Tea goes into a tea caddy. Milk comes in bottles.

I use a proper wooden mushroom and darning yarn to darn socks rather then throw perfectly good socks away when the heel wears through.

We use soap and soap dishes.

Try to buy glass, wooden or metal tools and utensils rather than plastic.

Bed has blankets not a duvet.

Living room and dining area furniture is vintage Ercol.

All the above was done to increase reuse and reduce plastic (except the duvet, that’s because I sleep very hot) but it’s made the home very cosy as well.

What’s noticeable is the less branding I see (because less packaging) the calmer the house feels. Packaging by its nature is supposed to catch your attention so when there’s a lot of it around it’s like a crowd metaphorically shouting.

I have recently discovered that I like sherry, blocks of soap (rather than hand wash) and table cloths. I am thinking of adding afternoon tea to my repertoire.
Over the last couple of years DH has started changing in to comfy pyjamas and slippers as soon as he comes home from work and using an old fashioned cut throat razor so he is just as bad as me.
I have also noticed that over the various lockdowns we have got in to the habit of having Sunday roast every week and taking a flask of coffee if we go for a walk.

knackeredcat · 29/03/2021 15:56

Port. I like a nice drop of port - www.aldi.co.uk/10-year-old-maynard%27s-port/p/048129243988900

Thymeout · 29/03/2021 17:55

Pear's soap. The translucent brown ones. Much better than body-wash.

Face-flannels.

I've never given up sherry. Spirits don't agree with me. Was shocked to discover a pub where they didn't sell it.

OooPourUsACupLove · 29/03/2021 19:45

I love dry sherry with smoked almonds.

Ooo another old fashioned thing...we don’t use kitchen roll, we use cloths made from old towels and sheets that get washed and reused.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/03/2021 19:50

Only this week I used an old pair of my large white cotton knickers for dusting. They would otherwise have gone in the recycling fabrics bag.

I just thought "re-use is better than recycling" which is a modern saying for things that our older relatives did naturally.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/03/2021 19:51

why is there a link to Aldi in this thread? Is someone being paid??

MrsBDarcy · 29/03/2021 22:57

I like my egg slicer that is like a little banjo

ShaunaTheSheep · 30/03/2021 18:53

I've just bought a rubber bath mat. I have high hopes for it not going mouldy like the plastic ones. DD said it looks like it it belongs in an old people's home.

Stratfordplace · 30/03/2021 19:06

Hollowtalk that reminded me of my nan but she used to have a Guinness at 12 whilst cooking her lunch

Wateruniform · 30/03/2021 21:19

I take great pleasure in 'doing the flowers'. After the shopping is all delivered and put away on Saturday morning, I love going round collecting vases and jugs from round the house, feeling gently pleased that I own a collection of different vases and jugs. Then taking all the flowers gently out, throwing away the dead ones, refreshing those which will go another week by trimming their stems, then adding lots of new flowers and greenstuff from the big bunch that comes with the shopping.

I am basically now ASMR-ing myself purely through typing.
