Old Fashioned Things

Inspired by the lovely grandparent thread really. And I think there was a heart-warming thread in S&B a while back, but I was thinking about those lovely old fashioned soothing things that older people did, that I never had enthusiasm or time for, but now do as some of my life's chaos has abated (I'm mid 50s now)
I love routine now, and I love lavender bags, and having a bath in the evening then sitting in my fluffy dressing gown and doing a crossword. I would like to be the Nan who's house has lovely baking smells, and who always wears the same (haven't found it yet, but light) perfume, that they'll remember me by when they are older.
I like carrying a tray of tea upstairs, not just a mug in each hand. It's a lovely soothing morning ritual.
What are yours?

Grin I was about 23 when I started doing that! I only don't do it now, come to think, because when DD was a baby I was worried about her licking at it (she was a mouthy baby). I could probably do it again.

TheRedShoes75 · 27/03/2021 20:34

I LOVED that thread. I really got into Fenjal products as a result and I use the body wash, body spray and moisturiser now. I also bought myself a little tea tray, big enough for a cup of tea and a biscuit. I was so sad when the thread petered out.

Now that it's mentioned I brought a little tea tray the other week, it gives me such a feeling of ... this makes so much sense when I carry my cup of tea to bed of an evening.
@SarahAndQuack can I ask you, what sort of oil did you use? I really want to start doing it.
Love this sort of thread, growing older is a celebration of life.

Just thought of another one.

At Christmas, I brought Sherry! We had it as an aperitif before the Christmas meal. It’s definitely a new (old) tradition.

SpeckledyHen · 27/03/2021 21:29

I made a peg-bag during the first lockdown for something to do instead of storing them in an old ice cream container.
I nearly made a pinny until I realised that I already had 4 that hadn’t been worn .

SpeckledyHen · 27/03/2021 21:33

I have just decided to buy a fountain pen ✒️ and a bottle of blue-black ink for old times sake .

My mum's 91 and has a glass of sherry every morning at about 12 o'clock - puts the lunch on and sits with her crossword and sherry while she's waiting for it to cook. Grin

Real hankies with embroidered flowers in one corner.
Dumplings and Pearl barley
Polishing shoes which we still do

felulageller · 27/03/2021 21:58

I like French fancies.

We played a record from the 70s on a record player tonight.

PattyPan · 27/03/2021 23:22

I have these! Some of them have my name on them too. They’re the only thing I iron Grin

StarlightLady · 28/03/2021 07:59

Aside from the coldest winter months, l still wear stockings and suspenders. And not for anyone else’s entertainment. If you go for good quality such as Fantasie or Pour Moi they are so comfy.

It’s a shame that they have gained a sleaze reputation with lots of rubbish products not fit for purpose.

DinosApple · 28/03/2021 08:56

I use talcum powder, I feel like an idiot now for letting it slip out of my life from age 10-38.
Dry yourself, still a bit chilly? Sprinkle on the talc. Instantly warm and dry.
Rose perfume, lavender oil.
I, too, have the embroidered hankies with the tiniest cross stitch you've ever seen. Definitely not for blowing your nose!

Fourmoos · 28/03/2021 09:06

Knitted tea cosy on the pot. Wear a pinafore in the kitchen. Do cross stitch. Do the crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

@Fourmoos are you me? I also have a butter dish but haven't used it for a while as I'm the only butter eater in the house now. I use real hankies but large ones!

Giggorata · 28/03/2021 10:05

Leaf tea, teapot, tea cosy, butter dish, gravy boat, milk jug, soda crystals, lavender and rose oil, check.
Imperial Leather and Pear,s soap (smells like my DGM and DM)
Wright's Coal Tar and carbolic soaps (started re using the latter two for hand washing re Covid),
original high level cistern in outside loo (which flushes better than any other loo),
boil washes in a baby burco for tea towels and dishcloths (just love the smell)
and proper wound clocks, (whether they keep good time or not, I like the tick and the chimes.)

RosesAndHellebores · 28/03/2021 10:29

When we can I might reinstate grannie's coffee set when we have visitors.

Lobelia and white alysum edging plants :)

Mosaic123 · 28/03/2021 10:32

I keep beautiful bars of soap in my underwear drawers. It makes the contents smell lovely.

bugaboo218 · 28/03/2021 10:57

I think I am turning to my darling Granny. I have the following old fashioned things, which I personally love.

Rose or lavender bubble bath.

Fenjal

Bone china cup with a tea tray just for me.

Teapot

Butter dish and butter knife

Three tier cake stand

Cheese dome and cheese knife

I use talcum powder

Nivea in the blue tub

Long cotton nighties in summer

Pure wool slippers with velcro across the middle

A (modern style) shopping trolley

Love the garden centre

Love going for a drive pref by myself.

My sister jokes that I am old before my time.

I could feel myself relaxing as I read this post. Aaahhh!

purplebagladylovesgin · 28/03/2021 11:36

I have a tea pot and butter dish and milk jug. I only use leaf tea with China cups. I wear an apron to bake and cultivate a vegetable garden and grow my own herbs. I use glass Pyrex casserole dishes with lids own a peg bag and enjoy Sherry a few times a month. I use a cake stand for afternoon tea in the summer stand.
I also wear stockings. Have soaps in a dish in the bathroom and I use lavender bags in my knicker drawer.
I didn't consider myself old fashioned but maybe I might be. I'm early 50's but thinking about this my grandmother enjoyed similar things and she would have been well over 100 by now.

Standrewsschool · 28/03/2021 12:26

Old Charm furniture - ie. dark wood.

Photo isn’t my house.

Also off to seek out my butter dish. I know I have one somewhere.

Wallabyone · 28/03/2021 13:07

@Fnib We try to keep them in a big reusable bag now so that they are easier to locate, as they have a tendency to disappear with the children's books!

Swipeleftagain · 28/03/2021 14:42

@Sheerdetermination does the stovetop kettle take a lot longer to boil than an electric one? I’m considering one but I’d be impatient for my tea!

PeskyRooks · 28/03/2021 17:20

I was on the old thread so I've already listed all my granny tendencies but I just wanted to be the first to recommend you get yourself a damage catalogue. The flannel bedsheets, the blankets in pastel with the ribbon edging, nighties, slips, and the Doreen bra, all to die for!
