Shops opening until 10pm... any point?

With the announcement that trading hours will be until 10pm when non essential retail opens, I wondered if anyone would make use of this?

I can imagine places such as Merryhill and Bluewater being full in the first week. And IKEA.

TurquoiseDragon · 26/03/2021 21:49

Yes. I would. I work full time and rarely get a chance to shop during the week, and weekends can be too busy at times.

SoWhyNot · 26/03/2021 21:49

Considering many people make use of 24 hour stores, I’m sure they will. It means it will spread out the numbers over a longer period so can only be a good thing.

RedcurrantPuff · 26/03/2021 21:50

The shopping centres near me are all open to at least 9pm anyway in normal times.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 21:54

Home Bargains and Lidl are both open until 10pm here, Tesco until Midnight.
I assume non essential retail will be looking to maximise sales in any way possible when they reopen.
I am sure after all this an 8pm trip to the shops will be very appealing to a lot of people, especially those that work all day.

Great way to re-coup lost money and to avoid overcrowding during the day.

Places like the Trafford Centre have always opened till 10.

DianaT1969 · 26/03/2021 21:57

It will be popular with Primark shoppers who don't want to queue.

MrsFezziwig · 26/03/2021 21:58

Absolutely I would. I already do my supermarket shopping in the evening, it’s so much more quiet and relaxing.

Orchidflower1 · 26/03/2021 21:58

I would rather go later when it’s quieter. Is opening time changing to?

ssd · 26/03/2021 21:59

Not great for the workers though?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/03/2021 22:02

it simply means shops are allowed to stay closed down until 10pm Monday to Saturday, but on Sunday they can still only stay closed down until 4pm.

Heyahun · 26/03/2021 22:02

Love going to the shops late - always way quieter.

I really don't understand what that means but I would go shopping in the evening. I've not long been back from the supermarket tonight.
LaurieFairyCake · 26/03/2021 22:08

I will definitely be going

Why wouldn't it be great for the workers - I'm sure so many will be desperate to earn money - my niece has been on furlough and is only getting £800 a month, in normal times she gets £1500 with overtime - she is literally desperate to get back Grin

Why?

Not everyone wants to or can work 9-5. There are countless careers where people work evenings or indeed nights.

Most corner shops stay open later than 10pm, many supermarkets are open 24/6 ...I’ve never heard any particular concerns over the welfare of their staff. Most likely it will be shifts 8-4pm 4pm-10pm or an option to condense hours into fewer day etc. I’ve had jobs on nights or 18 hour shifts. I don’t see what the issue is to be honest.

CovidCorvid · 26/03/2021 22:09

They should scrap Sunday trading laws while they’re at it. Will be safer having longer opening hours on a Sunday as people in supermarkets will be more spread out over a longer period. I was amazed they didn’t do this a year ago.

ssd · 26/03/2021 22:10

The issue is if you normally work till 6 you probably won't Want to work till 10pm.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 26/03/2021 22:10

I've just read this and was confused - I had no idea they weren't already allowed to open until whatever time they want. Those in my local shopping centre closed at 8pm or 9pm pre covid (extending to 10pm in the weeks before Christmas). I'm aware of Sunday trading laws, is there a rest of the week law I didn't know about?

Titsywoo · 26/03/2021 22:11

Definitely - people who work can then use the shops in the evening during the week and the weekend won't be a complete nightmare. I'm sure lots of workers will welcome the overtime!

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 22:11

I think the workers will be happy to get back to doing what they haven't been allowed to do for so long now, talking to my friends who are itching to get back.
A late finish usually means a 2pm/3pm start and lots of retail staff would actively want to pick up those shifts. Maybe even earn some overtime.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/03/2021 22:15

Since the summer, I've gone to the supermarket late when it's quiet. I can't cope with face coverings so it's less risk in itself, and less chance of bumping into obnoxious self-appointed Covid-police.
Spreading out shopping hours to reduce busyness is very sensible.

That’s quite a big assumption and not necessarily true for everyone. It’s up to individuals and employers to work together to reach the fairest conclusion. Employees can make a statutory application for flexible working hours if they have grounds and can successfully appeal. Employers can take on part time staff to fill evenings if need be. And lots of people do want evening shifts because it meets their needs (studying or caring for very young children during the day etc) It’s not a case of the entire retail workforce all of a sudden being expected to work 8-10 6 days a week.

I won't be going to any shops until the requirement to wear a mask is removed. I wear glasses and if I put a mask on and go into a shop my glasses immediately steam up so I have the choice of either taking them off and not being able to see anything or leaving them on and not being able to see anything!
My OH and I were at a garden centre the other day and after 30 seconds in the plant shop I went back to the car to wait for him to finish his buying as I just don't find it at all enjoyable walking around with my glasses all fogged up. Add into the situation my propensity for hot flushes several times a day and quite frankly, I'll be happy to never go into another shop for the rest of my life!

Gladioli23 · 26/03/2021 22:21

I was confused about this as well, I thought there were only Sunday trading laws and assumed that was what was going... Then realised it wasn't. What are the rest of the week laws?

Once your glasses have warmed up to the shop temperature they'll stop fogging up. I agree it's a pain for the first few minutes... after that it's fine.
