Shops opening until 10pm... any point?

With the announcement that trading hours will be until 10pm when non essential retail opens, I wondered if anyone would make use of this?

I find if I get my mask up high enough and moulded to the bridge of my nose and sit my glasses slightly in front of that then my glasses don’t steam up at all. Miraculously it also seems to work for my colleagues.
Lots of solutions online that do work. It took a bit of fiddling but within a week or two of wearing masks we all seemed to have cracked it.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 22:35

I do feel for the retail staff having to wear masks all day and especially the ones that also wear glasses.

Chloemol · 26/03/2021 22:36

I would because I certainly won’t go at weekends during the day as it will be crowded

hellywelly3 · 26/03/2021 22:39

The problem will be alot of shops won’t want to take on new staff at moment, so staff they already have will be expected/forced to work longer shifts. I’m all for shops being open longer but as someone who works in retail I don’t want to be rotated in till 10pm. I already work every weekend.

amusedbush · 26/03/2021 22:42

@CovidCorvid

They should scrap Sunday trading laws while they’re at it. Will be safer having longer opening hours on a Sunday as people in supermarkets will be more spread out over a longer period. I was amazed they didn’t do this a year ago.
I always forget about Sunday trading laws. I’m in Scotland and shops tend to close an hour early on a Sunday but places like Tesco Extra are open 24/7 here.

I like shopping late to avoid crowds.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 22:43

I can't speak for all retail staff but the people I know have 'availability' meaning they have signed up to work within certain hours of their choosing when they got the job. Anything outside those hours would be by agreement or as overtime. They couldn't be forced.
They have childcare/caring responsibility and studying in the hours they don't work.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 26/03/2021 22:43

I didn't realise this was a thing. As a retail worker I don't want to work till 10pm, sadly I won't have a choice if the store wants to be open till 10, unless I want to resign. I appreciate that lots may want too, but in my store the more experienced staff would be required to do the store close, to support the 'kids' that usually like the evening shift.

RickiTarr · 26/03/2021 22:44

Pent up demand. Everyone’s been window shopping, and measuring up for curtains and tiles and whatnot and now want to get out there and grope the wares.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 26/03/2021 22:48

Yep, and let's have all offices open the same hours so if I have a query I can have it answered.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 26/03/2021 22:48

@Titsywoo

Definitely - people who work can then use the shops in the evening during the week and the weekend won't be a complete nightmare. I'm sure lots of workers will welcome the overtime!
Lots of people want overtime because they are on a zero or low hour contract. Where I work the majority of staff are on a four hour contract
minniemoocher · 26/03/2021 22:51

Shops open to 9pm here, it's just codifying that they can't be open 24 hours eg primark does this sometimes

Snally82 · 26/03/2021 22:53

Yep, would shop that late and many places opened that late previously anyway

Derekhello · 26/03/2021 22:54

After an absolutely awful day at work today (retail) to hear this earlier has just topped my day off. There’s no way the company I work for won’t take advantage of this and the thought of having to work til 10 at night is just bloody awful. We won’t have a choice, we will have to do it.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 26/03/2021 22:56

Yes. I always go to the shops either early or late even pre covid. I can't stand when places are busy.

How does that work if say you have childcare responsibilities?
WorraLiberty · 26/03/2021 23:03

@99victoria

I won't be going to any shops until the requirement to wear a mask is removed. I wear glasses and if I put a mask on and go into a shop my glasses immediately steam up so I have the choice of either taking them off and not being able to see anything or leaving them on and not being able to see anything! My OH and I were at a garden centre the other day and after 30 seconds in the plant shop I went back to the car to wait for him to finish his buying as I just don't find it at all enjoyable walking around with my glasses all fogged up. Add into the situation my propensity for hot flushes several times a day and quite frankly, I'll be happy to never go into another shop for the rest of my life!
Bend the wire at the top of your mask tightly over the bridge of your nose, and wear your glasses a tad further down.

They won't steam up at all.

Joeblack066 · 26/03/2021 23:04

@ssd

Not great for the workers though?
I think they’ll be fine with the shifts. It could well mean that people can work opposite to their partner and not need childcare.
DenisetheMenace · 26/03/2021 23:05

Yes, I’d like to go at quiet times for the foreseeable.

blue25 · 26/03/2021 23:11

No, I’ve got no interest in shopping in my evenings. A shame for the staff.

hellywelly3 · 26/03/2021 23:12

They will just say you have to work for the best interest of the business.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 23:16

But if you can't you can't. You can't leave your small children home alone.

It really isn't a shame for the staff. They have not been at work for months, most will want to get back to it.
hellywelly3 · 26/03/2021 23:34

Exactly it will be very difficult to work somewhere where you can’t work the hours they need. The longer the hours the shops open the more flexible they need staff to be. When shops open longer at Christmas everyone is rotated in different days shifts etc. If you can’t work it it’s a nightmare to get changed. It’s disadvantaging anyone with other commitments.

Thewiseoneincognito · 26/03/2021 23:35

The Trafford Centre is open until 10pm in the week and it’s usually dead after 8 unless it’s a weekend. Perhaps in London it could work but for the rest of the UK it’s not going to have any impact, Mall culture and late night shopping can not be applied to every high street in the country.

It’s all just government bluster and distraction from the inevitable lockdown we’ll end up once the numbers start moving rapidly again.

I would assume the extended opening hours would just be for a while after the non essential shops can open again so they would be busier than before they closed for lockdown. Late night shopping may be a thing for a while but not forever.
