What would you retrain as if money and time were no object?

I am at a crossroads career wise thanks to the pandemic and it’s made me think about retraining and where to go from here.

Just wondered what your dream would be if it didn’t matter about cost or time etc - what would you retrain as?

I'd like to be a teacher, but couldn't take the pay cut in reality. I also wouldn't want to go from senior management in my current role to an NQT.

I did it, leaped from admin & marketing to photography. Love it and have never looked back.

Swoonforpeterbishop · 25/03/2021 23:17

This is so interesting.
Because I might have to retrain I’m drinking myself drifting off into all manner of daydreams and feeling like the world is my oyster when in reality I need to look at what will earn the money I need to bring in and not drive me insane.

If I could do anything though (successfully obviously) I would love to write books or do something else creative like be an illustrator or sell my own prints/interior accessories.

@hilariousnamehere amazing! Did it feel like you were taking a big risk?

I would love to retrain as an architect.

Or a journalist.

Kind of - it felt like a massive risk and also something I couldn't not do if that makes sense. I'd been running side businesses alongside my job for 8 years and had finally found the confidence to do the thing I really wanted to properly. I made the leap shortly after losing my Dad, when some changes at work didn't suit me and it suddenly felt like the right time - nothing like a life-changing bereavement to make you shake things up, hey?

First few months were exhilarating and terrifying because I had very few clients, not enough practical experience in sticky lighting situations (I shoot businesses and while small ones and entrepreneurs are usually great, big offices invariably have awful fluorescent lighting 😂) and was massively undercharging. Nearly 3 years later I'm fully booked with a waiting list and very happy - so would definitely recommend Grin

Based on what you said a few posts back, could you start something on the side? I've definitely found it easier to make this a success because of previous experience and more than a few attempts at side hustles Smile and having something that I was working towards made it easier to tolerate the shit jobs...

I want to be a Herald. Just for the job title: Rouge Dragon Pursuivant.

To combine my interests in science and history, maybe be a conservator in a museum or if it were a real job be an alchemist.

MrsPworkingmummy · 26/03/2021 07:00

A farmer, landowner with my own camo/caravan site or a Professor of History at a University. My actual job is Head of English in a primary and secondary school.

felulageller · 26/03/2021 07:48

Writer/Journalist/Photographer

My job has been mentioned above and really isn't something to aspire to!

TravellingSpoon · 26/03/2021 08:06

Sociology Lecturer. I could retrain but I dont think my MH could take the uncertainty and stress of HE.
