What do your children wash their face with?

And do they use moisturiser/SPF? I've been taking mire care of my skin recently and its paying off. It started me thinking about my 2 DC, ages 4 and 5. They have a wash in the morning, bath at night (most nights) . We don't have a shower. So in the morning they use a face cloth and water. At night, the same but probably more soapy as they are in the bath. I remember as a child using imperial leather soap Shock

I've also just seen on a skincare FB group, discussion about children wearing facial SPF daily all year round. One of my DC reacts badly to list sunscreen so rarely wears it on his face even in summer, just has a very good coverage sun hat, hes never burnt.

Is it really necessary? Year round?

Water, 9 year old DD. Showers every morning. Soaps armpits, shower gel for body.

Theunamedcat · 24/03/2021 22:28

Flannel and soap face pits bits suncream is a fine line dd wears it as part of her skincare routine (when she remembers it) but ds rarely remembers it even though his skin is delicate

Wash face with just water.
Sun cream only when necessary.

Children don't need to specifically wash their faces unless there is visible dirt. Mine never have. So nothing at all.

WaterBottle123 · 24/03/2021 22:31

Of course SPF isn't necessary year round. They need vitamin D.

BackforGood · 24/03/2021 22:34

Water.
Same as me.

LBOCS2 · 24/03/2021 22:34

In the bath, they wash their faces with the same body wash they use everywhere else. The rest of the time I chase them around clutching a baby wipe if I notice they look like they've been up an actual chimney.

SPF in the summer, spray P20 (factor 50). My DDs are redheads so we balance the need for vitamin D with the need for suntan lotion. It's a very fine balancing act!

OrangeBrickRoad · 24/03/2021 22:35

I’m wary of wearing sunscreen every day as we don’t get a great deal of sun here anyway so there’s already a risk of vitamin D deficiency. Sunscreen if there’s a risk of burning otherwise none here. Wash with water and a flannel

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/03/2021 22:36

Ketchup!

bumpdownthestairs · 24/03/2021 22:36

2 year old toddler, usually a nice clean top I have just put on or if he's feeling particularly adventurous there's usually something in the garden to rub his face in 😂

TolpuddleFarter · 24/03/2021 22:41

Mine don't wash their faces! (I don't wash mine either unless I've been wearing makeup.)

AnExcellentWalker · 24/03/2021 22:41

DD (nearly 9) washes her face with a wet flannel, & occasionally soap if I absolutely insist, when she gets dinner/toothpaste/general muck on it.

We only use sunscreen if it's blazing hot. We're a hat family. I always wear a hat. And sunglasses if at all possible. I'm 40, fairly lax with sunscreen. No wrinkles yet. I've never got sunburnt on my face & I've never sunbathed.

BaggoMcoys · 24/03/2021 22:48

Dd is nearly 7 and face washing is usually a flannel with water, if it looks dirty. SPF only in the summer when it's hot. I wear an SPF on my face all year round, but would find it odd if a child did.

BaggoMcoys · 24/03/2021 22:48

Unless there was a medical reason of course.

Hoppythehippo · 24/03/2021 23:08

Flannel or sponge with plain water if it looks dirty (or if they’re in it then whatever is in the bath, I guess occasionally it’s water plus a tiny bit of bubble bath). One has moisturiser in places prone to eczema (back of knees mostly), the other has nothing.

I don’t use sunscreen on them unless the uv index is fairly high and they’d otherwise burn. For a rainy November day at school I certainly don’t bother! I suspect the kind of people who would post on a FB group about skincare are a lot more invested than I am though in that kind of thing.

megletthesecond · 24/03/2021 23:12

At that age it was water and a flannel morning and evening.
Sunblock and hats on sunny summer days.

Now they're teens they have face wash. If it's a scorcher of a day I'll get them to put some sunblock on.

VenusTiger · 24/03/2021 23:13

Flannel and water for my son every morning - helps him 'wake up' and gets any 'sleep' out of his eyes - mine too! He's 7.
Never done the bath every day thing with him - it's too much! They don't sweat like adults and you're stripping all the natural oils from their skin and hair - it dries them out - they only need a bath a couple of times a week or shower a few times a week.

BritInAus · 24/03/2021 23:32

Water and a flannel in the bath /shower at night. Maybe a bit of the shower gel if it was really visibly grubby.
Sunscreen every morning - but we're in Australia so definitely a need.

HyggeTygge · 24/03/2021 23:39

Posh Clarins gel cleanser for my 6yo Grin
...on the rare occasion I need to actually remove dirt like felt tip pen, biro, orangey tomato-based food, dried on snot... i use a bit of my own stuff. Otherwise just warm water with a flannel. But I was actually wondering if you can get nice soap/ face cleaner for kids.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 25/03/2021 06:44

DD (9 next week) uses face wash every night because she gets a few spots on her forehead. Only uses sun cream in summer, Sun protection is great for anti ageing but you don't need to worry about that until mid twenties, kids using Sun protection when it is not and sunny is enough

ImFree2doasiwant · 25/03/2021 07:41

@VenusTiger we have ponies, so they come with me to them every day after school and usually get filthy with mud and soaking wet. Hence the almost daily baths. I only bath them if they need it but so often they do actually need it.

@HyggeTygge yes that's what I wondered. I've git a mild cream cleanser that I might use. Dc1 gets a bit dry so I think that'd help.

VenusTiger · 25/03/2021 12:23

@ImFree2doasiwant that's a difficult one then - if they're muddy, they certainly need a clean but you realise it's probably what's causing you to believe they need moisturiser? Too much washing is drying them out.
Could they just use a flannel instead?
If you become reliant on products, it won't help in the long run imo.

ParadiseLaundry · 25/03/2021 12:27

I just use water on my kids faces (5 and 1) unless they've has sunscreen on then I wash it off with hydromol or the gentle oat cleanser from Inkey List.

Themadcatparade · 25/03/2021 12:49

My DD9 was just washing with water and a face sponge up until recently where she is starting to get greasy skin and blackheads (at 9!!)

She’s getting quite developed for her age though she seems to be hitting puberty earlier than I thought she would. We have just been recently trying the simple face lotion for her and it seems to have really brightened and cleared her skin up

Themadcatparade · 25/03/2021 12:51

Don’t think it has an spf in it though
