What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Napkin rings
Cake forks
A communal cigarette lighter for the table
Wine with dinner
Hotels that had a dinner gong

starsparkle08 · 25/03/2021 19:55

A lot of the things people are listing are posh

Kitchen roll. It was seen as the greatest of extravagances by my frugal parents. I buy it now and I love it. Every time I use it I feel joyful at the convenience it offers.
I buy it but feel guilty pleasure at using it.

I suspect my life may be somewhat lacking in excitement these days.

@Harleyband

Ribena- especially hot Ribena at night. Indoor shoes- we wore socks or slippers

Private schools- I thought only the very posh went but now I send my DCs to one and know that while there are some very rich, very posh families most are like us scraping together the money for the fees and living very ordinary lives

You'd be better off saving the money and giving your kids a big house deposit. 1 grade in the exams isn't going to make that much difference, but £250k might

@fucksat50

Liebraumilch wine
Wine full stop! Grin It was considered incredibly grand to have wine when I was a child (not me having it, obv, the adults Grin ) ... very much a 'Christmas Day only' type of deal. Guess it must have been really expensive then. All that fuss over crap like Liebfraumilch and Riesling tho. Grin

"Christ yes
Houses called things like Elmwood"

I was shocked when I realised townies thought this. In the countryside it's totally normal for a house to have a name and often the only way to identify it. Where I come from, people were often called by their house name as well.

I thought that.

My grandparents always had a photographer come after Xmas lunch to take a family portrait in the drawing room! That's still posh in my book.

I expect she spins in her grave when she looks at my life Grin

Laggartha · 25/03/2021 19:59

Dining rooms.

Clean and tidy car interiors.

Wearing shoes indoors or putting on makeup for the daytime.

LookAChicken · 25/03/2021 19:59

Beaujolais Nouveau seemed to be quite a thing at one point.

I now assume "marketing campaign" rather than being posh / in fashion/ desirable.

@DoggyDoolittle

Going to the races / Ladies Day
All our local working men’s clubs did trips to the races, ladies days etc..my parents and friends would go mad getting dressed up but then would always come back so wasted, so I definitely didn’t think they were posh just an excuse for another piss up 😂

Sharing a takeaway in the middle of the table because that’s what we did at my Auntie’s house.

Dishwashers again due to said Auntie.

Garages you could access through the house.

Hamsters.

Ping pong.

Dunlop wellies.

Quavers.

I was a sheltered child 😂

AdoraBell · 25/03/2021 20:15

Dark chocolate, and crisps from M&S.

Imissmoominmama · 25/03/2021 20:20

People who had Spanish dancer dolls, or straw donkeys. It all seemed so exotic to the young me.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2021 20:21

@Claudia84

I’d still think you were posh with a salt spoon! I had to look that up
I don't know what a salt spoon and dish are!
menotastic · 25/03/2021 20:24

French Fancies. My scary granny served these little pink and yellow cakes at tea time on a cake stand, with lots of rules about what children were or weren't allowed to do or say. My sister and I thought they were the height of poshness. 30 years later I realise they were Mr Kipling with the packet thrown away.

Kitchen roll, however, is the work of the devil. Why do we need to cut down trees to provide something that does the same job as a cloth? Have never understood that.

menotastic · 25/03/2021 20:27

The' house with a name' thing had a dreadful snobbery attached to it where I went to school. People who lived in 'a house with a number' were very looked down on, unless they lived in Kensington. Glad I don't have to mix with people who hold with that kind of nonsense any more. And I wish my house had a number so it would be easier for delivery people to find.

Range Rovers. They were once, now mostly driven by chavvy footballers wives. But let’s be honest, if someone gave me one I wouldn’t say no!

ZaZathecat · 25/03/2021 20:33

Berni Inns

oohyoudevilyou · 25/03/2021 20:33

Shop bought cakes. When I was a child cake was always a home made sultana loaf cake or butterfly cakes.I longed to have "posh" cakes like the Mr Kipling French Fancies served at my friend's house. Still feel upset when I see that they're only a quid a box!

longwayoff · 25/03/2021 20:34

I feel a bit kitchen roll-ish about sellotape. It was treated with thrifty reverence in my childhood and I still feel compelled to use but an inch at a time instead of extravagantly using inches of it in one go. We did have cake forks though although I dont think they were ever used. Sent to Oxfam years ago.

Silkies · 25/03/2021 20:39

Yes Berni Inns was very posh for us too especially if you had a floater coffee.

hedgehogger1 · 25/03/2021 20:40

Orange juice. Only allowed a small
Glass one a week as it is was so expensive

Feedingthebirds1 · 25/03/2021 20:40

My mom used to serve salad with sliced boiled eggs and always offered salad cream when my best friend came for tea ,in the late 70's.

That reminds me. When I was little we always had salad cream, so I thought mayo was ever so posh.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 25/03/2021 20:46

What’s a salt spoon?
