Weird (and boring) question but -

Where do you put your knife after you've buttered your bread?

On the countertop leaves a grease mark, I don't want it on my plate (it'll fall off as I carry it to the table) and because of the shape of our butter dish I can't leave it in/on top of there. Don't want to put it in the dishwasher yet in case I have a second piece of bread.

I've taken to putting it on a piece of kitchen towel but it seems wasteful to do it everyday.

So... where do you put yours?

On the bread board?

FightingTheFoo · 23/03/2021 23:18

Our bread board is wooden so don't want a grease mark on there either! (Also we rarely use it since we mostly buy pre-sliced bread).

You sound like you'd be fun on a night out.

On the contrary it sounds like OP would make an excellent butty at the end and leave the kitchen spotlessly clean.

A: sink

DramaAlpaca · 23/03/2021 23:25

I always use a bread board, even for buttering pre-sliced bread. If I'm going to use the butter knife again I put it on the bread board with the handle on the board and the blade suspended over the edge IYSWIM. I can't be doing with greasy marks on my bread board.

God, I sound like a right laugh Blush

Spottysausagedogs · 23/03/2021 23:27

I'd put the handle on the breadboard with the blade hanging over the side in mid air. If it bothered me that much. Or leave the lid off the butter dish and sort of stab it into the butter, till I was sure I was done with the butter and knife. I am a heathen though. I just generally slap it down on the worksurface then wipe up later.

I leave it hanging over the sink like the breadboard people so handle on top and blade hanging over.

activitythree · 23/03/2021 23:32

I put mine in the dishwasher. I just use another knife I decide to have more bread.

Halo1234 · 23/03/2021 23:37

Hmmm never gave it much thought tbh but now that u ask I would probably leave it on the worktop and wipe the grease mark later. I bet your house is spotless. I would love to be a nice tidy organised person. If I am totally honest I would probably forget about the knife and use a fresh one if I wanted more bread...leave it on the worktop too and then put them both in the dishwasher later. Luckily I dont have bread and butter that often. But think my attitude to this shed light on why I seem to be tidying the kitchen several times a day.

Frownette · 23/03/2021 23:40

I'm scruffy as hell but I'd just wash it up afterwards. Nothing worse than rancid butter (well, maybe a few things).

Stoppissingonmyheather · 23/03/2021 23:57

Oh what a dilemma

Doona · 24/03/2021 00:00

I don't actually know! But come to think of it my DH does bring it up. He says "can you leave the knife blah blah after you blah blah?" and I say "what?"

It must be so lovely being married to me!

WonkyCactus · 24/03/2021 00:01

I always butter bread on the bread board so I leave the knife on that.

Indeed, elaborate!

I'd like to hear more about your dilemmas :)

AdoptedBumpkin · 24/03/2021 00:11

Bread board - I'd be stuck without it.

Mygardenisnotperfect · 24/03/2021 00:13

😂 glad it’s not just me who spends energy thinking about this! (I personally cleverly don’t butter my bread until I am AT the table thus avoiding the carrying the plate to the table and dropping the knife scenario) and then just leave it on my plate. But am thinking of getting a spoon rest for the stirring spoon I use while cooking! Believe it or not I am the world’s biggest slob but I annoy myself with the amount of mess I create so am consciously trying to change things little by little!

DustySpringboard · 24/03/2021 00:15

Either on the wooden breadboard hanging off the edge or the spoon rest or the dishwasher then get a clean knife if needed.

Tbh once I've worked through all these options & made a decision my toast is cold so need to start over.....

Frownette · 24/03/2021 00:18

On a different note, I have a lovely butter dish

I don't boast about many things, but mine is admirable. If there were a Crufts competition for butter dishes I'm sure it would win.

AntiHop · 24/03/2021 00:20

On the wooden breadboard. Never had a problem with greasy marks.

I need a butter dish. Tell me more please!

At last! I can get this weird thing out in the open. It's far too boring to warrant me starting a thread about it, but I have considered it in the past. However I shall piggyback on your thread OP, hope you don't mind.

My OH has a dedicated knife for his spread that he keeps in the fridge on top of the tub of Lurpak! It is so he always has the knife handy for his buttering requirements (I assume the extra step to the cutlery drawer being too much when the need for a sarnie is strong!) .

It isn't washed after each use, just put on top of the tub and the fridge door closed.

I may have called him a psychopath upon discovering his dirty fridge butter knife.

Knives aren't difficult to wash, by hand or in the dishwasher. He has plenty of knives that are suitable for the spreading of butter.

He is odd.

Luckily he has many lovely attributes and generally speaking isn't weird.
