To ask if you pay £800-£1100 in rent/mortgage, what is your income?

And do you have any significant costs, i.e childcare? Where in the UK do you live (approx!)?

sigh I don't know about you but I've noticed rent increasing each year and it seems relentless! I am outside of London, in a large city and looking to rent a new premises with DP, hoping to find somewhere cheaper so we can continue putting money in a pot for a house deposit. Depressing that the rent seems more expensive than a mortgage of a similar size property!

We have no DC yet and earn £52k between us - no car costs or significant outgoings and wondering whether £925 a month rent would be stretching it, this does not include any bills! 1 bed apartment on a main road, includes parking and close to work! Hoping to rent for another 2 years before purchasing a property and before DC.

Whilst researching properties it made me wonder about other peoples situation income/rent in this range and wondered how other people manage. Would you consider yourself comfortable or is it a struggle?

A nosey post i guess but also useful for me to compare our own situation- if you don't feel comfortable answering, please dont, hopefully I dont come across as a CF.

I’m in a large town in (the largest, actually) in the SE, previously rented a 1 bed flat for £800 and now own a 2 bed house and the mortgage is a smidge over £1000. Our combined income is similar to yours but will go up when DP finishes his training. We don’t have any DC or significant costs at the moment - previously had commuting costs of around £450 a month - and it doesn’t feel like a struggle with our lifestyle, we still manage to save and go on holiday etc.

mooloop · 22/03/2021 19:00

Combined income is about £80k, mortgage is £930 PCM

ImInStealthMode · 22/03/2021 19:03

When I bought my flat I was single and earned £30k. Mortgage and service charge about £800, plus all bills on top, was easily manageable.

£925 on a combined income of over £50k should be easy, unless you have any other major expenses or debts?

£1100 to rent and it was around 45k between us but then COVID.

Now we eat beans.....

Yellowbowlbanana · 22/03/2021 19:04

Mortgage is £1105
Joint income of around £120K

Yellowfish2020 · 22/03/2021 19:05

This is fascinating. £800 mortgage and combined earning £60k. We deliberately downsized to do this though so we can save and afford other childcare costs

Screwcorona · 22/03/2021 19:06

Rent 950 and monthly net income 2100. Cornwall

Like for like property on a mortgage would be around 650 frustratingly

SoWhyNot · 22/03/2021 19:06

We pay £900 on mortgage, £2184 for nursery, £238 on school wraparound care, probably £175 on holiday clubs (the last two are spread over 12 months). Earn £120k plus bonuses that can be really good.

OpusAnglicanum · 22/03/2021 19:06

Combined income £78k. (Was more when we took out mortgage but I’ve gone part time since DC.) Mortgage £900 per month, childcare £650. East Midlands.

Onedropbeat · 22/03/2021 19:08

£900 mortgage a month
Joint income varies between £68-73k depending on bonuses
No childcare fees

Tullyjune · 22/03/2021 19:10

Joint income of £43000 and rent (cheapest we can find for a small 3 bed) is £1000pcm.

Seriously envious of all those with £90k incomes paying the same rent!

Realitea · 22/03/2021 19:18

Our income is £24k and rent is 1000 a month Sad

stormelf · 22/03/2021 19:20

Paid off mortgage now but before we were paying £509 a month with family income of £27k

FizzyPink · 22/03/2021 19:22

Our rent is £950 because we rent from a family member, otherwise it would be around £1,300. That’s for a 1 bedroom flat in London zone 3.

Our combined income is probably around £120k and we have no childcare costs/other expensive outgoings. However, I save £1,200 a month into our house buying fund and DP on top of that but he’s self employed so the amount varies.

Ellieboolou33 · 22/03/2021 19:25

Joint income between 70-90k
Mortgage 1150
Childcare 200-300 per month

Katiepants27 · 22/03/2021 19:30

£900 mortgage, 70k combined earnings. No other major outgoings. We're in South Yorkshire

Orangesox · 22/03/2021 19:30

2020/21 combined income: £110k
Mortgage payment: £807
Other costs: £750ish on cars

2 adults, no children. Yorkshire.

KingdomScrolls · 22/03/2021 19:31

My first mortgage was £475 a month and I was earning around £25k , current mortgage is £925 and joint income is £80-90k depending on overtime and shift allowances for both of us, but was around £65k until last year when DH finished a professional qualification and got a promotion. Nursery costs around £600-£675 a month and that's for one day a week, we're lucky to have my mum help with DS

LolaNova · 22/03/2021 19:33

Income would be £48K (me part time, DH full time - plus bonuses for DH) but DH has been on furlough for most of the last year and I started maternity leave in November.

Nursery fees of about £350 per month when I’m working (we have a lot of grandparent help). PIL are currently paying our nursery fees of approx £250 per month for two mornings per week.

Haven’t decided what to do when I am due back at work. It may be that I go back full time and DH combines some childcare with part time study and starting a business 😬

Pbbananabagel · 22/03/2021 19:35

50k joint income
950pm mortgage
871pm childcare (that’s just for one child three days a week)
Then bills etc on top.

It’s only depressing when I look at it Sad

bellsbuss · 22/03/2021 19:36

Our mortgage is around £1100 and OH earns between £115,00-125,000 a year.

MaverickDanger · 22/03/2021 19:36

Combined salary of 117k. Our rent was about 1650 on a 2 bed flat, now 1750 on a 4 bed detached house.

Currently on mat leave (saved enough for it for my salary to basically be the same). Childcare will obviously become a high expenditure in 9 months.

We did most of our saving when we worked abroad & took lucrative contracts in low tax/tax free countries. We’ve invested a fair amount too, although we’ve always had quite low outgoings so are able to save a fair amount.

EnglishRain · 22/03/2021 19:37

Mortgage £1200, joint income £80K. On mat leave but will have nursery fees soon.

MaverickDanger · 22/03/2021 19:37

1750 is for our mortgage! We had to put a 25% deposit down as DH is from overseas.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 22/03/2021 19:42

We are paying about this (varies, as we overpay by different amounts, but then our joint income also varies month by month) and our joint income is about £100k. No children in childcare, but one at University who we are supporting a lot.
