To ask if you pay £800-£1100 in rent/mortgage, what is your income?

And do you have any significant costs, i.e childcare? Where in the UK do you live (approx!)?

sigh I don't know about you but I've noticed rent increasing each year and it seems relentless! I am outside of London, in a large city and looking to rent a new premises with DP, hoping to find somewhere cheaper so we can continue putting money in a pot for a house deposit. Depressing that the rent seems more expensive than a mortgage of a similar size property!

We have no DC yet and earn £52k between us - no car costs or significant outgoings and wondering whether £925 a month rent would be stretching it, this does not include any bills! 1 bed apartment on a main road, includes parking and close to work! Hoping to rent for another 2 years before purchasing a property and before DC.

Whilst researching properties it made me wonder about other peoples situation income/rent in this range and wondered how other people manage. Would you consider yourself comfortable or is it a struggle?

A nosey post i guess but also useful for me to compare our own situation- if you don't feel comfortable answering, please dont, hopefully I dont come across as a CF.

Forgot to add we are in the East Midlands. No childcare costs yet (DD is 7 months old)

LST · 22/03/2021 18:12

We are on around 51k joint income before tax and pay 553 on a mortgage. In the Midlands. We have 2 primary dc with no childcare

SingleHandSue · 22/03/2021 18:12

Rent is £800, joint income is £45,000 but that’s only been in the last 2 years, before that it was £34,000 and a bit of a struggle.

We’re lucky to have no big outgoings like childcare.

Mirrorxx · 22/03/2021 18:13

Mortgage 950. Combined income 94k

AuntieMarys · 22/03/2021 18:16

Dd pays £1250 in rent ( one bed flat) and earns £32k.
London of course

Kpo58 · 22/03/2021 18:17

Could you not move somewhere cheaper for 2 years so that you can save up more.

Childcare can be VERY expensive. I was paying about £700 each month for 2 days per week for my 2 DC at nursery.

mizu · 22/03/2021 18:18

Mortgage £886 a month. Joint income of around £65,000. Feel like we have plenty of money as no childcare costs anymore.

We only bought 3 years ago and our mortgage is more than any rent we've ever paid perhaps as we only had a relatively small deposit.

Usagi12 · 22/03/2021 18:19

£850 per month mortgage and combined income of £80k.

kirinm · 22/03/2021 18:20

Mortgage is £1150. Childcare costs £1400. Combined income of about £105k

InsanityOf2020 · 22/03/2021 18:25

Rent £850 pcm, salary £30k pa, just me and 2 kids.... i wouldnt say we can afford a load of luxuries but we arent on the breadline either. That said if the rent does go up i will have to look to move again. I am on the commuter belt for a large midlands city and its getting silly, could really do with a third bedroom but looking at £1100 rent as a minimum which is unaffordable to me

GrumpySausage · 22/03/2021 18:26

We pay £880 a month mortgage. Nursery costs £360 a month.
Combined income of 51k a year.
Live in Nottinghamshire.

GrumpySausage · 22/03/2021 18:27

Sorry, 4 bed detached house.

Spillanelle · 22/03/2021 18:27

Combined income £105k, so take home is around £5500 per month. Mortgage is £800pm, childcare £700, other bills and food come to around £1500 so around £2500 left for savings and spending.

Your income is around half so I’m guessing you could do it but depending on other costs/childcare, might not have a huge amount left to spend or save.

I think rather than comparing to other people you probably need to list out all your income and outgoings to see what’s manageable.

cansu · 22/03/2021 18:29

Mortvage 1200 and combined income od about 75k. We have 8 years left. Took mortgage late in life and is on a short term hence being quite expensive.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 22/03/2021 18:29

£870 mortgage, £85k income. Approx £700 a month childcare costs.

usernotfound0000 · 22/03/2021 18:37

£900 on mortgage plus £450 nursery a month and then usual household bills. Joint income is £60k

MangoChutnee · 22/03/2021 18:46

Mine is 750 but I overpay by 50, so 800.

No childcare.

Income is 39k gross.

I also rent out my parking for 100 a month.

Aimee1987 · 22/03/2021 18:54

60 k joint income.
850 on rent 800 on nursery

zaffa · 22/03/2021 18:57

£43k joint income - £950 rent £800 nursery fees. When we bought the house in 2019 we had no baby so no nursery fees and £70k joint income though. Life is incredibly tight but we are squeezing by for now.

FrancesFlute · 22/03/2021 18:57

65k income and mortgage is about £900. We're in Yorkshire. Nursery fees currently 'only' about £400/month.

ItsSnowJokes · 22/03/2021 18:58

40k joint income, £920 mortgage and £350 a month childcare.

badgerread · 22/03/2021 18:59

My mortgage is £906 and I earn £18k a year plus £6,292 in Working & Child Tax credits
