Please tell me it isn't that bad? 😭

It’s not that bad!

I went for a dental check once and was told I needed two wisdom teeth out. Booked back in a few days later (private).

Numbed up, sat back, in he went. He kept up a one-sided conversation about the excellence of South African wines all the while. Grin

It took about 30 minutes to get two out. No pain, although there was uncomfortable bruising afterwards from where I’d had my mouth open.

I went back to work afterwards! (Office job.) Probably should have just gone home on balance, but just to give you an idea.

It’s honestly fine. Brew

Lubiluxe · 22/03/2021 11:24

Ahh thank you so much for that! It is more the recovery I'm worried about, online suggests up to 2 weeks of pain!

I've got lots to do tomorrow so was hoping some ibuprofen and paracetamol would be enough 🤞

Glad it wasn't too bad for you!

I had my 2 bottom ones removed last year under GA the pain afterwards was worse than after my EMCS but the recovery was shorter. Just try and get discharged with some decent painkillers.

Lubiluxe · 22/03/2021 11:32

Thanks, good to have a balance of how it went. I'll prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

DH ended up with dry socket, it was awful and you need to be aware of it.

I had two out and it wasn't fun but it was fine. I didn't have GA or sedation.

A lot depends on the actual tooth, are they impacted / growing sideways etc.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesn · 22/03/2021 11:35

I had two out under general. The pain was terrible, I was sore for about 2 weeks and couldn't eat much.

BrilliantBetty · 22/03/2021 11:41

I've had a wisdom out while pregnant, under local anaesthetic. It was fine. Didn't hurt. It didn't feel like a big deal, he whipped it out in seconds.

I was careful to do everything they said afterwards so as not to get an infection. Still got a slight infection requiring anti biotics but i got that sorted by seeing a dentist v promptly as soon as I felt a niggle. All solved within 10days and non of it was half as painful as the actual pain from the wisdom before it came out.

Lubiluxe · 22/03/2021 11:50

Thanks all, not sure what dry socket is?! I will look it up.
It is growing sideways but is fully grown through if that makes sense. So it should hopefully come out easily.

Upper ones far easier that lower ones to remove. Have paracetamol ready but surprisingly was less bother than having a filling in my case.

Billandben444 · 22/03/2021 12:05

I'm sorry, I had 2 out under a GA and the pain after was awful. My face swelled up like a hamster's and I lived on pain killers for days - stock up on small bags of frozen peas in case! I wonder whether if you're out they're a bit rougher than with a local?

Orangeblossom1975 · 22/03/2021 16:34

Can I ask having just had one filled, why / when they remove them? Thanks

VaVaGloom · 22/03/2021 17:27

@Orangeblossom1975 if they have erupted fine and you use them in your bite then they would retain them. If they are coming through facing the cheek like OP or are causing crowding of other teeth they may decide to remove them.

DatingDickheads · 22/03/2021 17:35

I’m 3 weeks post wisdom tooth removal. The procedure wasn’t sore and I had no pain after day 2.

My advice? Follow all the general rules. Rest, No straws, salt water rinsing after every meal - gentle rinsing only, no spitting, soft foods only, gentle cleaning only near the extraction site.

It will be fine and much better getting it out than risking infections.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 22/03/2021 17:38

This will be me soon..only got one that's made a appearance but its sideways and stopped growing but effecting the one next to it so following with intrest

Twizbe · 22/03/2021 17:42

I've had two out.

One was very straight forward. I did swell so looked like a hamster for a bit. It was sore for a few days but manageable with paracetamol.

The other one wasn't straight forward. It was touching a nerve so I had to be sedated for the procedure. It was a lot more painful after, more swelling and felt pretty horrible. I had to have someone with me as the sedation took a while to leave my body.

I've also had 2 pre molars out. They were way worse than the wisdom teeth.

LegendDairy · 22/03/2021 18:06

I had one out just over 2 weeks ago. Didn't feel a thing in terms of pain but she was sure putting her weight behind trying to dig and pull it out which made my jaw ache a bit. I found when she was doing the stitches I was a be a bit more squeemish so I kept my eyes closed for that bit. Pain killers and soft foods for a day or two and its been healing fine. I think its mostly completely healed now and the stitches have dissolved.

GreenBalaclava · 22/03/2021 18:11

I had one lower one out under sedation. Recovery was straightforward without much pain at all. Good luck OP!

JanewaysBun · 22/03/2021 20:13

I had 4 out under GA. I'm completely fine now but ...
I got dry socket (where the skin breaks and the bone gets exposed) and it was excruciating. I think I had it in 2 of my holes, not even cocodemol would take the pain away but you can have it "packed" which helps. I had it packed 2 or 3 times.

I Also got lock jaw so could only open my mouth 2 fingers wide for about a month.

It took 6 weeks to be normal but I am.glad I had it done. I had 2 x toddlers at the time and I was the I was so grumpy!

LividLiving · 22/03/2021 20:15

Mine came out four hours ago!

I went in expecting a filling so actually I’m glad, because I didn’t know to worry too much.

Genuinely didn’t hurt, a bit like my Caesarean section as in lots of weird tugging but no pain. Weird to not feel mouth from local.

Now it’s wearing off and I’m hungry, having had to miss dinner. Hope it doesn’t start feeling too sore because the anaesthetic was quite nice.

Also, they gave me my tooth as a souvenir Grin

Same, pretty easy.
Petite, female dentist (I love her, she's lovely) got the strength of a lion, in she went, wriggled it about and out it came, bit of blood, felt a bit woozy after as I'd hyped it up in my mind.
Overall not pleasant but not horrendous.
People like to tell a horror story so you don't hear about the uneventful extractions, they're boring stories!
You'll be fine, get in the chair, breath and do what the dentist tells you, it'll be over before you know it 😊

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 22/03/2021 20:22

I had to have a bottom wisdom tooth out, it broke during the extraction process and took forever but it still wasn’t that bad. I was gumming chips by day 3.

Dry socket is where you dislodge the clot forming in the empty hole and it is painful but mostly avoidable. Treat your extraction like a fragile antique. No straws no sucking no smoking. Nothing that’s going to create a pull in your mouth. When you rinse hold the salt water in your mouth and gently move your head then lean over the sink and let it dribble out.

Thebookswereherfriends · 22/03/2021 20:27

I had all my wisdom teeth removed at once when I was 18 - I remember being in a considerable amount of pain for about 3 days, couldn’t do much more than sit and watch tv waiting for the next dose of ibuprofen, and then just dull aching for another week.

Tejutas · 22/03/2021 20:41

Depends really - I had two out under GA, 2 out in the chair. They are completely different experiences and recovery times.

HermioneWeasley · 22/03/2021 20:46

Top ones are much easier to remove. Paracetamol will deal with the pain, but I was getting some aching for a few weeks after - nothing terrible. Gargle with salt water for a few days after for infection control.
