I can't think of anywhere I actually want to live!

In a year and a bit's time we're going to be looking to move house and for the first time in almost 20 years, we get to decide where we want to live!
The problem is, I have no idea where I want to settle down...
We'll have two teenage children, I'd like to live in Yorkshire, no more than an hours drive from the North East coast, not too far away from a city but other than that... no idea!
Help me out, oh wise ones... where in Yorkshire would you move to?

I would second somewhere near bakewell, I live on South West Sheffield and went to school there, so have a look to the west of the city. If you do like it around there, which I'm sure you will as its a 15 minute drive in to the peaks, then have a look along the 'Hope Valley train line' I went to a sixth form in Sheffield where lots of people lived along it, so your teens would be able to experience a city somewhat with ypu living in the countryside!

Student133 · 20/03/2021 20:39

Have a look on here, Hathersage is lovely!

I can't think of anywhere I actually want to live!
AhCheeses · 20/03/2021 20:53

Oh wow, @RainingBatsAndFrogs ... those houses 😍 I'll go halves with you on the second one... 😁
I've never really considered Newcastle... would have to find out the good and not so good areas...

@Student133 that's a handy little map! Will have a look, although it might be a bit far from the north east coast for me, the rail connection to a city is definitely a plus.

@WarmSausageTea

I keep saying to DH we'll just have to get Kirsty and Phill onto it!

Joking aside, do give that some thought. DP and I went on Escape to the Country, and although it didn’t find us the right place, it was enjoyable and very helpful.

Years ago now we were contacted by someone from the LLL team and asked if we'd be interested in taking part in the show! We weren't in a position to buy back then so turned it down... I joke to DH saying 'do you think they'd have us on now after we turned them down!?' 😁 I'd definitely do it, but I think I'd have to narrow the search down a bit more that 'the north' first 😁 I know what I want from my house, just not where I want it!

Richmond ( North Yorks )

notwatchingrugby · 20/03/2021 21:18

We did this thought experiment for a good few years. What about here, there looks nice

Then one day, what about ... omg why did we never think of that , it's perfect

So now we Have just taken them plunge,

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/03/2021 21:22

Do your teens want to move? I'd have hated to leave my friends at that age.

AhCheeses · 20/03/2021 21:29

@notwatchingrugby Some might say I have a tendency to over think things... 😁
How exciting though!? Just jumping in and taking the plunge! Can you do the same for me...? Just pick me somewhere! 😁

@whatswithtodaytoday we don't have a choice. The house comes with the job. When the job ends, so does the accommodation 🤷🏼
Can't afford to buy where we are currently, so we have to move.

It took years! We had spreadsheets and everything

Dowser · 20/03/2021 21:57

Satellite village outside of york..

Oh, we do
In caravan season
Normally March to end of November
Then north east coast for winter
York and our beaches kept us sane last year

Dowser · 20/03/2021 21:59

I did my college years in Sheffield, totley , right on the edge of the Peak District and Derbyshire.
Long way from the sea though

Saltyslug · 20/03/2021 23:23

Beverly op look at Beverly. Vibrant and close to hull and the seaside/motorways .

Saltyslug · 20/03/2021 23:31

York is very difficult to drive around, very clogged up

AhCheeses · 21/03/2021 11:07

@Saltyslug I'd never even heard of Beverly before reading it here! 😳
Definitely going to have a look.
Also, although I can drive, I don't enjoy it and really hate narrow roads with cars parked down both sides or winding roads... good point about York!

A friend of mine recently moved to Beverley and while it is lovely it’s quite rural with plenty of country lanes

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 21/03/2021 12:04

Im not sure why people keep suggesting bakewell? I know it's lovely but you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere in England further from the coast 😅

I would suggest one of the villages around York, or if you're looking further north maybe somewhere like alnwick?

Chipsahoy · 21/03/2021 12:15

Thirst. Richmond. Northallerton. Ripon. Bedale. West of Darlington. Yarm.

Chipsahoy · 21/03/2021 12:16

Thirsk *

allmycats · 21/03/2021 13:42

Look at Malton, loads of lovely countryside around and not too far from York or the East Coast.

ILoveExcel · 21/03/2021 13:45

I mean I am bias, but York is the place to be Wink enough to keep you entertained but not a too big city. Easy to get to the countryside etc for a day out.

Horsemad · 21/03/2021 14:56

[quote RainingBatsAndFrogs]Newcastle is brilliant, IMO!

Excellent city, so attractive, hop on the Metro and be at the seaside at Tynemouth in half an hour. Lovely places within an easy drive, St Mary's Lighthouse, and all the way up the fabulous Northumberland coast - Bambugh is an hour's drive, and lots of lovely places in between
Fantastic moorland close by, The North pennines, Northumberland National Park, all within an hour.

Great culture - theatres, galleries. Fantastic city parks.

I might move here www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/58012071/?search_identifier=cdafc663e6fbd071dc816c34bfa89375

This!

My DS is at uni in Newcastle (currently studying from home though) and every time we've visited I want to move there, just feels like 'home' to me!

It'll never happen but I can dream... 🤨

Maireas · 21/03/2021 15:14

Like pp I'm questioning Bakewell, it's a long way from the coast! Also rammed on Bank Holidays and nice weather.

AhCheeses · 21/03/2021 17:17

Ah you're all fab! Lots of food for thought.
I'm starting a spreadsheet... @notwatchingrugby, its your fault! Wink

Malton? Pickering?

York is too far from the Coast. Well over ab hour unless you're driving at midnight in October.

Have you never had the urge to drive to the beach at midnight in October...!? 😁
