Singer is young...maybe 18-30ish.
Not sure about voice but no distinct foreign twang to it so probably american or British. Solo singer, there was background music but not as in a band. Not sure on the instruments but maybe piano/synthy.

Honeyroar · 03/04/2021 12:49

@FlouncingBabooshka I think that’s when decluttering becomes difficult- when it’s late parent’s stuff. I remember nagging my mum to get rid of stuff when I was in my 20s and she said “just you wait until it’s your turn to throw family things away!” We managed mostly with my mil as she’s wasn’t dead, just going into a home, so it wasn’t as emotional. I keep trying to get my parents to de clutter themselves a lot, then it’s easier for me when the time comes! Being a small holding, there is even our buildings full of stuff. I stand to inherit Britain’s biggest cat boot sale ever. Plus my husband will want to keep it all! They say you marry your father, don’t they!

FlouncingBabooshka · 03/04/2021 12:52

@shinynewapple21 to be honest MrFB is much tidier by nature than me. But the cables, the cables...and he way more clothes than I have though he tries to claim it’s just that they take up more space because they’re bigger.

@Honeyroar yes, it’s so hard. It sounds stupid but I almost feeling like I’m losing my parents a bit more if I ditch something that belonged to them and I feel horribly guilty if I want to get rid of something they gave me.

When I was clearing their house I came across a box of old ornaments and crockery that mum had wrapped up to go to the charity shop but had never got round to donating. All these things were so evocative of a particular time in my life and I had such a strong urge to spirit all of it back to our house. I had to give myself a strong talking to about wanting to keep stuff that even my parents had rejected and were preparing to give away!

The builder has sent through the estimate for the roof - £17.5K.

I feel sick.

Oh blimey! Are you sure as much needs doing as they are saying?

shinynewapple21 · 03/04/2021 14:21

We cleared out my parents' home after they had initially moved into the care home . At the time dad was quite unwell and mum, although physically healthy had quite advanced dementia. They moved into their care home with clothing and a few mementoes, books, CDs etc. and my brother and I had to sort through everything else.

I think my parents had kept everything they had ever bought, been gifted or inherited in 60 years. There was just so much 'stuff', and we decided to be really strict .

In the end we just kept photographs and the odd piece of jewellery.

To be honest, seeing what it was like sorting through my parents stuff has made me a bit stricter with decluttering myself . And since lockdown I've been using a kindle which has saved some shelf space and a lot of trees !

Ouch! That's a LOT of money ☹️

Aah @Wanderlusto if it's a new song from 2000-2004 I'm unlikely to know it unless it was something really popular with a lot of radio play or had lyrics which went something
like 'the wheels on the bus go round and round'! Sorry.

No it's not from then, from before. The 2000-2004 was when I first heard it.
Honeyroar · 03/04/2021 14:47

I think that generation just didn’t throw things away. Things were built to last not be thrown. The trick is not to look in boxes ready packed up for charity shops! I’ve made that mistake.

Ouch to your quote. Is it worth getting a couple more opinions?

NeedToKnow101 · 03/04/2021 14:59

'To be honest, seeing what it was like sorting through my parents stuff has made me a bit stricter with decluttering myself . '

I'm similar Shiny. My dad was a hoarder, and clearing out his stuff took a whole summer (while I was pregnant). My mum just saved everything in case it came in useful one day. 'Luckily', one effect of her cognitive decline was that she didn't mind me throwing stuff away in her last few years. Still lots and lots to sort out when she died though.
I'm quite sentimental towards nick-nacks etc. myself, but I make myself be strict with decluttering. Plus our home is pretty small so we can't keep too much. I'm sure if I had a spare barn I'd fill it with stuff though!!

Right, next I'll post my three favourite songs I heard in Morrison's today Grin

That's very true about a lot of that generation Honey.

And also definitely get a few more quotes FB!

I should do that Shiny but I really love physical books. I get very attached to particular editions of books - so a longtime favourite may have been re-read so often it’s falling apart so I replace it but can’t bring myself to ditch the old edition 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ There’s no hope for me is there?

I understand exactly what you mean about your experience clearing your parents’ house making you stricter about decluttering. It should have had that effect on me. If we had children I definitely wouldn’t want to inflict having to deal with all that but as we sadly don’t the chances are anyone clearing my house will be able to Chuck everything in a skip without a second thought!

We had a massive clear out of clothes recently - I think we had about twenty black sacks full. I think I might try to steel myself to tackle some of the mum and dad boxes next week.

Perhaps I should try to sell some of it 🤔 I just need to find 1750 things and sell them at an average of £10 each and I’m laughing Grin

(Trying to be positive)

FlouncingBabooshka · 03/04/2021 15:30

Oh, and yes to all who mentioned getting some other opinions. I know the builder is highly regarded and trusted round here and is known for charging fairly but it’s such a lot of money it would be daft not to get another opinion/price.

We’re also hoping to get the surveyor we used back out for an independent view of the work needed. He’s been happy to come back a couple of times now as we’ve unearthed various issues 🙄

Oh god FlouncingB no wonder you're in shock, will your insurance cover it?

My dad is a bit of a hoarder. He's still in the house we all grew up in, so many memories, so I understand FlouncingB. He's even got a full train set up in the loft. And all my late mum's stuff is just where she left it. It'll be tough when the time comes.

I have a DH who is obsessed with wood, we have 3 sheds in the garden full of the stuff. Drives me mad. And he's been staring wistfully at another corner of the garden which he says will be perfect for another shed 😱

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/04/2021 16:04

@Wanderlusto. Ok, I've been Googling. There was a tv series, Alias. A sound track from the first series was released in 2001 which included The Hives song you mentioned. It used songs from various years & genres.
I don't have time to research all the songs, but try starting there. Good luck 😊

I was wondering if it might be covered on the insurance too? I suppose you've looked into it though..

NeedToKnow101 · 03/04/2021 16:26

When my mum and dad split up (which was a very good thing in our case) and sold the house, my mum threw away all my childhood books, which I was gutted about, but even worse...... all my Smash Hits and Just Seventeen magazines, and my Professionals fan club magazines.. 😱😱😱😢😢😢😭😭😭😭 I was devastated about that for years.

Fleamaker123 · 03/04/2021 16:45

That's sad NeedToKnow ☹️

My local Morrisons plays great music too, I have been known to loiter in the aisles staring at the baked beans if there's something I like on 😂 they had Lenny Kravitz on once. Brilliant. What was yours playing then?

shinynewapple21 · 03/04/2021 17:42

@FlouncingBabooshka Maybe try selling some of your DH's cables Grin

Love is fading baby
I can see it in your eyes
Your kisses taste the same
But it's just a sweet disguise
