I need some help with maths (for me) please

I'm due a refund for a trip my Guides were meant to go on.

I've been offered £878.40 in total.

11 people paid £144, and 1 paid £96 (it's not a full refund but I'm running out of fight for more tbh).

Can someone help me work out how much the 11 who paid £144 should have out of the £878, and how much the one who paid £96 should have, please?

How much did you pay in total? Or what percentage are you being refunded?

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 15:54

The total for the whole thing was £2088.

I think it's about a 40% refund.

I've just tried to work out 40% of each though, and it didn't add up Blush.

Think I need to brush up my maths skills!

I should say - 2 hadn't paid in full & the original deposits were none refundable anyway which we all knew so they won't be getting a refund.

Assuming I’ve added right, the total paid is 1680 and the refund is 52.26% of that.

So the 11 will get 75.25 each
The other gets 50.17

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 15:57

Sorry Sing I realised I hadn't mentioned the other two participants 🙈

SingToTheSky · 18/03/2021 15:57

Oh but that’s ignoring the stuff in your second post sorry. But in terms of sharing what you’ve been given back I think it’s right (you might need to round up the pennies though)

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 15:59

Thank you so much, my brain's been fried by the whole thing today! Now to put something together to let parents know & hope no-one shoots the messenger 🤞

OP posts:
Carolenarua · 18/03/2021 16:15

So £144 out of total paid £1680 is 8.57% and £96 of £1680 is 5.71%
Finding these percentages of the refund gives about £75.29 for each of the 11 people and £50.19 to you with 3 p over. Smile

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 16:18

I'm back, sorry.

It doesn't seem right that the one who paid less is getting the whole £46 back as well as some of his deposit where the rest aren't getting back the full amount after the deposit.

Not that I'm doing very well at figuring it out

TeenMinusTests · 18/03/2021 16:21

Why had someone paid less? Were they late in paying?

In which case I'd sort of add that £48 back in, and sort out the refunds such that everyone ends losing (ie having paid) the same.

Carolenarua · 18/03/2021 16:22

For the people who paid less, work out their % of the total paid and give them back that same % of the refund. Or let us know the amount they paid .

SingToTheSky · 18/03/2021 16:22

Was the deposit the same amount for everyone? Assuming you mean the one who paid less paid £50 as the deposit?

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 16:30

I'll start again 🙈

£2088 is the total paid between 14.

14 deposits of £50.

11 people paid in full £144
1 person wasn't joining us for as long so paid £96 total (inc. the £50 deposit).

Two hadn't paid in full, just their deposits which will be lost. And the unit can stand the loss as a one off.

So I need to split £878.40 between 11 who paid £144, and one who paid £96.

I hope that makes more sense this time.

OP posts:
PurBal · 18/03/2021 16:33

Was the trip 194 (50+144) or 144?

lucysmam · 18/03/2021 16:36

£144 in total

OP posts:
ChloeCrocodile · 18/03/2021 16:37

You have
-11 people who paid £94 plus non-refundable deposit
-1 person paid £44 above the non-refundable deposit
-3 people only paid the non-refundable deposit.

That means (excluding the deposit) the total paid was £1078.

The refund you've got (£878.40) is actually 81% of the refundable portion of the trip. So I'd give each person 81% of refundable portion they paid.
11 people get £76.60
1 person gets £35.85

So the total money you return is £878.45. Do you have petty cash to make up the extra 5p?

Honeypickle · 18/03/2021 16:40

Who has cancelled - the trip operators or you? If cancelled due to COVID guidelines, I’d argue that the deposit should be refunded!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/03/2021 16:41

The refunds should only be split between those who paid more than their deposits as presumably no deposits are coming back to you.

So you have 11 who overpaid £94
One overpaid £46

That's it.

Ignore the £50s to make it easier.

ChloeCrocodile · 18/03/2021 16:42

Alternatively, you can just pay back as a percentage of the total paid by each person. I'd use the same method though.

-11 people who paid £144
-1 person paid £94
-3 people paid £50

That means the total paid was £1828.

The refund you've got (£878.40) is 48% of the money paid. So you give everyone 48% of their contribution back.

11 people get £69.20
1 person gets £45.17
3 people get £24.03

So the total money you return is £878.46. You'd need to find 6p in petty cash.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2021 16:43

I do know how you got to £2088 in total

dementedpixie · 18/03/2021 16:43

Dont*

Myshinynewname · 18/03/2021 16:44

I agree with @ChloeCrocodile first post. The £50 deposit is non refundable, so take that off then give each person who paid more than the deposit about 80% of the rest back.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/03/2021 16:44

So paid to company is £1080
Payable out between guests is £878.40
That's about 81%

Pay each of them back 80% of what they overpaid.

£76 each to the 11
£36 to the one.

Keep the fiver left over for admin!

Takes you to £884

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/03/2021 16:45

No deposits should be refunded at all.

Those who only paid in deposits are not due it back.

Newkitty · 18/03/2021 16:47

Why does it matter if the money was a deposit or not? I agree with calaneura on the percentages.

You could also say that everyone gets 52.2% of their non deposit money back (£49 for those who paid in full, £24 for the one who didn’t). Then you split the rest equally among all 12, which is £26.40 each

So 11 people get 75.40 and 1 gets 50.40 (approx). But that works out as pretty much the same anyway!
