Looking for a house under 100K. I'd like recommendations on areas that are nice to live in but my experience of the UK is very small, always lived in the same town before we moved abroad.

Must have.....
a garden even if just small
one or two bedrooms
not a flat/apartment
nice area
northern preferred as we have family there
Looking for something we can 'lock up and leave' for up to 6 months per year.

That is a very low budget, but achievable in parts of Huddersfield and Barnsley.

BBC:House price calculator: Where can I afford to rent or buy?

Might be a starting place - then use rightmove other on-line sites to narrow it down but that is low for most of the country.

Chester le Street and surrounding areas, ad many parts of county Durham will fit the bill - expending on what you mean by garden - youre more likely to get a paved area, or small front garden

withpeaceandlove · 15/03/2021 14:22

There's a 3 bedroom with a garden and loft space near me for 85k. We're in Leeds

Love51 · 15/03/2021 14:25

North as is Sheffield, North as in Newcastle, or North as in Aberdeen?
If the city you like is too expensive, you can buy in the town a few miles down the road. Crap area of the nice city, or nicer area of the less nice town. You could let out a place in the city when you aren't using it.
Are you set on a house? Or was it used as a synonym for home?

emmathedilemma · 15/03/2021 14:42

Darlington?

Meceme · 15/03/2021 14:48

Small terrace, reasonable area - Redcar?
My daughter's just bought a 3 bed detached for £150k there.

Kezzie200 · 15/03/2021 15:07

Durham?

MadeForThis · 15/03/2021 15:15

Large parts of N Ireland. Could easily buy a 3 bed terrace.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2021 15:16

Northern is a very large area. No point looking near Middlesbrough if your family are in Liverpool for example.

You'll definitely find something, especially if you can accept normal nice, instead of Mumsnet nice and maybe stick to 1 bedroom. Lots round here, West Yorkshire just outside Leeds.

The biggest barrier to 'just lock up and leave' will be insurance, rather than a concern that it's going to get robbed or firebombed if you're away for an extended period. And most of the people I know who've been burgled live in nice areas anyway. Most burglars have transport and know where to look to find people with money and other valuables.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/03/2021 15:20

Where do your family live? “The North” is quite big....

Squeejit · 15/03/2021 15:22

Lots of Lancashire is affordable in that budget

orpah · 15/03/2021 15:23

where’s ‘northern’? Thurso?

FeistySheep · 15/03/2021 15:27

Definitely Northern Ireland, property seems much cheaper there!

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2021 15:27

There's quite a few nice looking houses under £100k in the Scottish Highlands.

Quite likely to meet the 'safe to lock up and leave' criteria and have decent gardens too.

Biggest downside is remoteness and increased cost of online shopping.

FeistySheep · 15/03/2021 15:28

Oh, unless you meant northern England? You said UK and northern, so I assumed you meant the northern half of the UK?

PattyPan · 15/03/2021 15:32

I just had a quick look on rightmove and Lancaster, Carlisle, Morecambe, Scarborough, Swansea, Leeds, Wigan etc all came up with houses for £100k or less. Depends whereabouts your family are and whether you want to be in a bigger city like Leeds, a smaller one like Lancaster, a village etc.

felulageller · 15/03/2021 15:36

Fife.

IJustLikeBiscuitsOK · 15/03/2021 16:12

Have a look into County Durham. Cheap as chips, some really lovely people, all neighbours friendly etc. It gets a bad rap but from where I am it's 20 minutes to Durham City, and 25 to Newcastle. 5 minutes to Seaham coast, and my 3 bed house with two gardens, well one big back yard and a small front grassed garden, off street parking, a downstairs bathroom and new kitchen/bathroom cost £70k

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 15/03/2021 16:14

North Westeros?

BigPaperBag · 15/03/2021 16:17

Playmobil
Sylvanian families
Barbie House

Sorry OP, couldn’t resist. Err, maybe Plymouth.

lakespring · 15/03/2021 16:19

You will need specialist insurance if you are leaving the property empty for six months at a time.
I would consider buying property near your family so they can keep an eye on it for you.

LubaLuca · 15/03/2021 16:22

Where in the UK is your family? Give a county so people can make sensible suggestions.

Sellandtravel · 15/03/2021 18:42

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions. My family are Lancashire/Manchester/Stoke but we are not stuck for location happy to go to Scotland basically anywhere above Stoke works I think Grin. We want somewhere to be our ‘base’ in the uk whilst we travel as well. I wanted to think a bit out of the box other than Lancs where I know, so your suggestions are very helpful.

North west Cumbrian coast. Very far north. Near to Lake District with beautiful scenery. It’s a bit bleak in places though. Whitehaven and surrounding villages/towns.
