Storing Chunky Jumpers - I've run out of space

Ridiculous problem in the grand scheme of things, but I've never 'solved' how to store jumpers - especially chunky/winter ones. I have a wardrobe that doesn't have any shelving, a large chest of Ikea Hemnes Drawers (that keep breaking) and an ottoman at the foot of the bed (linen and blankets). At the moment, they are crammed into three of the Hemnes drawers which leaves no space for tshirts/underwear/anything else.

I am sick of piles of jumpers everywhere. How do you store them?

I know lots of people are going to say they vacuum pack over summer, and I did that once but had nowhere to put packed bags.

Vac pack them.

partyatthepalace · 15/03/2021 08:42

Under the bed in storage bags - or on top of the wardrobe ditto - or get someone to make you an ottoman that doubles as a seat somewhere handy -or get shelves built into your wardrobe if there’s space.

How many are we talking about? Could you cut down on the amount? Keep the ones you love and wear regularly and donate the rest. No one needs more than 5 or 6 jumpers.

Oh. I've got about 20 Blush I'll get rid of some then.

Vacuum storage bags?

LagneyandCasey · 15/03/2021 10:09

20 is slightly a lot Grin

Apparently if you haven't worn something within the last year you're unlikely to ever wear it. I had a massive cull during lockdown using this method and I'm much happier with my scaled down wardrobe. Seeing the bags full of clothes that I discarded was a bit of an eye opener and now I really think hard before buying clothes I don't need.

But if they all get worn regularly, what's the problem (other than storage in the OP's case)? Posters on here often suggest that people donate excess clothes if the dare to own more than 2 pairs of trousers, 3 tops and a hair shirt, but unless they are in excellent condition they may well end up being thrown out - seems pretty wasteful if they are otherwise items the owner wears and likes, IMO

*thrown out by the charity shop after being donated

Would they fit to hang in your wardrobe? I find they take less space that way than folding them.

SheenMcQueen · 15/03/2021 11:42

Wardrobe is crammed to the point where it's like trying to find a thin file in a huge filing cabinet to extract anything.

I really like ALL my jumpers. I do regularly cull but this is the curated 'culled collection'.

Why must they be so BULKY?

For those suggesting vaccum bags-

I know lots of people are going to say they vacuum pack over summer, and I did that once but had nowhere to put packed bags

SheenMcQueen · 15/03/2021 11:50

Thanks @Sparklingbrook

My underbed storage is crammed and also includes a slide out shoe storage thingy.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2021 11:59

My problem with the vacuum bags is mine always end up in a weird wavy shape which don't store neatly even if there's room.

My Mum has a lot of my stuff in the wardrobe in her spare room. Any chance of a kindly relative having some space OP?

DavidsSchitt · 15/03/2021 12:01

The obvious answer is to get rid of something as you've no space for it all.

CommanderBurnham · 15/03/2021 12:05

It's going to be a combination of things.

Get rid of a few jumpers
Get rid of other things
Find some more storage
Hang your jumpers and fold other stuff. This works sometimes.
As you have reached maximum capacity. There has to be a one in, one out rule.

BIWI · 15/03/2021 12:06

Have you tried rolling them rather than folding them? I seem to manage to store more this way (also easier to find the one I'm looking for!)

BIWI · 15/03/2021 12:08

Can you cull some other clothes instead?

Try on the jumpers and see if they are any that don’t feel quite right.

candlemasbells · 15/03/2021 12:20

Pack them up in a suitcase with any other clothes you don’t wear. Then instead of going shopping for new clothes go through the suitcase.

LittlestBoho · 15/03/2021 12:21

It sounds like every storage space you have is crammed full of stuff. Have you ever read 'The life changing magic of tidying up' by Marie Kondo? It's about how to pare down your 'stuff' until you only have things that you need and use regularly.

It's amazing the crap you manage to accumulate over the years.

TaraR2020 · 15/03/2021 12:21

Do you have loft space or similar? Store out of season clothes in suitcases or boxes (protected obviously).

CrepuscularCritter · 15/03/2021 12:32

Do you have any space elsewhere in the house? For example, we would have space under our sofas for something fairly flat, or else behind the kitchen cabinet baseboards if they can be eased out easily. If you're rotating stuff from storage every six months, that's not too much hassle. And also what BIWI (I think) said about rolling rather than folding. That gor my t shirts from 2 drawers to 1, and they don't crease.

RandomMess · 15/03/2021 12:39

Clearly you need to move to a bigger home 😂

If that isn't an option you need to get rid of "stuff" and maximise storage.

SheenMcQueen · 15/03/2021 17:13

Do you know what? This thread has made me realise what I sort of knew all along but hadn't really dealt with, DH has too much fucking crap. We have a garage, some loft space and a reasonable sized four bed house. The reason that there is no room for my jumpers is because he won't get rid of any of his clothes. Our house is clean and tidy because I can't stand clutter and mess, but every drawer, suitcase, nook and cranny is full of his bagged up clothes that he 'might wear again'. He has a large wardrobe, a huge chest of drawers, a separate hanging rail in the spare bedroom and still has towers of clothes on the chair, and the suitcase and loft are full of old cases of things like ski clothes that he wore when he was 20 - he is 46.

He isn't a hoarder of things - but fuck me - I've just realised his clothes are everywhere.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 15/03/2021 17:18

So what are you going to do?

Will he actually notice if you have clear out of his stuff?
