Eczema on child's legs - stinging?

100young · 14/03/2021 20:22

My DS3 has a rash on his legs. It's gotten increasingly worse over last few days - pharmacy has told me to contact GP tomorrow.

However, he's not long missed the potty when he had a final wee before nighttime nappy. The wee ran down his legs and he was in absolute hysterics, crying, screaming etc so it was obviously causing pain.

Anyone with kids with eczema that's had the same? What can I do to soothe his legs before getting to the GP's tomorrow? Thanks.

Do you know for sure it’s eczema op?
Has he had this before and been diagnosed, or is this the first time he has had this rash?

100young · 14/03/2021 20:28

He's had it before and we were told to use aveeno. It helped somewhat, but it's come back with a vengeance. Incidentally, he first had it in February last year and it's come back at a similar time of year so we were wondering if it was allergy related. It gets worse in water which is strange

My youngest used have this neck to ankles, I used to bath him twice a day, haldens cream in bath, rub him down with liquid paraffin, then bath then cover him in liquid paraffin gel. A gp told me to put half cup of bleach in bath, to prevent infection. I did and son was ok. Then cotton pjs inside out so no seams .. and he was allergic to cows milk so switched to soya.. hes 9 this year...

We're keeping a food diary. Did the switch from cows milk help?

On Sunday night no pharmacy open, i would smother him in clean vaseline after bath - to keep in moisture take him to doctor tomorrow. To be clear my son had eczema and used to bleed with itch.. he might be prescribed steroid cream to calm it down by doctor.

Thank you. Will pop some Vaseline on. It doesn't appear to itch at all. But the wee running down his legs has made him really uncomfortable

Yes, he developed allergy at 3 months, I was breastfeeding, exhausted from bathing my greasy fish baby.. I gave up all dairy, breastfed only , and he was alot better after 2 weeks... one piece of chocolate.. back itching again.. hes grown out of it now but if he drinks alot of dairy he ll get it back behind his knees..

KILNAMATRA · 14/03/2021 20:45

Well st least if he pees again the oil in the vaseline will keep it off the skin... I d lather it on..

PoptartPoptart · 14/03/2021 20:48

If you have any Piriton it may help

Yep he's been having piriton regularly over the weekend, it's not made any difference unfortunately

Poor boy that does look really sore - hope you can get a GP appointment tomorrow and yes I can imagine wee would really hurt when it's red and inflamed like that

you can buy some stronger emollients over the counter tomorrow but first prize is the GP appointment

Gunpowder · 14/03/2021 20:53

DS has this too! Have also been wondering about a cows milk allergy/intolerance.

Pharmacy wouldn't give us anything when I went yesterday. Apparently they can't give anything strong to under 12's without a prescription. Really hoping we can get an appointment tomorrow - it's so hard to get in at the moment!

DS is a milk beast - he drinks a lot of it. However it comes and goes and I would've thought it would be there all the time if it's a food intolerance?

Yes I’ve had the same thoughts. I showed the pharmacist and she sold me some fungal cream which seemed to help a bit (it was very inflamed and the skin was broken behind one knee) but it still hasn’t gone after two weeks.

I’d be interested to hear what your GP says!

Probably needs strong hydrocortisone and an antibiotic cream. I can imagine the pee would hurt as the skin is broken

WeakAsIAm · 14/03/2021 21:22

Eczema sufferer here, water makes mine worse too cannot leave any water on my skin so make sure he is dry (sounds very against what you're trying to do but trust me) but avoid rubbing the skin
2nd Vaseline until you can get him something from the GP, it's will help to keep the moisture inside and is quite durable so will stay put longer.
Bless him total empathy

carnations23 · 14/03/2021 21:22

I've been using sudocream on my eczema and it's cleared it up really well.

And I've tried a lot of things that just don't work for me .

Rodent01 · 14/03/2021 21:28

DD 3 1/2 has just this pattern - back of logs and patches all over legs. She isn’t in pain but v itchy.

Hydrocortisone is magic to get rid and then we have Epaderm to slather all over and that has been magic.

We haven’t seen Gp, they’ve asked for photos and diagnosed from those. Def need GP to prescribe!

Good luck! I’m hoping this will lessen in the summer, it’s been around since November!

Disneymum1993 · 14/03/2021 21:28

Use goat milk soap if you can get some I get it from Amazon and dream cream from lush my daughters 7 and is covered in it and hers stings if she dribbles etc as her legs covered and near bottom too

Owwlie · 14/03/2021 21:30

That looks a lot like DDs eczema. She was diagnosed with CMPA as a baby and was on prescription formula, but it’s more manageable now she’s 3, she just gets eczema when she’s had too much dairy. Other things can aggravate it though, like water in the bath being too warm, some bubble baths or shampoos and the cold weather.

Oilatum for baths helped a bit, as did aveeno and child’s farm creams. But a steroid cream from the GP is the only thing that helps when it’s flared up like that. It works better for us with a quite thick layer of sudocrem on top of it at bedtime. We see quite a big difference in it by morning then.

Rizzoli123 · 14/03/2021 21:39

Ive had eczema since i was a child. I am use oliatium. They do a junior version to. I also use cetreban. One of my friends said to usr a old tight, chop one leg offand fill it with porridge oats tie it and add it to the bath
