I've just started watching I Think We're Alone Now and this is the premise. I'm only 8 minutes in and we've just seen how our hero spends his time.

I think it's a fascinating idea so I had to pause it to consider what I would do. What would you do?

I’ve got enough pasta for a year! Plus quite a lot of dried pulses and beans. Id just ‘go shopping’ and stock up.

ivykaty44 · 16/03/2021 08:50

Go for a bike ride

Ninkanink · 16/03/2021 08:52

I’d get pretty nifty with big tools!

TinySongstress Interesting case about a woman who made her suicide look like murder and her husband was a vet, she used his supplies - he served 2 years and then someone found her note, he was releases from prison

@ChocOrange1

I'm pretty sure I would kill myself quite quickly. I have read the whole thread and none of the other options appeal to me. I feel sad now, almost in tears just thinking about it, I really don't think I could cope without my kids and no support network.

Maybe if it had happened before I had my children I might feel differently, but I expect in the long run anyone in this situation would end up taking their own lives.

The key is the bodies. If there's none, they'll come back.

This is the story in one of my favourite Twilight Zone episodes. The man in that takes his lunch break in the bank vault, there's a suggestion he prefers the company of a good book to actual people. He emerges as a lone survivor of some great disaster, scenes of devastation. He goes to the library and then to the supermarket which no longer has doors or windows. He makes his way back and drops his glasses smashing them. The story ends here with the knowledge that without his glasses he won't be able to read. As a child this bit annoyed me, surely he can make his way to the Opticians?!
I loved this episode

Am I the only one who has spent too much time researching what home I would take over? Nope.

It strikes me that this would make quite an interesting therapeutic activity, along the lines of the six part story or drawing a house. Each person's response tells us something about their life script.

Large bottle of pills washed down with a bottle of vodka. I would have absolutely no interest in living in a world that didn't have DH or our DCs in it.

Bluegrass · 16/03/2021 11:20

I think I would spend a short amount of time nosing around a few interesting places I’ve never been inside, but I’d find a gun to take with me first. The thought of finding myself accidentally trapped somewhere and slowly dying of thirst, or having some other accident that left me immobile and helpless is pretty awful, so I’d need a gun as some reassurance that I could make a quick exit from life Sad

I think the loneliness and constant fear of injury / illness / animal attack with no possibility of help etc would quickly become overwhelming, I’m afraid I would last too long.

The hell?! Incredible.
PantherPantherus · 16/03/2021 11:46

I would find and fill up a land rover with a full tank of petrol, put as many garden tools in the back as I could. Then I would drive down to the Eden Project and make that my base for the future. On the way I would call into a library and collect as many self-sufficiency and engineering reference books as I could.

I would make sure I had a book on How To Control Japanese Knotweed because that is sure as hell going to take over the Earth eventually.

Nymerialuna · 16/03/2021 12:22

I am far too invested in this!
First I would research any houses that are off grid with electric etc and make plans to make my way there and move in.
I would then get loads of ink for the printer to print off locations of places I can raid for future stock, generators and fuel. I would also try and print as much info about self sufficiency as possible.Then download a whole bunch of shows and films for future viewing before the internet goes completely down.
Once I am in my new self sufficient house, I would get as many freezers as I can and install in my new house before hitting the shops for food and supplies that can be frozen (with a large enough house that is generating its own electricity, I figure with enough freezers I should be set).
Next raid would be for non perisherables (tinned goods, water, cleaning suppliers, loo roll etc) as I suspect the supermarkets will soon be overrun by rats and other animals.
Next is stocking up on fuel and some generators. Then it's hitting the hardware shops for tools and equipment to create and secure some vegetable patches, as well as secure the house from wild animals. I would also grab some storage for water.
Now it's time to raid some vehicles and stock up on petrol / deisel as well as some weapons / protection for myself.

Once that's all done, I am stocking up on warm and pratical clothing and medical supplies (including as many medical books I can get my hands on).
Now my attention turns to entertainment (although I am not sure I will have a great deal of time for that) so I am raising for DVDs, CDs and books.
Depending on how much the animals have taken over at this point, and how aggresive they are, I would then visit stately homes, museums etc and all the expensive shops to grab some lovely jewels and designer items, just for fun.

@Parkerwhereareyou

Go to the nearest hospital and defrost some sperm.
@Parkerwhereareyou

I see your point, but I'd be far too scared about giving birth entirely alone to use the sperm!!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 16/03/2021 14:13

@LemonViolet

I’ll spend some time doing that in London before heading off to Spain

How are you planning on getting to Spain? (If you're in the U.K.)

you could keep taking cars and drive through the tunnel, through france and into spain- This would be my longer term plan- just essenitally see how far I could get before having to cross water

jessstan2 · 16/03/2021 14:24

I did dream that when I was about ten. I was riding my little bike around the park and realised there was nobody else, not just in the park but anywhere.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 16/03/2021 14:27

@cyclingmad

Having had some time to think more, I'd want to unearth all these conspiracy theories cos lets face it noone can stop me

I'd go to the oval office and see all the secrets, id also go to the FBI and see all the classified documents, travel to area 51 and really see wtf really is going on there

I could travel to North Korea without being locked up!

Can you fly a large plane?

@cyclingmad

Prettybubblesintheair · 16/03/2021 14:27

I’m worried about breaking into places, personally I’m with those swanning around in diamonds and I’ll probably get a variety of wedding dresses too but I’ll have to break into jewellery shops and wedding dress shops to get those and I’m worried they’ll have gated alarm systems and I’ll be trapped like that friends episode where phoebe is in the tiny jail and then I’ll be stuck there and starve to death. So I’m trying to think of ways around that at the moment. I’m a sober alcoholic (1 year sober in April!) so I don’t think I would drink as I would actually just drink until I’m completely useless and not achieve any sort of survival but that depends on whether I know my kids and dh are dead or have they just mysteriously disappeared with a note saying they’ll be back someday in. If I know they’re dead then I would probably drink and take all the drugs to see myself off but if they might be coming back I’d want to survive for them so I wouldn’t drink. I would carry a bottle with me along with lots of morphine in case something happened and I absolutely had to off myself or I’d die a very long painful death.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 16/03/2021 14:28

In idle moments I keep drifting back to this and refining my plan Grin

What I’m currently worried about is finding my perfect off grid hideout with the latest fancy solar power, eco everything but all the maintenance information is online Shock then what?!

So now I’m worried about prioritising locating my new home ASAP so that I can download all reference manuals, locate factories for spare parts etc before the internet went kaput.

How long do you think the internet would keep going in this scenario? This makes me realise I have absolutely no idea about how it is ‘powered’!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 16/03/2021 14:28

@crochetmonkey74.
I assumed the tunnel would be impossible to access without all the staff who work there?!

Myneighboursdomyheadin · 16/03/2021 14:29

GoLightlyontheEarth

This post below is one of those ones that seem like an incredibly stupid question but then you start to think about it and it isn't :)

"Well you couldn’t put the kettle on as there would be no electricity. Your dinner might be a problem as you couldn’t cook it on a cooker and the supermarkets would be empty".

"I'm not up on this stuff, but how much of that is automated tho? How long would it all continue without someone to press buttons and levers?"

ivykaty44 · 16/03/2021 14:35

I would find and fill up a land rover with a full tank of petrol

how can you do that without electricity?

TroysMammy · 16/03/2021 15:06

ivykaty44 with a plastic tube, bucket and a funnel.

crochetmonkey74 · 16/03/2021 15:07

In my fantasy- the doors of shops are not locked and the tunnel etc is accessible- I'm just making it easy on myself!

HeronLanyon · 16/03/2021 15:08

I too keep returning to this.
My current problem is once I decide to make the move out of london to a well set up off grid property (and I have one in mind far west of Cornwall) I’d end up a huge distance from nearest big townie even small city for raiding trips. It’s hard to find the balance between being self sufficient and close to b and q /R9bert dyas/Ryman/Jewsons/mountain warehouse and supermarkets for long life stuff. Then I realise I’d need horses and pack horses and if so some vet skills etc. It is a conundrum !
