Do painted kitchen doors and tiles ever look good?

Or do they always look a bit naff?

Currently trying to buy a house (I don't think there is actually a chance in hell of the mortgage being approved but it's nice to dream after years of renting mould infested shitholes) and it has a plain wood kitchen. Sort of a mid oak colour, probably put in about ten years ago, terracotta wall tiles.

I'd love to paint the kitchen units and tiles but I'm terrified it will look a bit crap or will start to peel. I've stopped looking at some of the horrors on DIY Facebook pages!

It's not an interim thing, we'll probably never be able to change the kitchen (and getting the house might just be a pipe dream), I just want to make something the way I want it after a lifetime of not even being able to put a nail in the wall!

kitchen doors can look ok with a lot of sanding and priming first, tiles in my experience no. We've tried it before and they just ended up peeling and looking a bit rubbish.

Fuckadoodledoooo · 12/03/2021 12:18

That's my worry. They are just the wrapped MDF doors. So how would that work with painting?

Doors yes
Tiles no

I'd just go with painting the tiles white and then I guess you can go over where the grout was with a white grout pen?

Luckily the kitchen cabinets are pretty bland and inoffensive, I've just got ideas above my staton of one of those sage green John Lewis ones Grin

Would your budget stretch to buying something like these? I know they say floor tiles but I can’t see why you couldn’t stick on walls.

Massive caveat, I’ve never used them 😄

If you get a good brand of paint (French Chic for example) it can be transformative.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 12/03/2021 12:27

Don't paint the tiles it's never a good look.
Live with it save like crazy and then get the cupboard doors and drawer fronts replaced if they aren't solid wood and paintable. Then pick off the tiles and have new ones put on. Watch you tube videos of how to, lots of different ones as people have different tips and tricks. YOu'll be good at it in no time.

Doors, yes. Tiles, no.

Pearbear · 12/03/2021 12:32

I painted my kitchen units almost a year ago and so far they’re holding up really well, not a single mark or chip on them. I went for a sage green paint and it’s a huge improvement on beech veneers

didireallyjustsaythat · 12/03/2021 12:40

Have you thought about wrapping the kitchen units with vinyl wrap? Most diy stores sell it, also Wilkinson's I think. You can change the look of your kitchen without having to spend too much.

Blobby10 · 12/03/2021 12:40

I repainted my kitchen units last year and, in my humble opinion, they look awesome!! yes there are a couple of paint issues (I was a bit too desperate to get it finished so cut some corners) but only to the very very critical! I'm amazed at the difference just painting them has made.

Fuckadoodledoooo · 12/03/2021 12:42

Regarding tiles, I've seen people cover them with these sticky ones. They are thicker than the transfer stickers. Might be an option until we can afford to re tile?

I guess I could always take one door off and paint it and see?

I hadn't thought of vinyl wrap. I honestly think I'd cock that up though!

We painted ours - tiles and cabinets. Worked very well.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/03/2021 12:50

The wrapping came off the MDF doors in my utility at the point where I was considering a whole kitchen refit.
I peeled it all off and the bloke I'm seeing spray painted them with car paint (I had a choice of British racing green, TVR purple, or cream - he was quite disappointed I said cream).
He did a REALLY good job of them, but it was a semi-professional spray paint set up and only 2 doors.
I did consider it for the whole kitchen (which was solid wood, about 20 years old) but it would also have needed end panels, coving etc doing and I wanted a layout change so in the end did a refit.

Howzaboutye · 12/03/2021 12:53

Sugar soap is your friend. Really scrub the doors clean before you even think about painting.
Light sanding then paint with specialist cupboard paint.
It will look great, go for it!

YogaLite · 12/03/2021 12:54

Have used sticky back tile squares for my splashback behind the hob and I am very happy with the look.

What u could do is add a design like a border row or a splashback over the existing tiles. Don't rush into everything from day 1, u can always change at a later stage.

HairyToity · 12/03/2021 12:56

We changed the tiles and worktop but kept the wooden units (the previous owners had spent a lot of money on an oak kitchen in the 1990s, we didn't like to replace a made to measure kitchen with Howdens or IKEA - as this was all we could afford). We put some lovely colourful artwork up too. I didn't paint the units, considered it, but was costly to have it done professionally, and worried it would scuff over time.

SpringisSpinning · 12/03/2021 14:14

very easy to paint tiles and one would never know it wasnt the true colour. I would go for it all op - the power of paint!

ineedaholidayandwine · 12/03/2021 14:44

These are my painted worktop/cupboards/tiles.
Can't use bleach/zoflora on them but they've been fine
Worktop was beige, doors were dark stained pine.

Apologies, i didn't paint them myself, a company came to the house and sprayed them, great service, only took 2 days, day 1 to prime day 2 to paint

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 12/03/2021 14:46

Friends of mine used Hammerite spray paint in white on kitchen tiles and the result was great.

JackieTheFart · 12/03/2021 14:47

I’ve just painted my doors. The wrapping stuff came off super duper easily and I think they look great.

Not quite done as need to do the end caps. Overall a weekend of work. I used Dulux eggshell as recommended by some instagrammer.

I painted both my old kitchen cupboards and tiles. It lasted and looked good for 5 years before we had our extension and new kitchen put in.

Do your cupboards and see how it looks, you may find you like the tiles better with different colour units.
