Burn advice

pinkywinks · 11/03/2021 22:02

I burnt my fingers while putting a log in the stove about an hour ago. The skin went white pretty much immediately and I held it under cool running water for at least 10 mins and probably longer, then stuck my hand in a bowl of cold water for a while longer.

NHS advice is to seek medical advice for burns on the hand but that seems OTT. Would you go to A&E for this?

Ice and sudocrem

parietal · 11/03/2021 22:16

when I had a similar burn, NHS direct told me to wrap it in clingfilm to keep it moist & take aspirin for pain.

I also put a very gentle AloeVera moisturizer under the clingfilm but that wasn't something the NHS said.

PurpleDaisies · 11/03/2021 22:18

@wizzbangfizz

Ice and sudocrem
No. Do not put ice on burns. Do not put sudocreme on fresh burns.

I bloody hate mumsnet idiotic burns advice.

Op 111 can give you burns advice over the phone and tell you if you need a and e.

Don’t do sudocrem.

If you cover it, cover it with cling film and leave one end untapped so it can breathe. Covering it will stop it hurting but covering it with cling film allows doctors and nurses to see it without removing the covering.

Ring 111. When I scalded myself they asked if any blisters were larger than a 5p and when I said they were they told me to go straight to minor injuries. My burn was larger than yours, I burnt myself late at night and didn’t think it warranted a trip to A&E. I was in agony in the morning, which is when I rang 111. As I got to minor injuries the nurse practitioner told me off for not going straight to A&E when I did it the night before. When I explained I didn’t think it was A&E worthy he told me I wasn’t a medical professional.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 11/03/2021 22:19

*untapped not untapped

toffeebutterpopcorn · 11/03/2021 22:22

Gosh that looks bad (and this is someone whose own family call ‘flamibletoffee’).

Definitely call the nhs helpline. Yes cover with clingfilm (loosely so air can get to it). I find they do need to ‘dry out’ and it will be more painful tomorrow (sorry).

I wouldn't go to a&e. I might take a paracetamol if it really hurt. (But I've never been to a&e.....my leg would need to be sticking out at right angles.before I go....).

It hasn't even blistered. I'm sure you'll get a lot of people telling you to go, but I wouldn't.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 11/03/2021 22:24

I know it’s not much use now but you can get burn gel which is really good.

Fuss · 11/03/2021 22:27

Specialist burn dressings from Tesco worked when my idiot DS microwaved a metallic mug and then picked it up. He actually burnt off his fingerprints for a time silly boy.

Used the burn dressings and kept them covered. Don’t be tempted to burst blisters. You can get spray as well which takes 5e edge off but that’s more for immediate relief.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/03/2021 22:27

Please don’t go to A&E with that.

cerseii · 11/03/2021 22:29

Chuckled a bit at this because I did something similar recently😬 solidarity

I had to go to A&E due to the location of mine, but all they did was clean it and dress it and provide me with extra dressings. Mine didn’t blister luckily.

Your index finger looks like it will blister tomorrow. You want to use non-stick dressings or specific burns plasters. When it blisters, it would be best to seek medical assistance as it’s safer for a medical professional to lance it. It’s in such an awkward position that you may accidentally pop it and run an elevated risk of infection.

NattyDiamondDoll · 11/03/2021 22:29

I recently gave myself ice burns and had large blisters, didn't even think to go to A&E, perhaps I should have? Although I was recovering from an operation so was on antibiotics which may have helped. I've been using Savlon advanced healing gel for the past few weeks which is amazing, would highly recommend.

cerseii · 11/03/2021 22:32

NHS website actually states to seek A&E assistance for burns on hands that blister so ignore those telling you not to!

NannyR · 11/03/2021 22:35

I'd go see a pharmacist for initial advice tomorrow morning. On the first aid courses I've been on, they have always said that burns to the fingers should be checked out, however innocuous they look, as scarring can affect the movement of the fingers.

The absence of blisters is the reason people are saying not to go to A&E.

pinkywinks · 11/03/2021 22:41

Thanks for the advice! I actually have put sudocream on it, on the advice of a nurse family member Confused should I clean it off and put cling film on?

It's feeling tight now when I bend my finger, which I guess is to be expected. I never go to A&E and would feel stupid doing it for this type of thing, just wondered what others would do in my position.

I'm in NI so we don't have NHS 111, I would have to call the out of hours GP or go to A&E.

Pharmacist in the morning is a good shout actually! I work next to one so I'll pop in. Should I cover it tonight? I'll have to hunt for the first aid kit and hope nothings out of date lol

@activitythree I understand but this happened recently - an hour before OP posted. A blister can still form, this isn’t the final stage

cerseii · 11/03/2021 22:44

Yep, clean it off and use something like savlon cream/gel instead then wrap in cling film. Hopefully it doesn’t blister

activitythree · 11/03/2021 22:46

It doesn't matter. The advice isn't to go just in case you get a blister, it's to go if it blisters. Do you think they are going to do half hourly instead on OP fingers just in case Confused

activitythree · 11/03/2021 22:46

Half hours OBS

pinkywinks · 11/03/2021 22:47

Ok I'll do that. Then pharmacist in the morning. Thanks!

YellowPurple · 11/03/2021 22:47

Sudocrem and wrap loosely in clingfilm

The advice is also to go with burns of any size that cause white skin.
YellowPurple · 11/03/2021 22:48

Why not sudo?

I recently had burns very similar and done sudo.

It says on the tub for burns, so why not???
