Burn advice

pinkywinks · 11/03/2021 22:02

I burnt my fingers while putting a log in the stove about an hour ago. The skin went white pretty much immediately and I held it under cool running water for at least 10 mins and probably longer, then stuck my hand in a bowl of cold water for a while longer.

NHS advice is to seek medical advice for burns on the hand but that seems OTT. Would you go to A&E for this?

Do you have any germolene OP? I did something similar a while ago & germolene did numb the pain ( it contains mild anesthetic) worked wonders for me.

Sudocrem is for surface wounds too & it also contains a mild anesthetic, I've just looked it up & it says it can be applied to minor burns on the website 👍🏻

What do you actually think is going to happen to your finger?

cerseii · 11/03/2021 22:50

@PurpleDaisies thanks for that, that was one of the reasons I was told to go to A&E by 111. Completely slipped my mind. I thought something didn’t sound right above

The advice is also to go with burns of any size that cause white skin.

Sorry I was directly responding the the person who said to go if it blistered. It hasn't blistered.

You are correct re the white skin thing, although it wouldn't cross my mind to go to A&E for this. But I do see the NHS advise it.

Well presumably the NHS give the advice for a reason, but I also know that sometimes common sense can avoid a trip to A&E for something not life threatening.

I'm not necessarily worried, I just don't have to deal with burns terribly often thankfully and wanted to know what others would do in my position.

No germolene, but have savlon and yellow metanium.

If you have a 24 hour Tesco nearby pop in and get some burn aid. It is good for burns like this.

Ridiculousradish · 11/03/2021 22:56

I burn myself regularly (am a total klutz), and always use lavender oil. Really helps..

SorryPardonWhat · 11/03/2021 22:59

The question I got from 111 for similar was 'does it look waxy?' If the white burns look like wax go to a&e or a walk in.

YellowPurple · 11/03/2021 22:59

Sudocrem is 100% fine OP

Krazynights34 · 11/03/2021 23:02

Cling film is the thing to do. If it’s a scald or a burn there’s different advice.
Read the NHS advice- people are always giving daft advice on MN.
I burned my foot a couple of weeks ago (scald) - cling film sorted it out

HazeyJaneII · 11/03/2021 23:05

Please don't put any creams or oils on it, and don't use ice to cool. If you put cling film on it, lay it across it rather than wrap around.
NHS Advice
Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm running waterfor20 minutes as soon as possible after the injury. Never use ice, iced water, or any creams or greasy substances like butter.

Call 111 or minor injuries for further advice

Mykittensaremyfriends · 11/03/2021 23:14

Sudocrem is absolutely fine for burns - pharmacist has previously advised me to use it rather than any other creams/moisturisers to treat burns because it was actually designed for burns before it became used for other conditions.

Supmama · 11/03/2021 23:14

If it was me I would keep running under cold water for a good half hour although I'm sure you have done that after that I used lavender oil on my burns (always keep a little bottle in my kitchen £1/2 at homebargins, it takes the sting out and if you keep reapply as it heals it really helps to minimise scars.

pinkywinks · 11/03/2021 23:17

The pain has subsided a fair bit and I've got a layer of sudocrem and a non stick burn dressing on it for tonight. Will see what the morning brings and go from there. Thanks to all for the constructive advice!

Pinkywinks how did you get on with you're burns ??

Burnt two fingers and thumb on a cup handle out of the microwave’ didn’t realise the cup handle would burn me but should have coz it was painted gold 🙄😞

Bandaged finger is worst .. it is white and thickened and you can see third finger it has Germolene on it

Not sure if I should go to A&E
