Half day/One day 'illness' - anyone else get this?

This doesn't even warrant posting in General Health I don't think but I wondered if anyone else gets 'sick' for really short periods of time?

I'm not talking about getting a headache or something, but more like that feeling just before you get really poorly: temperature, everything aches, exhaustion, upset tummy, headache, shaky and spaced out etc. I get this sometimes and it happened again yesterday. I felt so awful - shivery, hot, weak - even my skin 'hurt' - that I ended up taking to my bed. Now DH and DC were a bit Confused as it came on so suddenly and I'm right as rain today.

But I really did feel quite unwell. I am not someone to 'take to my bed', and this isn't the first or even second time that I've felt like I"m about to get really sick only to turn it round overnight or later in the day. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yes, it happens to me when I am very tired or after a stressful time at work. I also get the symptoms of a bad cold.

Feraltomcat · 11/03/2021 16:24

Yep me, DH thinks I'm really weird! I'll feel like I'm coming down with something, have a good sleep and fine the next day. I think it's just how my body tells me to get some sleep Grin

muddledmidget · 11/03/2021 16:25

I get it, usually when my immune system is busy. I work in an environment with many colds and bugs going around, and while I very rarely actually get ill and have symptoms with any of the bugs, I do have half a day of feeling as you described, which I assume is my immune system working, as its similar to the reaction I get after a vaccination.

I've had it now again.

Often before a period though or if I'm very very tired

ArtemisBean · 11/03/2021 16:29

When I'm going through periods of high stress and poor sleep, I get sleep inertia, which I hadn't even realised was a thing until recently! It makes me groggy, spaced out, and just generally a bit icky. Only for an hour or so sometimes, when I wake up from a nap. Other times for most of the day.

Notgotanyidea · 11/03/2021 16:38

Yes, once every 6 months or so. I go to bed as soon as I get home from work (about 6.30) and wake up usual time the following morning back to normal. Luckily DH works from home and children are not little anymore. Very odd.

Neverspeakofthisagain · 11/03/2021 16:39

This is really interesting. I don't know anyone else this happens to. It is bad enough that I am often certain I am about to come down with something 'proper'. It's sort of like the day before being floored by tonsilitis or proper flu or when I had meningitis or quincy. And yet, I usually take 2 ibuprofen/paracetamol for the aches/pains/temperature and go to sleep, and will quite often wake up six hours later, feeling almost normal.

But I have to do the sleep bit so the idea that I've 'nearly' caught something and my body is doing battle (and winning) makes sense and would account for the fact that I have to sleep.

Yes! I am very rarely actually poorly (as in needing a few days off work, antibiotics etc) but I get this quite often.

It can come on really quickly - I could be in Asda doing the food shop and I’ll suddenly have a massive cold with really sore sinuses and a temperature. About twelve hours later I’ll be fine.

cerseii · 11/03/2021 16:41

Me, I just attribute it to stress and feeling tired. Sometimes you need to give yourself a day off

Neverspeakofthisagain · 11/03/2021 16:42

@sobloodyconfusing

Same. I can count on one hand the times I've been 'proper' ill. I don't get colds or flu the way many do, but I do get this a few times a year.

I started getting this since November coinciding with when I started immunosuppressants.

I used to occasionally and predictably get it if I had been overdoing it or if something was going round - slight head cold and usually fixed by some Berocca.

Then I started getting the slight head cold combined with migraine and nausea. Migraine and nausea are stress symptoms for me.

Now I get the slight headcold with migraine, nausea and brainfog. Brainfog is the worst one.

I still find vitamin C helps, paracetomol. Also eating adequate greens and keeping blood sugar stable helps prevent them.

MangoBiscuit · 11/03/2021 16:48

If I get really stressed, yes, occasionally. The worst I've ever had it was in the early stages of my divorce, when my ex was being an asshole around the DC, and I over trained at the gym as a way to deal with the stress. I visited my parents, sat on the sofa, and crumpled. In less than an hour I had a high fever, shivering, couldn't stand I was so dizzy, couldn't eat, hurt to drink, joints hurt, skin hurt, blurry vision, could barely keep my eyes open I was so tired. I napped, and dipped tea. The following evening I was right as rain.

Now, if I suddenly feel very tired, or I start getting shivery without actually feeling cold, I stop and rest. It actually scared me feeling that ill so quickly.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 11/03/2021 16:50

Yes I get this. It seems to be linked to my menstrual cycle some months, extreme exhaustion or stress in others.

Neverspeakofthisagain · 11/03/2021 16:52

It does come on quickly and can be a bit scary @MangoBiscuit. That's one of the reasons I posted here - it catches me off guard and because it doesn't ever become anything, I can't quite understand how I could feel SO ill for it be, apparently, nothing, and resolved within hours.

And I've not found anyone else who reported anything similar. My family thinks I'm weird...

notalwaysalondoner · 11/03/2021 16:56

Isn’t this quite normal? Unless it’s really frequent. I assume it’s when your immune response kicks off but does really well so you never develop a full blown illness. I have to say I don’t have it often, normally if I’m ill enough to go to bed or have a fever it will be at least 2-3 days, but have had it on occasion.

oneglassandpuzzled · 11/03/2021 16:58

I have this. Sometimes my neck glands come up too and it’s a a warning to look after myself.

mommybunny · 11/03/2021 17:03

I had this in December - Friday afternoon started feeling a bit off, then later a bit achy and finally a full blown fever, shaking violently with chills, by 9pm. I was terrified I had COVID and booked a test the next day and isolated myself away from my family. By the time the test came back negative Sunday morning I was absolutely fine.

This does happen to me every so often - I remember it happening once over 20 years ago when I was taking a law school exam in a subject I liked and was well prepared for but didn’t do well in. It lasts no more than 24 hours then I’m fine.

WorriedMillie · 11/03/2021 17:07

I get this, I’m very rarely I’ll, but I have a very efficient immune system and I’m pretty sure it’s that, batting off whatever is going around
I feel proper groggy, swollen lymph nodes, flu like
Early night and I’m right as rain the next day!

MsIreneWinters · 11/03/2021 17:09

I am anaemic and during periods of very low iron I feel like this. Particularly the shakiness and feeling like my skin hurts. It wears off after I've had a rest

EarringsandLipstick · 11/03/2021 17:16

Yes! I get this & so interesting to read the posts here.

I'm from a family where you cannot be sick & tend to push through when I am sick.

So when I get these episodes I'm like 'huh?' How can I be sick in this temporary here-and-gone again way?

TheVolturi · 11/03/2021 17:26

Get this regularly! Usually linked to my cycle (before period and then at ovulation time)
And strangely, I always get like this after I've been out in the cold for any length of time, I come back in and feel shivery and hot and cold for the rest of the day.

Tangledtresses · 11/03/2021 17:34

Yes starts with feeling very tired and feverish and night sweats , the next day I'm fine

I do have kids so I think it's my immune system kicking in and low and behold the kids get a cold or something over the next few days

MissFlite · 11/03/2021 17:39

Yes occasionally. It's nearly always to do with needing more sleep!

Imissmoominmama · 11/03/2021 17:41

I get this regularly. I can’t function; shiver uncontrollably, and just need to go to bed. I’m always ok by the next morning. DH usually puts an extra blanket over me and leaves me to it.

Neverspeakofthisagain · 11/03/2021 20:44

I'm finding this thread really reassuring. I don't feel like it's 'just me' and the explanation about it being when your immune system is in 'fighting off a bug' mode, makes complete sense.
