I do. Not sure what I'm frightened of exactly.. damage to property I think.

Its just so uncontrollable.

I don't find the wind in itself scary, but I feel nervous about trees falling down. I didn't mind the sound of the wind when we didn't have a garden.

FedNlanders · 11/03/2021 07:20

@weegiemum

No, but when I was a teacher it was up there with snow for making kids hyper - and that was in secondary. No idea how bad it must be in primary.

I lived in the Outer Hebrides for 10 years, your lily-livered, mainlander "wind" doesn't affect me!GrinGrin

Yep. In a school kids are usually much more rowdy in windy conditions!
LApprentiSorcier · 11/03/2021 07:20

Yes, it terrifies me. I start to feel anxious as soon as I see the black triangles on the weather forecast and think 'please let it be rain or snow or ice or fog' because nothing frightens me like the wind.

Deathraystare · 11/03/2021 07:22

I remember when we had the hurricane - the cat flap kept banging until I put something in front of it. The cats of course knew something was wrong before it came as they sent most of the day and night under a table!

It was a bit woo in my flat last night. I was on my own and the fire door in the kitchen kept slightly opening and the door opposite was banging even though it was locked. It was also hard to open my door as I met with resistance then suddenly the door would open wide and I would go flying into the room.

I prefer to be inside if the wind is that strong but don't mind a little wind to blow the cobwebs away. I mean the ones in my brain!

PickAChew · 11/03/2021 07:29

It always makes me a bit spacy.

And stuff was getting thrown around a fair bit, last night. We have half the neighbourhood recycling in our front garden, this morning.

Iwantmychairback · 11/03/2021 07:30

Oh god yes, yes, yes!
It makes me so anxious. I constantly check the weather forecast to see the predicted speed.
I am so stressed, that I am really short with people and can’t even have a conversation. I hate anyone mentioning the wind to me and cut them right off! It’s constantly on my mind but I can’t talk about it.
I had earplugs in last night with the pillow wrapped around my head too, to try to block it out. I’m a bit more relaxed now as, according to the forecast, we are past the worst bit and it should be dropping soon.
No idea why I’m like this, but I wish I could change.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 11/03/2021 07:33

I like to imagine Miss Gulch flying past my window. Grin

Malin52 · 11/03/2021 07:35

@PhilCornwall1

think of a large liveable shed that is plonked ready made on a piece of land) on a cliff, on a peninsular, surrounded by the sea, very very large palm trees

Oh I am (sigh!!). Sat outside with a very large glass of something chilled and plenty more in the fridge.

Have you got room for four more people? 😀

Aw. Yea there's loads of room. I've Just come in from having a gin on the deck!

Unfortunately the NZ borders are locked down or I'd have you all here! (Well, some of you!)

Oldraver · 11/03/2021 07:39

Yes a little but I don't think it's helped by our bedroom being in the roof so very close to any noises

Plus we did once have the roof lift up and lost lots of tiles and massive ridge ones. The wind just lifted up the tiles as it ran alongst it's length, it was quite scary at the time

Oldraver · 11/03/2021 07:41

I should add though, despite how windy it is I am always surprised how little is disturbed. I've just been downstairs to see if there's any damage or stuff blown away ... but non

CookPassBabtridge · 11/03/2021 07:43

I love it, it makes me feel free! Except when it's bin night and I have images of rubbish everywhere in the street Grin

Though I used to work somewhere in Leeds that was next to a skyscraper which had created a wind tunnel when it was built.. combined with being near a river and very flat land. It was absolutely terrifying walking to work, it used to blow us all over, we had to hold onto lampposts to wait for a gust to past! Trucks used to fall over, someone got killed once.

thosetalesofunexpected · 11/03/2021 07:43

Sometimes it can be especially in the middle or early hours of the morning.

I find when hearing clanking noise outdoors for e g my garage roof is delipatered condition or any kinds of out of ordinary weird come to think of it at that time of night with windy weather is seriously unerving and gives me the creeps Heebie jeebies and makes me feel out of sorts disoriented feeling

Bicnod · 11/03/2021 07:45

I love it. I live near the sea and I love the sound of the wind whistling through the rigging on boats, it always makes me feel excited - like I'm potentially going out on the water for some extreme dinghy sailing instead of the reality of the school run...

thosetalesofunexpected · 11/03/2021 07:50

I ment to say in the middle of the night I feel like I have stumbled into a reality like show tv episode or creep panornormal /psychological investigation tv episode or been a extra on creepy type film of the kind I have described ubove.

Norwaydidnthappen · 11/03/2021 08:13

It isn’t nice to walk in it but other than that, I don’t mind it. I like listening to it outside when I’m in bed knowing I’m all cosy.

daisychained · 11/03/2021 08:14

It terrifies me. I've never considered the roof coming off!
We live near big trees and I'm always scared they will fall on the house!

ImSoMagical · 11/03/2021 08:29

I'm another one who lives in an old house and I hate the wind! We have a cupola on our roof above the bedroom which moved a couple of years ago with the wind causing loads of damage so I can't sleep when its windy. Spent last night in my spare room to avoid hearing every single creak above my head!

Fuckadoodledoooo · 11/03/2021 08:47

No I love it.

HappydaysArehere · 11/03/2021 08:57

Ever since the big wind that hit the UK in the 1980s I have been worried about strong winds. I remember going out and seeing roof damage all along the street - you could see into lofts! A tree had been blown down across the driveway so couldn’t get the car out. Everywhere trees down.
Seven Oaks didn’t have 7 oaks any more! Schools were closed and it was dangerous.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 11/03/2021 09:03

I love any kind of wet or windy weather, especially huge storms. Saying that I just moved into a house with a structurally questionable wall so strong winds do make me slightly anxious

Blueappletree · 11/03/2021 09:20

Not scared but annoyed. Stuff bashing around, keeping family up, finding something broken in the garden. But I grew up in the country with regular typhoon.

AliceSprings123 · 11/03/2021 09:21

I now live in a quite new triple-glazed bungalow, so though I could see the trees in the copse opposite going wild, that was it. No noise, nothing.Mind you, I haven't been outside yet so there might be tiles off the roof..
Pleased that the magpie's nest high up in a sapling across the way survived and that the mum is busy feeding her chicks. Bet they slept well with all the rocking they hadGrin
When we moved to the UK we bought a mobile home while we looked for a house.Mobile homes in high winds are terrifying.

Miljea · 12/03/2021 09:18

I'm not a fan of high, blustery winds, particularly at night.

I tend to think of the small animals cowering in the woods, or of homeless people coping in it.

Until very recently, I used to be on-call overnight for my HCP job, once a week, where I'd get called in for a 15 mile round trip on dark country roads, sometimes twice a night.

I hated going to bed feeling the wind jolting the house and hearing the roar in the trees in the woods across the road, knowing there was every chance I'd have to go out in it.
