I've developed a terrible habit of narrating myself through my life in the manner of an American YouTuber

Bikeley · 10/03/2021 19:35

Especially disturbing as I'm neither a youtuber, nor American. And it's not any old American accent either, it's a southern drawl. I never knew I could do one even, yet here I am doing one regularly throughout the day! Shock

I can't understand it, and it's surely only a matter of time until I'm caught in the act.

What? Like when you're making a cup of tea? Out loud?

RefuseTheLies · 10/03/2021 19:42

Come and hang out with my 5 year old. She does the same. I even heard her saying 'subscribe to my YouTube channel for more content' to herself in the mirror the other day 🤦🏻‍♀️

😂😂😂

My child does this too. She narrates and asks people (noone else in the room) to subscribe if they've loved her content. Often offers competitions to her 'followers' and has catch phrases.

She's in year 1.

Hi everybody, welcome back to my channel I hope you're all doing really really well. Today I'm going to show you this super uninteresting thing that I will waffle on about for and really long time. And every now and again I'm going to do that stupid pause and raise the pitch of my voice which makes me sound like this totally uninteresting thing is taking too long to say that I need to sigh every other sentence which is super great and fun. Please remember to like and subscribe and hit that bell button so you don't miss out on my next video about something totally uninteresting.

@RefuseTheLies I'm on my way :)

I do this when im at work, muttering to myself about what to do with this and what I'm.doing next

elsaesmeralda · 10/03/2021 19:55

My 6 year old also talks to himself as a YouTuber "don't forget to like and subscribe guys" 🤣🤣

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 10/03/2021 19:59

I understand the kids - they're both subconciously and deliberately mimicking what they see - It's totally normal.

OP, is that what you think you're doing? That's normal too, even if unusual for a grownup. I talk to myself out loud too but not in a youtuber sort of way.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/03/2021 20:09

It could be worse, it could be David Attenborough... Your sex life would be ruined forever.

Same4Walls · 10/03/2021 20:11

Do you have a baby. I do this constantly to DS. Although I also sometimes did it to the cats before he came along so I suppose I should also ask do you have a cat. Grin

hellolittlebaby · 10/03/2021 20:19

I've had my own cooking show for the past... 15 years?

I constantly narrate everything for my baby and dogs... always have for years. I catch myself doing it when they're not with me too, oops! Sometimes it's like I'm saying it in case the neighbours are listening and judging 😆 . (Yes, I know it's a bit cold out here and you should have your coat on but we'll only be out here a minute while I grab something from the garage, then I'll take you back into the warm house".

In my case, I put it down to loneliness.

hellolittlebaby · 10/03/2021 20:20

(Oh I am not a celebrity chef, I just mean when I'm cooking, it turns into my own cooking show)

TheVampiresWife · 10/03/2021 20:36

I came on to say pretty much exactly this.

In the privacy of my kitchen I'm Nigella Lawson in saggy leggings and holey old Joy Division t shirt. I even lick the spoons suggestively.

Monkeytennis97 · 10/03/2021 20:44

Like Shirley Valentine talking to the wall?

Bikeley · 10/03/2021 21:12

No babies here, they're all grown up. I used to have my own cooking show @hellolittlebaby - I don't know when or why I became a YouTuber but @LegendDairy has evidently heard me at it :)

I present country file every afternoon at around 2pm whilst walking my dog.

Slurtdragon · 10/03/2021 21:26

OP I’m guilty of such things too. Especially when I was younger, I had my own cookery show/starred on a reality tv show (is it weird this actually happened in my teens!!). Now I go through accents. I’m often Russian, Joy off My name is earl, scouse, Irish (this sometimes happens without me even knowing and DP will say why are you speaking like that). I speak With the dog it’s “oh don’t say that to mummy, that’s not very nice is it? How would you feel if I said that to you” Or “where shall we go for a walk today? The park? Tell mummy where you would like to go?” You get the jist. Nuts 🤣🤣🤣🥺🥺🥺

HappydaysArehere · 10/03/2021 23:23

I self monitor just like a child. It has got worse as I have got older. I tell myself it is second childhood. However, your Southern American drawl sounds quite interesting. Perhaps you had a former life as a Southern belle or maybe you saw a lot of films such as Gone With The Wind and your subconscious absorbed the sound because you liked it. It might be like a tune you get in your head and it keeps playing.
Love the little girl and her take on You Tube. Brilliant.

Sittinonthesand · 10/03/2021 23:28

I appreciate this isn’t the point of the thread and I’m being judge but - why would you let 5 year olds watch youtubers?

EstellaHanclay · 10/03/2021 23:44

Thank god its not just me!

FYI my four year old sometimes catches the odd youtuber because you know, older teen sibling watches them constantly.

EstellaHanclay · 10/03/2021 23:46

Mine is more of a New Yorker vibe though.

maybelou · 11/03/2021 00:05

I do this all the time, you're not alone OP! Usually in a bad Texan accent or a bad Irish accent 🙈 Gives me a spark of joy!!

I'm also VERY well prepared if I'm ever called upon to do a talk show interview about the famous TV show I've yet to be cast in 💃🏼 But for which I of course receive raving reviews Grin

TaraR2020 · 11/03/2021 00:09

Having watched The Interview the other day, I realised of all the many things that would rule me out of ever being part of the Royal Family, the one I'm least likely to overcome is my tenancy to talk aloud to myself when I'm thinking and walking. Blush

The headlines would be weird as f*
