Affordable websites to buy books

I'm a huge bookworm and am constantly buying books. I usually get them from the library, but libraries close by have been closed since Christmas. Anyway I love books and am always looking for places to buy them that aren't too expensive as generally I just read them once and then donate them or give them away.

Do they have to be real books?

Kindle app might work best and buy books off Amazon. A lot are free, some start at 99p and they are cheaper in digital format.

I've read books last year, I don't have the money or space to do that with real books.Grin 18 already this year and just started a new one.🙈

Do you have anywhere nearby that does a book swap? A couple of the smaller supermarkets near me have them. The idea is you leave a book for each one you take.

Local groups on Facebook can be a good way for people to give away or swap books.

World of books is my fav and free delivery.

Borrow for free online from your local library or order physical books to pick up from your library.

bookswap.co.uk is great

hippychick11 · 10/03/2021 17:06

@AccidentallyOnPurpose at the moment I don't have a kindle but I'm definitely thinking of buying one because it seems wasteful for me to just buy books and read them once, I also don't have a lot of space so I'll definitely look into a kindle

@LagneyandCasey my local library used to have a service where people left a book and took one. I'm going to ask around and see if there is anywhere else that does it. Great username btw, love Cagney and Lacey Grin

I don't have a kindle either. Just downloaded the app from the app store on my phone/tablet. Then you can link it with your Amazon account if you have one.

ReverendRicketyCricket · 10/03/2021 17:36

What sort of thing do you like to read?

hippychick11 · 10/03/2021 18:00

@AccidentallyOnPurpose that's wonderful thank you

Both our local coop stores have book cases where you can just donate into the little boxes on the end of the tills, you can also donate your old ones just take in and put on shelf, the money raised goes to age concern there's also one of these in one of both local tesco too but only really seen them in these 2 so try your local ones, also you could look out for a book swap box in your area or start your own perhaps ours is just a big plastic lidded box and you donate one or more and take whatever you fancy.

RoseMartha · 10/03/2021 18:13

The works usually have an offer on 3 for £5

lastqueenofscotland · 10/03/2021 18:37

Abe books is the cheapest by a mile

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 10/03/2021 18:38

BorrowBox is an app that links to your local library and you can borrow books to read on a tablet. I think it works with Kindle Fire and some other e readers, but not the ordinary Kindle. BookBub has e books for 99p and sometimes free.

bellagogosdead · 10/03/2021 18:42

The Works are good for cheap books.
I am sorry to hear your library isn't open, are you sure they aren't even doing click and collect?

MinnieMountain · 10/03/2021 18:44

eBay.

I offered some for free on my local FB page and ended up getting a load in return.

If you don't mind second hand you could look up the used books on Amazon. I had several for a lot less than even the Kindle price.

As lots of charity shops are not taking books currenlty you could see on a local Facebook group if people had a clear out.

confusedofengland · 10/03/2021 18:54

Facebook marketplace can be good for secondhand books. Also, round here lots of people leave things on their driveways for others to take.

Hopefully your libraries will start to open soon. I'm in Essex & work in libraries, we started offering click & collect services from Monday 8th March. Was really busy yesterday with people picking up orders that had arrived on the Monday.

MrsAukerman · 10/03/2021 18:54

Check out little free library.
You could start your own indeed 😊

marypoppinsreturns · 10/03/2021 19:16

I also recently discovered I could download an app and link to my local library to borrow ebooks and audio books. Great idea and no more having to remember to return the books (when the libraries eventually reopen).

LER83 · 10/03/2021 19:41

World of books, they are 2nd hand and really good. I've not used them, but I've seen a website called The Reading Tree where all books are £2.50 I believe.

SillyOldMummy · 10/03/2021 19:53

I buy books second hand
You get a rating for each book, depending doing what condition it is in, and then obviously it's priced accordingly. You can get some great bargains this way. I've had hard backs in near perfect condition for a fraction of retail price, and paperbacks just for a small amount.

It's a good way to buy books if there is something specific you want to read.

Otherwise , have you tried your local supermarket? In money there's a chariyy book swap shelf, you give 50p and take a book and then you can leave books there when you finish.

ConsuelaHammock · 10/03/2021 20:05

You can borrow ebooks from your library for free. Go onto their website and download the app they recommend . I read all of Karin Slaughter’s books this way.

ConsuelaHammock · 10/03/2021 20:06

My library use the overdrive app .
