What was the most impractical baby gift you were given?

Was just in the kids bedroom looking at a blanket DS was given shortly after he was born by a friend of my mum’s. It’s absolutely stunning. White, hand crocheted, really intricate, very fine yarn, took hundreds of hours to make. It’s also massive, heavy, and wholly impractical for use as a blanket by anyone, let alone an infant! You could probably use it as a gorgeous beach cover up or a christening shawl for photos. It’s hung on the bannisters in DS’ room for the last 2 years.

What gifts were you given that never got used?

Loads!

Same as op, a work colleague crocheted a lovely white blanket (I was her last apparently) but it was huge and so heavy! Only used for christening photos.

The most impractical were christening gufts. A silver boxed spoon. A set of silver plated useless stuff (kids beaker with a plastic sippy cup lid and silver cup, tiny useless photo frame and something else I don't remember). Also got a set with a tiny china cup and matching egg cup with bears on. When kids were small enough for a small cup I wouldn't give them a china one and by the time they could be trusted with the cup it was to small and babish 🤷🏽‍♀️

I know I sound really ungrateful.

mackerelontoast · 10/03/2021 19:02

A tiny denim skirt in newborn size 😂

Familyproblemsatwork · 10/03/2021 19:03

Oh the, "you'd never understand if you don't have children comment". Like people without children don't give and receive gifts?

Just a note parents don't have the monopoly on gift giving and receiving. I've received gifts that are not what I would necessarily buy myself but I'm grateful that the person took the time and effort to buy or make me something.

Soubriquet · 10/03/2021 19:05

No we don’t have monopoly on giving and receiving gifts but we do have experience in knowing what makes a shit gift with a brand new born...

AgathaAllAlong · 10/03/2021 19:07

I was lucky, everything we got was very practical. I was reduced to tears at being bought a size 8 pair of PJs for me one day after giving birth... hormones, tiredness and feeling huge just did me in, luckily the giver didn't see me open them. They fit now but I still get teary just looking at them!

SpiritOfEcstasy · 10/03/2021 19:08

An entire cashmere outfit 🤦🏼‍♀️ Leggings, cardigan and beanie. Dry clean only ... for a baby....

Familyproblemsatwork · 10/03/2021 19:10

How very pompous you are. It should be about being grateful that someone thought enough to want to buy you a gift in the first place (God only knows why if you're as unpleasant and condescending in real life).

I bow down to your heavenly knowledge of knowing what to buy a woman who's had a baby (like 99% of people).

Lockdownbear · 10/03/2021 19:10

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

China plates, bowls, feeding cups etc. Received several sets at both Christenings.

I'm not sure what you are actually supposed to do with them.

Use them. If they get dropped and break then at least they have been used. The alternative of them sitting in a cupboard in favour of plastic is just daft.

I have a bunnikins set that gets load of use.

Neptunesgiraffe · 10/03/2021 19:13

I was given a very expensive, designer, pale blue babygro for my son. It was beautiful. But he only wore it twice as the second time he wore it, he did one of those poos all the way up his back and it stained the babygro. It must've cost about £45 a wear.

A shamrock covered dress and matching shamrock socks for my daughter. I am Irish as are all my family...none of whom would be caught dead in it. My husband is Indian and I think Mum was trying to re dress some sort of perceived imbalance...Hmm
It went on a teddy....

Lockdownbear · 10/03/2021 19:15

@Tartyflette

A silver mini tankard (?) for DS. He's grown up now and certainly likes beer but I've never seen him use any tankard much less a small one...
Oh God I remember DS getting one of them. I've no clue what I did with it.
Seriously1996 · 10/03/2021 19:20

A hair band with a huge flower stuck on it for a baby with no hair 😳 what’s that all about 🤔

We used ours as.. well plates and bowls. Never got thrown off the highchair tray and they're much harder for a baby / toddler to accidentally knock onto the floor as they're much heavier than plastic. I was willing to risk them getting broken as I'd rather they were used and broken than never used and left in the box in the loft. But they're fine and I will use them for my grandchildren.
supersop60 · 10/03/2021 19:22

My 2 month old (born in Oct) was given a My First Christmas dress, size 9-12 months. When said to the giver that it was lovely, but too big, they said, that's ok, she can wear it next year! Um ok.

Soubriquet · 10/03/2021 19:23

And yet it’s been said on here from previous people that they had bought friends and family gifts before they had kids, received the same back and realised how much of a shit gift it was

Angelil · 10/03/2021 19:25

A Guerlain spray. For babies. For what?! Spraying their little drawers of baby clothes?! I still don’t know. I may occasionally use it on his car seat when he has been sick but that’s really it...I just can’t fathom what else you would use t for 🤷‍♀️

didireallysaythat · 10/03/2021 19:25

Set of plastic golf clubs (ages 3 and up) given to us when DS1 was 1 day old.

Stuffed toys were all immediately put in a box and given to a charity shop. Clothes (other than sleepsuits) given to a women's shelter - anything for a simple life.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 10/03/2021 19:36

Haha, I could have been as there's one other person who would have received something similar as we have DD's similar in age, however this person's nan passed away a while ago so I know it's not you😂

Our families must just have the same impractical taste!

Earthling1994 · 10/03/2021 19:36

Knitted stuff - it’s such a pain to wash that I never dressed him in it!

Also was given bottles, a snot sucker and a bumbo, all of which were never used

Lockdownbear · 10/03/2021 19:43

Baby tankard and other silver plated stuff. I'm sure the engraving on some of this must have cost as much as the actual thing.
I feel guilty at throwing this stuff out but can't actually see why my kids would want it. As I look at DHs baby cutlery in the drawerHmm
A set of generic kids puzzles in a personal box. What am I meant to do with them now?

We seem to end up with loads of stuff miles too big that fits in the wrong season, snow suits are cute but rarely used.
Even as my short kids have got bigger they end up with character clothing that have been outgrown before the garment fits.

thedevilinablackdress · 10/03/2021 19:53

Ok, this thread has been sort of helpful... So what am I to buy (imminently) bearing in mind I've never had a baby myself. Help!

starsinyourpies · 10/03/2021 19:56

@Angelil I'm always baffled in French supermarkets by the array of baby fragrances there!

Wherearemymarbles · 10/03/2021 20:01

The the most beautiful and ridiculously expensive baby grow - in pure cashmere!

IpreferInchyraBlue · 10/03/2021 20:03

A solid silver comb. Hmm
