What was the most impractical baby gift you were given?

Was just in the kids bedroom looking at a blanket DS was given shortly after he was born by a friend of my mum’s. It’s absolutely stunning. White, hand crocheted, really intricate, very fine yarn, took hundreds of hours to make. It’s also massive, heavy, and wholly impractical for use as a blanket by anyone, let alone an infant! You could probably use it as a gorgeous beach cover up or a christening shawl for photos. It’s hung on the bannisters in DS’ room for the last 2 years.

What gifts were you given that never got used?

@Lockdownbear I have my own Bunnikins bowl and mug - I turn 39 this year! Still used often Smile

I did not mean neutral expressions! Neutral can be perfectly pleasant. I mean terrifying shit like this Mickey Mouse or sparkly monstrosity.

Soft toys. So many. Take up room and not actually wanted.

Flowers. Lovely idea but our flat was like a florist after baby was born and we ran out of vases then had to deal with sorting them, watering then dealing with dead flowers when knackered with a tiny baby.

Horrible penguin. Sorry I can't fix the rotation :o

Also those "today I turned 3 months / had a shit / gurgled" cards for photos. V much not to our taste but I suppose some might like them.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/03/2021 15:13

DH's best friend bought the baby a bag of oranges..

PandemicAtTheDisco · 11/03/2021 15:18

Designer baby clothes from Harrods and the Fortnums and Mason's beanies.

I think they fit for less than 3 months. The dress was worn once for photos then swiftly removed before it got destroyed. They were really beautiful.

WhatTheActualFreshHell · 11/03/2021 15:20

I crochet but I refuse any requests for someone wanting a pure white baby blanket to gift in a fine or hand wash yarn/wool.

New mums have enough to worry about!

I will happily produce a yellow/cream/blue/whatever colour blanket in 100% non-itchy, machine washable and quick dry acrylic though 👍🏻

Most impractical thing I got was soft toys for newborns. Dust collectors.

SingingSands · 11/03/2021 15:41

A Christmas tree ornament. In May Grin

Not practical at all, but I love getting it out of the decorations box every year and hanging it on my tree. Makes me all wistful.

Kokosrieksts · 11/03/2021 16:00

I liked the baby footprint sets.

Hardly used any of the outfits up to 9 months, felt obliged to dress them up and take a picture, but that’s it.

Soft toys come handy age 2+ when pretend play starts.

I’ve given to charity a few battery operated toys, they just annoyed me too much, they were heavy, would annoy the baby when they couldn’t lift it up and it bloody hurt when they drop it. I prefer teddies 😂

Everything impractical has came from MIL

Blue patent shoes for a newborn, looked awful and were so small they didn't even fit a newborn. MIL insisted on a picture so had to try and place them on his feet for 2 minutes to get the picture
Designer clothes for a newborn they were expensive and tacky and clothes that my husband and I would have even got slagged for when we were in school so very outdated. She left the price tag on so we knew they were expensive and tbh I resold them on eBay Blush

3 balls pits, 3 packets of 100+ balls and 2 tunnels for a newborn. He's big enough to play with them now but really 1 of each would have been more than enough and having to store it for month on end was a pain. He's not even interested in them now

EmmaOvary · 11/03/2021 16:47

A relative who is well off sent two handwash only Italian wool outfits. I found out they had cost about £400. I mean they were lovely and he did wear them, but what I could have done with the money!

starsinyourpies · 13/03/2021 12:12

@EmmaOvary Italians do seem to like impractical baby clothes!

CatOfTheLand · 08/07/2021 10:14

Clothes for age 6 - that's 6 years, not 6 months - for a baby.

I have a tiny house and nowhere to store things like that

AnxiousWeirdo · 08/07/2021 11:31

Soft toys, long frilly dresses for crawling age and ofc the amazing super chav bright pink and black tracksuit for my newborn ...

Gertie75 · 08/07/2021 11:51

Clothes other than sleepsuits.
Muslin squares.
Fluffy elephant dressing up costume.

The two things I liked the most were from my parents which were matching necklace and earring sets with amethyst and aquamarines which are their birthstones. The jewellery is for me to wear and then pass them down.

Nsky · 08/07/2021 12:07

What iso difficult about washing cashmere tho, I just have laundry liqui that washes everything.
All of my gifts were pratical

Usual2usual · 08/07/2021 12:34

BIL bought newborn DS a massive supersoaker gun the size of me...... for a 3 hour old baby.

MissChanandlerBong90 · 08/07/2021 14:35

A pure white play gym from The White Company. It said ‘do not wash’ all over it. Even the mat. And I had a very very refluxy baby.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 08/07/2021 14:48

Oh yes, we got loads of things pp mentioned (although i really liked the COOK vouchers!):

Cot bumpers
snowsuit ( 0-3 months for a summer baby)
Tops with buttons up the back
100% wool blankets that can only be washed in unicorn tears
Billions of fabric bibs
Knitted booties
Record books/photo albums
Tiny jeans

Camomila · 08/07/2021 14:49

starsinyourpies I buy all my fashionable Italian relatives cheap, practical baby/toddler clothes and they are all very grateful...UV suits for the summer are a big hit!

FIL likes to buy the DC clothes but is terrible at guessing sizes - last year he got then 4 year old age 10 t-shirts that fit me, and this year he got 1 year old DS2 age 2 outfit where the shorts are so big 5 year old DS1 is wearing them.

Mumtotoomanykids · 08/07/2021 16:55

A giant 7’ teddy bear
Baby trainers
Jeans so stiff they could walk by themselves
A dress with so many frills you couldn’t see the baby

Some dickhead bought my 6th newborn baby wellies-oh yes
That was me…
