Would you pay £40 delivery for a £75 item?

Just seems madness to me. IKEA, one vanity table for dd, same dressing table everyone and their dog has atm, not a bad price at £75 but the delivery charge is astounding.
Would you factor the delivery cost in with the cost of the item, or just leave it?

It would be a birthday present if that makes any difference.

Too much IMO. But I guess it depends how much it costs to buy something equivalent elsewhere.

Notgoingonholiday · 09/03/2021 12:23

Absolutely not. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much delivery on one item. I assume there's no way you can collect? Or is IKEA not open for collection at mo?

TyneTeas · 09/03/2021 12:24

Only if the combined price was worth it and one I was willing to pay

SoundWithoutAName · 09/03/2021 12:26

No, I refuse to pay Ikea's delivery fee, it's ridiculous.

VerityWibbleWobble · 09/03/2021 12:26

No, I balked at paying £30 delivery for a £400 item from there last year.

GeoffreyGeoffreys · 09/03/2021 12:26

Have you added to your basket and put in your postcode to check? As I've found sometimes they don't actually charge that and send in a smaller van through Parcelforce for a smaller charge.

iluvpickles · 09/03/2021 12:26

Normally no but if it's still cheaper than elsewhere then probably. Another way to think of it, how much would it cost you to travel to local IKEA and back to get it. You can take that off the delivery cost.

I'd no doubt use it as an excuse to buy other stuff from IKEA lol even mugs etc.

Soubriquet · 09/03/2021 12:27

No chance

That’s a ridiculous fee

LagneyandCasey · 09/03/2021 12:27

Can't you collect it or wait until April 12th?

TitusPullo · 09/03/2021 12:30

I knew this would be IKEA, their delivery charges are ridiculous. I am also not happy about having to pay £5 to click and collect. Their delivery charges have put me off so many purchases from them, it must cost them money in the long run.

Froppysue · 09/03/2021 12:32

Glad it’s not just me thinking it’s ridiculous!

Yes that was after I put the postcode in. £40 delivery or £5 collection, but ‘local’ IKEA is absolutely miles away.

It’s dds birthday in 2 weeks and I know she would love it, but I’m contemplating writing an iou Grin

I need to replace a shelf in a pax wardrobe. It is £10 online. To click and collect will be £5!!An extra 50%!! Obviously it's non essential so it can wait, but it's a rip off!

activitythree · 09/03/2021 12:33

I would if I wanted it, yes. Otherwise I would end up with an alternative that was not my ideal.

mogtheexcellent · 09/03/2021 12:43

If its the Malm one there are plenty of similar designs available elsewhere. This from John Lewis is £99 but am sure there will be cheaper out there. Look for desks as well as vanity/dressing tables.

TheHamsterCatcher · 09/03/2021 12:44

I'd pay that for delivery if it was an item that needed special care during delivery. Something especially fragile or that needed a specialist to move.

Not for a single item of flat pack furniture that I didn't desperately need. No way.

JingsMahBucket · 09/03/2021 12:46

@Froppysue can you go collect it? If not you, can family with a car collect it?

BarbaraofSeville · 09/03/2021 12:48

Ikea's delivery costs reflect the price of delivering the item. I've paid that amount to have large items delivered and I live less than 2 miles from the shop because that's the only way. If you start to look at other shops that don't charge for delivery, the products are far more expensive, because delivery is priced into every item.

Their furniture is priced on you walking into their warehouse and picking the item up yourself. If you want it bringing to your front door, you have to pay for the additional service.

OP, you don't want to collect the item yourself, because it's not worth your time and money, but you don't want to pay Ikea to deliver either? They'd rather not sell you the dressing table, than sell it to you at a loss because it costs them money to bring it to you.

Would it make you feel better if the dressing table was £115 with free delivery? What difference would it make if that was how it was priced?

lottiegarbanzo · 09/03/2021 12:48

Depends if I thought it was worth the total amount. e.g. If it was an Ebay bargain, it might work out well.

Roselilly36 · 09/03/2021 12:48

No way, absolutely crazy delivery charge, imagine the profit they are making on that.

Puzzledtenant · 09/03/2021 12:49

To be fair, that covers ordering as much as you want though, it's just unfortunate if you only need one thing and it might make it cheaper to go elsewhere but I don't think it's unreasonable when you could potentially order £2k of stuff for that £40 delivery. I quite like that they charge that for delivery and don't build it in to the cost of the furniture, everyone else charges for delivery but adds any extra info the product costs which seems unfair. Means you're not paying almost the same to go and buy it in store (when covid isn't an issue) as to have it delivered.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 09/03/2021 12:51

I've paid for IKEA delivery a few times. It would cost us nearly that in petrol to drive there and we don't have to actually go in the shop which is a bonus.

Pinklittle · 09/03/2021 12:53

Nope, we currently have an order outstanding with them which we have paid the £40 delivery charge and this morning they have once again pushed the delivery date back another 3 weeks!!! You can sometimes buy through Amazon some of the IKEA products maybe have a look there?

TitusPullo · 09/03/2021 12:54

I love really close to an IKEA but don’t have a huge car. They used to charge less depending on how close you lived so it only used to cost £17, I think that’s why I’m even more annoyed at the blanket £40 charge

TitusPullo · 09/03/2021 12:54

*live! Although I guess I do also love close to an IKEA Grin

UltimateBlends · 09/03/2021 12:55

I factor in delivery cost to an item:

Eg. Jeans from ebay. Win auction at £7, p&p is £4, jeans = £11

Are they still a bargain at £11? Do I still love them if I paid £11, say in a shop.

If the answer is yes, I go for it. If it is no, I dont.

Apply this rule to everything.

Is the item worth the total to you/your daughter? If yes, then you can justify it.
If no, then look elsewhere.
