Would you pay £40 delivery for a £75 item?

Just seems madness to me. IKEA, one vanity table for dd, same dressing table everyone and their dog has atm, not a bad price at £75 but the delivery charge is astounding.
Would you factor the delivery cost in with the cost of the item, or just leave it?

It would be a birthday present if that makes any difference.

@Roselilly36

No way, absolutely crazy delivery charge, imagine the profit they are making on that.

The profit?

Do some basic maths and work it out then? I would be interested to see what you come up with.

The cost to hire/buy a van. Tax and insurance. Fuel. Manpower involved in getting your item to you. That's not just the delivery persons wage; your order needs to be received, processed, picked etc.

As @BarbaraofSeville said, the reason other companies offer lower/free delivery is because there is a cost built in to every piece they sell to cover delivery across the board.

Yeah I suppose very true, I wouldn’t be as annoyed if I ordered a few hundred pounds worth of stuff for £40 delivery, or if it was £115 with free delivery.

Dd has her heart set on this one, and I like the fact it comes with a glass top too so I’m going to suck it up and pay it. I might ask around a few friends and see if they want anything delivered to share the delivery cost though.

Getting to an IKEA would probably cost as much, plus it’s not an essential journey atm and would run the risk of being fined. I found a guy who does IKEA pick ups - for £40 😂

Absolutely not, but then I'm currently very annoyed about the John Lewis £2 collection charge so what do I know haha!

We have a neighbour WhatsApp group. Whenever someone wants an IKEA order, everyone else does too so we all chip in for delivery. Works quite well if there is a couple of you willing to split it.

I also factor in my time if I have to collect something. Plus fuel and parking.

I did, IKEA bookcase for DD.

It wasn't available to pick up, but tbh it wouldn't have fitted in our car. Also it, was so heavy it would have been a mare

The delivery chap said they delivered a lot of them. It saved me time and petrol and frankly borrowing someone's estate car so it was worth it imo.

If this was me I would wait until you are allowed to pick it up and use the delivery charge you have saved on a present she can open on her birthday. I'd feel like I'd used my money better that way!

IKEA actively do not want you to opt for delivery.

Their business model is lots of customers coming to their stores for that £75 dressing table, picking up impulse buys as they walk through the store, and then serving themselves from the warehouse, the stopping for meatballs and Daim cookies to get over the trauma.

They do not want you to order 1 item they have to pick from the warehouse and put on a truck and pay a delivery driver and have to deal with logistics of when the delivery is scheduled to the customer and the extra infrastructure of customer service all the while losing out on extra impulse buy sales a d cafe custom.

It’s designed to put you off! I’m always amazed people don’t understand that.

Definitely ask around, I've just placed an order for some smaller bits and asked several friends and we are sharing the click and collect cost as we live ten minutes from IKEA. If it was more I would have just paid but my own order is only about £12 so £5 extra on top of that is a lot, £1.50 isnt. Everyone always needs something from IKEA!
Weirdnessabounds · 09/03/2021 13:37

My relative delivers IKEA goods, as PP say IKEA is not making a profit on delivery costs.
IKEA does not have its own drivers and vans so deliveries are contracted out, so contract company needs to cover its costs, for furniture deliveries 2 workers are required and a big van, so wages and transport costs need to be covered. It’s not like Tesco deliveries where many people in the same street/ area will be getting deliveries on the same day. People don’t tend to order furniture often so deliveries are often miles apart which also limits how many deliveries an be made in a day from one van, especially if some orders are for whole kitchens or multiple beds / bookcases/ sofas etc.
Surely people look at the total cost

Cheaper item plus costly delivery versus
More costly item plus cheaper delivery

Buy or don’t buy from IKEA nobody is making you buy from them.

MrsDThomas · 09/03/2021 13:51

Its a ridiculous price. But I usually share delivery with a friend who often buys from there,

Do you have anyone to share it with?
