Question for contact lens wearers

BabbleBee · 08/03/2021 20:32

I’ve recently started wearing contacts, I’ve got Oasys Torics. Had the trial lenses and all was well. I can put them in / take them out with no problem.

I bought 2 week lenses, same as the trial ones. The first couple of pairs were OK and then I had one which was fine when I put it in, but then felt like I had gunk in my eye and it was cloudy on and off. I took it out and there was a scuff mark on the lens. Couldn’t work it out at all, I hadn’t had anything in my eye and hadn’t dropped or damaged it before I put it in. The same thing happened with the next lenses so I contacted the optician and they’ve replaced them in case it was a faulty batch.

I’ve tried a new one today and within a couple of hours exactly the same thing has happened. It definitely wasn’t damaged before I put it in. It went in first time so I can’t have done anything to it.

So wtf am I doing wrong? How do I manage to scuff the lens while I’m wearing it?! I’ll try another tomorrow to see if it happens yet again, but in the meantime any ideas??

I’ve never scuffed a lens in all the years of wearing them so it seems odd. I used to teach people to put CL’s in when I worked in an opticians and I really don’t recall hearing that ever happen. Rip or tear maybe but not a scuff. Is it white/discoloured or a little clear bit or something?

Are you putting them in before putting makeup on or after moisturiser? Any chance you’ve got something on your finger before putting them in?

When you felt it was cloudy and had gunk in your eye, after taking it out and looking at it, did you attempt to clean it and put it back in? I can sometimes see a cloudy bit if I take it out to look for an eyelash or something but it’s usually a pool of tears on the lens before cleaning it.

Sometimes the torics can spin round so aren’t aligned correctly and that can cause it to blur but if you pop your finger on the edge of your lens you can spin it round slightly until it sits correctly. Did the opticians examine the lenses in your eye before replacing them? If not they need to do that tbh to see what the issue is.

BabbleBee · 08/03/2021 21:04

I’ve tried both with and without make up. Doesn’t seem to make a difference.

I didn’t have any gunk in my eye, but my vision was the same as when you do.

Scuff is the only way I can describe it - like a graze? I’m aware of the movement of the lens, because the cloudy vision comes and goes. Today it was fine looking down but looking forward it was cloudy.

I guess it’ll be another phone call to the optician... glad I’m not the only one baffled!

I've no advice but I've been wearing contacts for years and never experienced that! Definitely speak to the optician again.

I’ve been wearing toric lenses for years and have never scuffed one. I’ve torn a few but usually due to a jagged nail or something

I’d be inclined to go back to the optician to check you’re not doing something when you put them in (can’t think what). Mine have a line that needs to sit at the top of my eye which aligns them correctly but I can’t think that would be like a scuff mark

aspringdaffodil · 08/03/2021 21:10

I've been wearing lenses for years and don't think I've experienced this. The only similar things I can think of is sometimes I will also get a cloudy lens if I'm not rinsed off all the soap residue on my hands. I now make it a point to rinse my hands for a lot longer and ensure all soap residue is off my hands. Also when I wear mine inside out sometimes they feel comfortable and fine but when I blink the lens shifts and my vision goes blurry, but that doesn't cause a scuff as you've described so I'm not sure.

BabbleBee · 08/03/2021 21:12

That’s what I can’t work out. If I was dropping it, folding it over or something to damage the lens I’d get it. I’m scooping it out of the container with my finger tip, balancing it on the tip of my finger and it goes straight in. I have short nails. It doesn’t go cloudy for a couple of hours.

This confirms I’m weird, right?! Grin

This might sound stupid, but are they inside out?!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 08/03/2021 21:13

I wonder if the fit is not as good as should be and that is making them move and brush against part of your eye? I've worn monthly disposables for years and the only issue I've ever had has been the occasional tear or tiny piece broken off the rim.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 08/03/2021 21:14

Although the cloudiness also sounds like your eyes/contacts are drying out...

MummytoCSJH · 08/03/2021 21:14

Sorry if I missed this but is it in both eyes? I was wondering if you have a bit of skin or something inside your eyelid that could be rubbing against them?

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/03/2021 21:17

My guess is inside out or you have a bit of protein buildup that needs a bit better cleaning.

I've worn contact lenses of some type for over 30 years. I'm currently wearing toric varifocal monthlies.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/03/2021 21:22

In the olden days, before disposables, I remember having to "protein clean" my lenses regularly - proteins and lipids from tears build up in the lenses. I wonder if your tears are high in something or other and that's causing this? Hopefully your optician will have some idea.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/03/2021 21:25

How are your toric varifocals, @WaxOnFeckOff? My optician isn't recommending them, I'm still on one underpowered eye for reading, but I am loving my varifocal glasses.

I have toric lenses in both eyes now but for over 15 years I had 'normal' lenses. I occasionally have issues with my topics that I never had before as I sometimes have a lens that is blurry and doesn't sit right. After trying to move it in my end, if that doesn't help I take it out, clean it and pop it back in. This normally solves it.
If you are having lots of problems I think you should go back to the optician for a check up. I think you may need them to review the curvature of your eye to check you're having the right lenses prescribed.
Good luck

I love them, I've been wearing them for about 5 years. I have them optimised for computer work so my long vision is not as perfect as it could be but it's perfectly acceptable.

I've never worn varifocal glasses, don't your eyes get confused when switching from one method to the other.

First time I tried the lenses, they made me really dizzy and nauseous for the first few minutes, your eye gets used to them very quickly though.

jendifer · 08/03/2021 21:38

I came to ask if it’s inside out too

Happinessisawarmcervix · 08/03/2021 21:43

Is there a different brand you can try? I had a similar issue and a switch of brands solved it. It was something about proteins in my tears interacting badly with the fluids and making the lens cloud up. Not sure of the exact description, sorry!

Inclinedtochatter · 08/03/2021 21:45

Does your eye feel dry or gritty without the lens in? I'm wondering if you have a dry patch or something on the inside of your eyelid that's causing the lens to scuff.

BabbleBee · 08/03/2021 21:53

I’m pretty sure they’re not but I’ll double check

I’ve thought along those lines, that there’s got to be something in or on my eye damaging the lens.

@PamDemic

Is it that they are drying out?

I'm currently trying out varifocal lenses and one of the types I've tried gets drier quicker than the others and then my vision is impacted.

I don’t think so but I can use some comfort drops to see if it stops it happening

I’m happy to keep trying with different brands. I’m a nurse and work life is so much easier without glasses!

Is it the same eye each time?
Eye infection?
Have you tried putting comfort drops in when this happens?
Have you tried taking lens out and cleaning it then reinserting?

Only when I’m very tired
