Question for contact lens wearers

I’ve recently started wearing contacts, I’ve got Oasys Torics. Had the trial lenses and all was well. I can put them in / take them out with no problem.

I bought 2 week lenses, same as the trial ones. The first couple of pairs were OK and then I had one which was fine when I put it in, but then felt like I had gunk in my eye and it was cloudy on and off. I took it out and there was a scuff mark on the lens. Couldn’t work it out at all, I hadn’t had anything in my eye and hadn’t dropped or damaged it before I put it in. The same thing happened with the next lenses so I contacted the optician and they’ve replaced them in case it was a faulty batch.

I’ve tried a new one today and within a couple of hours exactly the same thing has happened. It definitely wasn’t damaged before I put it in. It went in first time so I can’t have done anything to it.

So wtf am I doing wrong? How do I manage to scuff the lens while I’m wearing it?! I’ll try another tomorrow to see if it happens yet again, but in the meantime any ideas??

I had similar problems with Accuview torics but I switched to Biofinity torics and I have had no problems for about 12 years.

@Dcadmam001

Is it the same eye each time? Eye infection? Have you tried putting comfort drops in when this happens? Have you tried taking lens out and cleaning it then reinserting?
It’s either / or / both! Unpredictable.

I would definitely think about daily lenses. They're thinner so your eye can breathe more, and of course easier!

If you have 2 week lenses could it be the cleaner? Have you changed it?
I have worn Hard/Gas Permeable for nealy 50 years with few problems but managed to scuff a pair of lenses when I used a different cleaner.

I’m using the same one as I got from the optician. I’ll try another and see if that makes a difference.

Please speak to your optician before doing anything else!

78percentLindt · 09/03/2021 09:16

@BabbleBee
Please don't change your cleaner at my suggestion. I thought you might have done so already.
I checked the formula of the one I changed to carefully, Iworked in medicines formulation at one time and I still got caught by the different one which I had previously used about 10 years ago.
Speak to your optician.

ScottishStottie · 09/03/2021 09:20

Might be obvious but whenn you take it out and see the scuff, are you attempting to clean it?

I sometimes get this if eye gunk gets caught on the lens, it looks like a scuff but a squirt of cleaner sorts it out.

I would also reccomend trying different solutions.

I used one for years and years, then my optition changed their brand that they used. New one gave me headaches and affected my ability to focus and caused blurry vision.

Optician was adamant that there was no way the solution could cause this, and that different brands are the same thing, but i bought a bottle of the original stuff and all the issues went away. Not sure how or why, but it defo made a difference

I've been wearing lenses now for about 10 years and this happened to me when I went on holiday and decided to switch from daily to monthly. I stopped using them and reverted back to daily lenses. Never happened again. They seemed to be drying my eyes out and I was having to use eye drops every now and again to keep them moist which made the cloudiness disappear.

Thanks for all the tips and advice. Once DD is back at school next week I’ll make an appointment to see optician. I won’t make any drastic changes until then. It’s very annoying though, it’s so much easier at work without glasses on but I really need to be able to see what I’m doing!

Boring update...

@WaxOnFeckOff was right, it’s a protein build up rather than a scuff. It’s been solved by wearing dailies and rinsing off the solution they come in with a different solution!

That's fab that you have got it sorted OP (it's Wax here with a name change). Some people are just more susceptible to protein build up. Pre disposables, my sister used to have to soak hers every night in a special solution to remove protein. It was fascinating as you could see strands of it floating in the solution. I wore the same type of lenses and same solutions but only rarely had to do a protein removal.

I wear monthlies and just occasionally have to give them an extra rub, usually just towards the end of the month or if I've napped in them (or been crying a lot!)
