Hoax hmrc calls-multiple calls a day from different numbers

Aghh it’s driving me mad.
At least 2 calls a day with an automated message saying owe some money or whatever (I never really listen now after the first few). I block the numbers as they come but they are all from different mobile numbers.
Is there any way to stop them?

I had one this morning! Mobile number called and I answered and it was an automated message saying there was a warrant out for my arrest because of tax evasion! It made me laugh it was so ludicrous. If you figure out how to stop them let me know!!

MedusasBadHairDay · 08/03/2021 11:53

I feel like there's more spam calls than usual at the moment, already had two in the landline this morning.

bonfireheart · 08/03/2021 11:53

These are really annoying me, keep blocking them and they just come from a different number.

Liquorishtoffee · 08/03/2021 11:59

These are driving me nuts. Always a bloody mobile number - and these never come up on searched because I suppose they have fancy software the lies about the number or they have a zillion throwaway numbers at their disposal.

One of these days I will invent my ‘zap a caller’ phone function that delivers a million volts to the (scan) caller at the press of a button. (My idea, no nicking it)

coldwarenigma · 08/03/2021 12:02

5 this morning, all automated, at least when its a human I can have a bit of fun and wind them up!

Freshprincess · 08/03/2021 12:04

Ive got a police warrant out for my arrest because of tax evasion too! Taking their time to get to me, considering HMRC know where I live.

I don’t answer the phone if I don’t know who it is, as I think sometimes they do a test call to check it’s a real number. Not sure how well that works as I do still get them.

Not sure if there is any real way to stop them.

Liquorishtoffee · 08/03/2021 12:17

Sadly it means that when someone I don’t know does call legitimately they get ‘yessssssssss????’

VettiyaIruken · 08/03/2021 12:19

I've got call guardian or whatever it's called. People have to say who they are then the recording of them saying it is let through and I can choose to accept or reject.
It's bt but I bet other providers do something similar.

KatherineJaneway · 08/03/2021 12:21

If you pick up and answer they know this so bombard you with calls. Nest not to answer the phone.

Seeline · 08/03/2021 12:21

We've just got call guardian too. DH is fed up after a year WFH of all the ridiculous calls. It's stopped about 20 interruptions in the last week.

I don't know if there is something similar for mobiles though?

Liquorishtoffee · 08/03/2021 12:22

That sounds good! Is there also an option that if you press the reject button they get a million volt shock?
goose1964 · 08/03/2021 12:23

We have sky shield on our landline, we get no calls. I'm rotten at answering my mobile, only really use is as a messenger thing so I think my mobile's on a not active list the scammers have.

SoCrimeaRiver · 08/03/2021 12:27

We had this with calls "from TalkTalk" to our landline, strong overseas accent. We couldn't block them because the number kept changing. In the end we changed our phone number as we had, I think, 20 in an hour one day, and DD was a small baby and was woken by the bl**dy phone repeatedly so some random doing one of these calls got both barrels from a very sleep deprived mother who then hung up on them, then we contacted our phone provider and got the number changed.

Gardenvisits · 08/03/2021 12:27

We don’t have a landline.
Maybe I could change my answer phone message and ask people to text or leave a message instead of answering the phone?

You can't ignore the phone though if you're expecting legitimate calls, from school / elderly family etc.

Liquorishtoffee · 08/03/2021 12:31

That’s the thing - when you have kids you do need to answer the phone (especially when they are little and at school). You never know when they have fallen into a dustbin and has to have stitches... - yes he did)

Walkacrossthesand · 08/03/2021 12:37

Someone on here said that you can tell your iPhone not to ring for a number that's not in your contacts - it's in settings, I did it and now I just get a notification that I missed a call from X number. Interestingly, the last few have all been from a number identical to my own except for the last 3 digits. Supposed to make you think it's someone like you, apparently? 🤷‍♀️

justjuggling · 08/03/2021 13:56

I’ve had 2 from ‘HMRC’ already today. Going to look at the shield/guardian type options.

Nicolastuffedone · 08/03/2021 14:50

I never answer calls from an unknown number, they’ll leave a message if it’s important. I only answer ‘withheld’ numbers if I’m expecting gp/hospital to call.

doctorhamster · 08/03/2021 14:52

I'm about to be attested for tax evasion too Hmm I had 3 calls yesterday from different mobile numbers but nothing today yet.

Mydogisagentleman · 08/03/2021 14:57

I’m being arrested as well.
Mine wasnt a machine it was a real life person.
He told me that the police were on their way. I asked him where they were being sent to as I was leaving work in the next hour.
He said it’s classified

TrojaninTroy · 08/03/2021 15:12

Although the numbers may appear to be different, they are generated by a computer, and are all coming from one central number.

WriteHon · 08/03/2021 16:48

For landlines, a call-blocking phone is an excellent investment.

You have to input your own directory of numbers that can come straight through, but there is an option for people to announce themselves or leave a message if you can't answer.

The robo calls never leave an answer, and unless you look at your incoming calls list, you don't even know they've tried to phone you.

Well worth the effort of buying and setting it up (although I occasionally miss the days when you got a real person on the phone and you could bait them.)

StandardPoodle · 08/03/2021 18:23

I'm about to be arrested too. And we're getting a couple of calls a day from Amazon - apparently I have an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 11 on the way.

MrsJackRackham · 08/03/2021 18:30

Oh @Walkacrossthesand me too.
Strange that my tax is in such arrears that I'm about to be arrested. You'd think they'd just deduct it from my wage...from HMRC Hmm
