Examples of "niche" jobs

Everyone on MN seems to work in a very niche job that very few people could actually do. Earning lots of money of course. But they can never say what this job is as that would be very outing Hmm

So out of curiosity, can someone please list a few of these niche jobs?

The only person I know with a niche job does art restoration, but she's no high earner from it!
Literally everyone I know does ordinary jobs like teaching, medicine, law, nursing, working for the council, NHS. I don't know many people with niche jobs!

I used to be a (very) junior specialist at an auction house before i lost my job after the 2008 crash. That was pretty niche, although I certainly didn't make big bucks from it. I worked in a gallery and in an archive for a bit after that, but I wouldn't call either of those niche exactly. Flogging Warhols does require a certain skill set, it's not that different from selling Rolexes or Cartier bracelets.

Most niche jobs of people I know
Deep sea cartographer

Stained glass window maker

Author, I suppose it’s not super niche but the amount of people that attempt to publish compared to people who can make a decent living from being published is vast

People that work in drug development, one has patented a drug delivery system

I really want to say Transponster, may be too late as not properly RTFT Grin

I deal in antiques and the particular area where I specialise is pretty niche with very little written about it. Many people deal in antiques and have a good general knowledge of the trade but there are some very specialised areas with a few people who are acknowledged expert dealers and restorers.

For example I know an elderly man who restores antique grandfather clocks and he has a two year waiting list!

Ooh hello fellow radiographers 🖐️. Love how the career can take us on such different paths.

That's interesting Miljea, maybe after a few years experience I'll be onto a good wage.

It was suggested upthread that people who work with thatched roofs might be quite unusual. Not in Dorset, they're not, ten a penny round here!

I read an article on BBC website this morning about climate change, apparently shipping is affected hugely by the suctioning on of shellfish under boats which means they use 25% more diesel than they could.

People are investigating this. The job title?

Barnacle Psychologist

Patent Attorney. The person who does the legal stuff for new patents. I am not one but know someone who is. Quite a niche area I am told.

DH has two friends whose jobs are niche in software. When they are in work they earn A LOT. But one is often out of work.

United Nations midwife? I know a girl who did this for the UN/WHO and worked in all kinds of conflict/war zones and humanitarian disasters. I would describe that as niche. A certain emotional skill set, geopolitical knowledge and to be a communication genius. As well as a skilled midwife. She was always the centre of attention at dinner parties

Notary? I was looking for one the other day and there only seem to be 2 in my medium size city.

I know a rocket scientist, he probably has a proper title though, a few niche experts in matters of archaeology and some specialists for various types of antiques. Not sure if any would earn £200k though.
I do something not at all unusual and quite low paid.

Smelborp · 03/05/2021 15:22

I had a job that only a small number of other people in the world had.

To give a comparison think of something like a diplomat/liaison with a specialism subject and working with a specific well known organisation like the UN or The White House.

Other people could certainly have done it but to say what it was would be outing.

TheChosenTwo · 03/05/2021 19:35

My job isn’t niche but I’m the only person who can do it where I work and I’ve never met anyone else who can do it!
That’s not to say that no one else could learn, anyone could, I’m not irreplaceable but they’ve paid me more to keep me when I mentioned that I was looking for other jobs which leads me to believe there aren’t many spare ‘me’s!
