Examples of "niche" jobs

Everyone on MN seems to work in a very niche job that very few people could actually do. Earning lots of money of course. But they can never say what this job is as that would be very outing Hmm

So out of curiosity, can someone please list a few of these niche jobs?

A friend of a friend worked as a deep sea diver working on oil rigs so if there was an issue with the pipes he would fix it

This was a real attraction to women and I don’t think it was because of the money (to look at him you wouldn’t think he had a manual job never kin one so risky)

He would fly out all over the world. I think just having a job that is interesting makes people interested in you
@AllThatIAmRoom101 doh, cows, obviously! I don't know how that slipped through!
Damn!! I thought hubby was going to be having our next one so he can feel just how painful it is, as thought if it was possible in bulls it's very possible in humans of the male species 🤣😂

AllThatIAmRoom101 · 08/03/2021 20:01

I'm a firearms ballastic's specialist. Well paid but I'm not sure its niche?! I do love it though

Mine's pretty niche, hence the name change...

A specialised form of diplomacy. There are fewer than 100 of us within the country, and if you narrowed it down to country and subject specialisms within that, you'd be pointing the finger at a maximum of 2 people.

Well paid? It's all relative. Higher pay than being a shop assistant, or nurse. But given the amount of education and expertise required it's low compared to equivalent professions like law or medicine. If we decided to use our skills for corporates, we'd be a lot richer.

Potato Sexer. Very niche.

springdale1 · 08/03/2021 20:22

I don’t think artificial bull semen inseminators are as niche as you would think! There are a lot of livestock in this country and it’s big money

VK456 · 08/03/2021 20:39

I know a chicken sexier!

VK456 · 08/03/2021 20:39

Sexer that should say!!

A roof thatcher would be niche I think. I'm not one but I think there are apprenticeships available for young people in this, and other traditional craft-type jobs, which have a danger of dying out. I heard the other day that it costs about £30k to re-thatch a medium sized cottage and I think it lasts about 25 years. I have no idea what the average annual salary would be or how regularly work would be available. Or his much raw materials would cost for that matter. I'm too old to contemplate it now but I'm not afraid of heights and I think it would be satisfying work.

An expert in ferns and moses?! This sounds like the most serene job in the world!

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 08/03/2021 21:29

I also know people who are professional looky-likeys of historical figures and/or portray people from historical periods which used to cause confusion when the kids were little and went to school talking about their friend Henry VIII's son or the little Victorian girl they were playing with at the weekend. Regular school staff know we are reenactors but a supply teacher thought my son was playing with ghosts (she wasn't too sure if they were actual ghosts or imaginary friends).

We had a visit from a dendrochronologist once. He told us there are only eight of them working in the UK, so I guess that’s pretty niche?

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 08/03/2021 21:46

My role used to be quite niche but there’s loads of us around now. DPO. It’s geeky but I like it!

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 08/03/2021 22:03

@BrendaWindsor

I'm the only person in the UK who does my job and I've been doing it for nearly 70 years
Ooh - can you name change and tell us?!
Spina · 08/03/2021 22:21

😉 Hope you’re not watching the telly tonight !

B1rdflyinghigh · 08/03/2021 22:22

I have a friend who is an expert in mushroom growing and travels around the world educating others.

The only truly "niche" job I have run across in the past 1-3 years was an advertisement for a position as caretaker for five cats on a private island, and the applicant hired was free to bring his/her own cats along.

Now, there is a niche I could fall into!

grassisjeweled · 09/03/2021 02:08

Dry stone waller is pretty niche these days

ElleMac44 · 09/03/2021 02:23

I'm not sure what a niche job is? Is it something not many people do? Or something that requires a special skill set?
My sister in law was a Cartographer many years ago in the RAF and could tell you where underground bunkers and bombs were in other countries. As for not admitting what you do, if I was working for MI5/6 i wouldn't admit that to just anyone and certainly not on MN. I used to work for an ex Prime Minister and i am bound by law not to talk about anything i heard, saw or was privy too till the day i die. I'm sure there are others in that position now that cannot talk for security reasons. I'd say they had niche jobs.

mindutopia · 09/03/2021 07:21

I do clinical research on a specific viral disease. There are only a handful of research centres around the UK who do this sort of research. None near me, so I have a long commute into London part of the week in normal times. Otherwise I’d have to move and we like where we live.

In my previous profession I worked on Death Row Appeals to the Privy Council.

Afterwards I took a postgraduate degree that is the only one of its kind in Britain, with an intake of fewer than ten students per year. Fewer than five in my specific area. (I still enjoy saying I came top of my year. BlushGrin)

(Have NC but still feel the need to be vague.)

Fleetress · 09/03/2021 08:42

The funny thing is, anyone can take up my second occupation, without formal qualifications, if you possess a modicum of talent and can get the right people to trust you. But most people simply don't realise the occupation exists. It is immense fun.

ChangeNameagain2 · 09/03/2021 08:42

Name changed for this. I think I have a random job. I am a clinical perfusion scientist. I work in the NHS and I'd say most people in the NHS wouldn't even know we existed. I would hazard a guess that 1, possibly 2 other posters on here are also perfusionists by their descriptions. No one will get a post unless someone dies or retires as usually once your in, your in due to the specific post grad training needed.
