Everyone knows schools won't actually look like this, don't they?

I'll begin by saying I'm a primary school teacher and am happy schools are opening. My own 2 DC are really excited to be going back. This picture is in The Times today, with an almost identical one in The Sun, apparently.

I'd just like to know if the majority of parents know that this image is about as far from reality as it's possible to be for most schools?

Let’s hope it’s nothing like those pictures

AlexaShutUp · 07/03/2021 10:43

Haha, yes. I am well aware that they look nothing like this. I don't anticipate that there will be any social distancing in my dd's secondary school, and I doubt that there will be full compliance with mask wearing. A lot of people won't have opted into the lateral flow testing. I hope that the most vulnerable teachers will have been vaccinated, but I worry for staff safety and about kids passing covid onto parents and other family members.

My dd really wants to be back in school, and I'm pleased that she'll be able to see her friends and her teachers again, but I am under no illusion that schools are "covid safe". Clearly, they are not. Cases are still relatively high in my area too.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 07/03/2021 10:45

Yes, I know. Children are bad at social distancing, they luck things, they hug their friends, they eat stuff they found in a sand pit. Keeping them totally germ free would be harder than herding cats and no reasonable parent would expect it.
My DD is in secondary now. Her school did their best to keep the kids contained to their year group outside and form group inside. They had the same seating plan for every lesson so it would be easier to track closest contacts. They did ask for masks to be worn in class before Christmas, when the figures were getting scary, but they didn't rigourously enforce and loads of kids weren't really wearing them properly because it's uncomfortable all day. They had staggered arrival and meal times. They did their best and I'm grateful for their efforts. I wouldn't expect more than they've done.

I really bloody hope they don't look like this.

wonkylegs · 07/03/2021 10:46

'Might' is doing some heavy lifting on those captions
Ha I think anyone who has ever been in a school in the U.K. knows that it's not going to be like that
I think most schools are trying to do the best they can with limited resources and space which we know they can't just magic up out of thin air or for a fiver no matter what the government seems to think.

Radio4Rocks · 07/03/2021 10:48

They should but where will the money to pay for it come from?

noblegiraffe · 07/03/2021 10:51

2/3 of the class are missing. Where are they?

Parentpower20 · 07/03/2021 10:51

I’m very glad it’s nothing like this pictures! Looks awful.

I do wish school classrooms were twice the size. Mine are in a typical older school which frankly can only comfortably fit 15 children even without social distancing.
More space in classrooms would make it much safer in the (long term) future but that requires large investment from government which so far hasn’t been forthcoming.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/03/2021 10:53

Unless they've somehow doubled the classroom size... No. I know full well my children will be sitting in rows, inches away from their friends.
I also know the skylights and windows will be open, but the blinds will likely be shut so they can actually see the board.
They have a sink in the classroom, as it's a modern building.

But I highly doubt to see stuff like perspex screens.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/03/2021 10:53

My tables are ready in their rows with the pencil pots all tidy, won't stay that way for long! Oh I love the moveable partition screens that block the view of the teacher and the whiteboard.

Oh and I would love a sink that worked by a button that is pushed by your knee!!! Would last about five minutes I think!

And another and the last I promise oh, my windows and doors have been open full time since September!

noblegiraffe · 07/03/2021 10:54

I note the teacher doesn’t have a chair. Good stuff.

noblegiraffe · 07/03/2021 11:02

The Sun gives the teacher a chair.

Different versions of the same bullshit, where have they got this from?!

Everyone knows schools won't actually look like this, don't they?
Pieceofpurplesky · 07/03/2021 11:07

Wow do some people believe this shit? My classroom has no changes, just the windows open and masks. 32 kids in a small room no social distance at all

AlexaShutUp · 07/03/2021 11:09

Wow do some people believe this shit?

Don't know, but I'd like to know why the media are complicit in promoting this shit.

badlydrawnbear · 07/03/2021 11:10

I expect DCs' primary classroom to be exactly as it was in September with no social distancing within the year group because there isn't space and because it is impossible with 5 year olds. They will all be sitting face the front rather than facing each other and the windows will be open but they seem to have got used to the cold, but that is all. I am not sure that there is any point in the movable screen in the pictures, because surely virus particles can pass over the top and round the sides? I am still expecting DC at home for 2 week isolation like last term, but hoping they are in school for longer than 2 weeks which is how long DC1 was back in September before being home as a contact.

Snorlaxx · 07/03/2021 11:16

Load of shite. To be honset I cant see how packing classrooms full of even more obstacles would be any help even if it was possible - to me this just looks like more surfaces to sanitise and less space to pass each other between partitions.

If they think measures like this are necessary they'd be far better going back to staggered classes where its easier to keep a bit of space between people.

peak2021 · 07/03/2021 11:20

So the press have fallen for something planted by Gavin Williamson or one of his team?

I hope most people can see through this, but then again, some people believe the anti-vaxxer theories.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/03/2021 11:37

The teacher in the Sun seems to have a chalkboard to write on too!!! Sounds about right for their level of knowledge of modern classrooms!

Magnificentmug12 · 07/03/2021 11:39

I’m glad it isn’t going to be like that in reality- looks depressing!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/03/2021 11:41

In the second diagram they all have laptops, but only some of them in the first diagram...

noblegiraffe · 07/03/2021 11:46

They can't be laptops, look at the size of them. Maybe they're those little electronic dictionaries. Shouldn't really need them in a maths lesson though.

Retrievemysanity · 07/03/2021 11:49

It was in yesterday’s Times too. I think most people would realise it doesn’t reflect reality! Bizarre times we are living in.

otherwise they are very similar to that!

And another 20 kids but in the same sized room, you mean?

WrongKindOfFace · 07/03/2021 11:56

Unless they’ve magically extended every classroom since Christmas it definitely won’t be like that in (almost) any school.
