Keratosis pilaris - any tips?

I’ve had this most of my life (now 50) and I’m tired of it. Bumpy, lumpy unattractive skin on the tops of my arms, thighs, arse, and there’s no sign of it going. Apparently there’s no ‘cure’ but you can improve the look of your skin, and I wondered if anyone had found any good remedies? Scrubbing seems to make mine worse Hmm

Have you tried salicylic acid moisturisers? CeraVe do one called SA Smoothing Cream that has been keeping mine under control this winter.

TaraR2020 · 06/03/2021 00:59

Ameliorate body cream is really good for it - and affordable

Yellowbowlbanana · 06/03/2021 08:58

You need some of these:
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B081RWSM79/ref=yo_ii_img?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8
I soak them in sink first before a shower and then use them at the end.
I then use a foot cream on my problem areas. I use the Morrisons own brand which has a 25,% Urea content. Apparently it is the Urea that breaks down the dead skin.

I use hydromol ointment to moisturise with and that has made a massive difference. It’s super greasy so I only use it a couple of times a week. I shower in the early evening and then put it on with lounge wear over the top so that it doesn’t get on my clothes/furniture.

AnnaSW1 · 06/03/2021 09:23

Korean Italy towels cured mine after the first use.

AnnaSW1 · 06/03/2021 09:25

I'd get the padded ones rather than the ones a pp posted. The unpadded ones shrink to nothing but the padded ones are much easier to use and keep their shape. Either will basically work though

Yellowbowlbanana · 06/03/2021 10:20

AnnaSW1 I have never had problem with the them shrinking. I just pop them on the towel rail to dry afterwards and have re-used them lots.

When I started taking collagen supplements mine vanished in a week - it was a lovely unexpected surprise (I take inner beauty collagen liquid from cult beauty - there are cheaper ones available and apparently you want verisol collagen).

Beepbeeprichie · 06/03/2021 10:44

@Martinisarebetterdirty I came on to post the same thing. Upper arms so much smoother now

AnnaSW1 · 06/03/2021 11:07

@Yellowbowlbanana I stick mine in the washing machine. The padded ones come out much better

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 06/03/2021 11:11

@AnnaSW1 could you link to some padded ones please?

Taikoo · 06/03/2021 11:15

Any cream with at least 5% urea in it. For example - Scholl foot cream.
Rub it on your arms.
It works a treat.

RuleOfCat · 06/03/2021 11:34

Another weird but positive side-effect of a measure for something entirely different altogether: a few years back we went over to lactose-free dairy for the whole household because DD is intolerant, and I noticed after that that my keratosis was much better, especially on my arms. So maybe that in combination with something you rub on?

CimCardashian · 06/03/2021 12:09

Definitely try Cerave,it’s the only practical thing I’ve found that works. You need the smoothing cream (pale blue packaging).

Why were you take collagen @Martinisarebetterdirty ? Forgive my ignorance but is it just like taking a vitamin, or are there side effects? I might give it a go if it really works that well!
Cavagirl · 06/03/2021 12:14

The one thing I've found works for mine is sunlight (ironic as the last thing you feel like is getting your arms out). Have seriously considered moving to a hotter country at times! But getting air/daylight to the skin rather than covering up does seem to help

M0rT · 06/03/2021 12:17

BioOil works for me but I only have it on my upper arms and have to be consistent with it's use for a few weeks to see results. If I stop it comes back, so I start it around now so by the time I have to show my arms they are ok.
Sunlight does help so usually stay ok for the summer.
I take a regular VidD supplement for something else and that seems to stop it getting as bad as it did also.

Ordinary bar soap! Used with an exfoliating glove- huge difference.

Campervan69 · 06/03/2021 15:00

Mine has cleared up over lockdown. I started doing a daily morning Body Balance class. It might be increased blood flow 🤔 but my arms have toned up and KP has gone for the first time in my life.

WillyWasAWatchdog · 06/03/2021 19:41

I use Ameliorate smoothing body exfoliant applied with an exfoliating body sponge and put on Ameliorate transforming body lotion after. It has completely cleared up on one arm and just a few bumps left on the other one.

Sexnotgender · 06/03/2021 19:42

Interestingly mine has vanished since I became vegetarian.

WhatTheActualFreshHell · 06/03/2021 19:43

Ameliorate is fab! It's really worked for me.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/03/2021 19:45

I have this as does my younger son. His is much worse than mine. I haven't heard of the towels so will give them.a try

Graffitiqueen · 06/03/2021 19:45

Korean Italy towels have got rid of my KP

BakewellGin1 · 06/03/2021 19:47

Mine goes for the year if I have a few sunbed sessions (not ideal I know) or a holiday early on. It's bizzare.

Not nearly as bad now as when I was younger though.
