@doadeer. Maybe a BAFTA for the costumes?

doadeer · 06/03/2021 22:34

Oh yes, they were lovely you're right!

MissTrip82 · 07/03/2021 01:40

It’s a lot of fun.

As are the threads in which people fall over themselves to assure everyone they’ve read Austen (or Austin, as the pp who’s a ‘lifelong fan’ puts it).

Yes I did watch it. The books are very typical Mills and Boon style regency romance. In the series the only difference was they introduced characters of different ethnicities and they had classical versions of pop music. But overall... It's still just a regency romance in my opinion 🤷‍♀️. It's never going to win a bafta (well it shouldn't!)

The viewing figures were significantly higher than projected. Apparently Netflix is cockahoop with it.

Second series starts filming at Easter. I’m not sure awards are the priority TBH.

Its about 50% very attractive people talking about ettiquete and social rules and 50% very attractive people jizzing into blankets/carpets.

I am absolutely not a snob when it comes to a bit of trash TV, so I was well up for this, as I love a period comedy or drama, and especially Austen.

I found it just - meh. I think it was the female lead, Daphne? She was an insipid, chinless wonder - just too unbelievable as someone to wow the Queen and the society pages, let alone Hastings. I couldn’t get on board with her, and I think that’s where it fell down for me. I need to root for the female lead, not roll my eyes at her.

The dialogue was shite. Not a brilliant turn of phrase to be had - just people saying ‘have not’ instead of ‘haven’t’.

I lasted two episodes, tried them again a couple of weeks later, thinking surely I’ve missed something, because literally everyone raves about it. But no. Disappointing.

sweetnessnfight · 07/03/2021 04:19

Yes I loved it and wanted more..

FrenchFancie · 07/03/2021 06:39

We have just watched episode 7 of 8 - it’s a funny one in that the story changes about halfway through from flirty regency people to absolute bonk fest. It’s good fun if you don’t take it seriously. It’s not a period drama.

That being said I would not kick the duke of Hastings out of bed for eating biscuits....

Ulysses · 07/03/2021 07:15

The main storyline was the worst aspect for me. Controversial but I didn’t think the duke was all that, maybe it was the acting that was off. Nice looking guy but I couldn’t get het up up about him nor Daphne. Both a bit bland.

I did enjoy the side characters and looking forward to them coming to the fore. I’ve read the first sequel and prefer that storyline.

The costumes and settings are amazing and the other ladies get the best lines. And Eleanor.

It is a wonderful bit of escapism.

Lucaslucas1612 · 22/03/2021 10:07

I started watching it last night and ended up binge watching 5 episodes. I love it, the duke is so hot I forgive his dodgy acting. You have to take it with a pinch of salt and it's a bit of fun. But highly addictive. Can't wait to watch the rest.

piglet81 · 22/03/2021 10:23

I loved it - very entertaining, and gorgeous to look at. Then I read the first book and thought it was rubbish... the historical inaccuracy really bugged me in the book but not on the telly, for some reason.

Lucaslucas1612 · 23/03/2021 21:31

Did anyone guess who Mrs Whittington was before the end? I did by about episode 7 which is unusual for me.

HazelBite · 23/03/2021 21:41

Wonderful escapism, thoroughly enjoyed it especially the Duke of Hastings !!!

(As an aside wouldn't he make a great James Bond)
