Smol dishwasher tablets

WideLegJeans · 05/03/2021 08:06

We have only had them for a short while but they don't clean things in my dishwasher very well. However, the trust pilot reviews are mostly positive. What are others experiences if you use/have used them?

This thread is quite old, but if you've landed here looking for advice on the top detergents to buy, we've recently updated our best dishwasher tablets page with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved options. We hope it's helpful Flowers

I find they work really well. I don't add salt or rinse aid, maybe it depends on the type of water you have?

Newpotplants · 05/03/2021 13:21

The laundry ones, anyone else think their clothes smell damp after they come out of the machine? I take them out immediately and dry on radiators or hanging up to air but still never smell nice.

msssm · 05/03/2021 13:22

I had 2 use 2 at a time in my dishwasher to get anything clean. Even then it was hit or miss. Wouldn't trust their laundry products given my experience.

Drain thing sounds horrendous! I hope you informed Smol and they paid your Dyno Rod bill @JorisBonson

I destroyed the box the first time, although I hadn't bothered to read the instructions but can do it now I have.
They are 100% plastic free.

AngusThermopyle · 05/03/2021 13:24

I found the dishwasher tablets utterly rubbish too.
I do however use their laundry products, the non bio capsules and pump softener although i put it directly in the machine in a wash pod, not the drawer compartment. I've recently just tried their refillable tablet cleaner bottles too and i like them.

spiderlight · 05/03/2021 13:29

The laundry pods used to smell amazing and I used them for years, but for the last few months everything's had a weird chemical smell as soon as it comes out of the machine. I actually thought at first that it was a fault with our new washing machine, but it's fine with other pods or with powder. I've switched to Ecover powder now and paused my Smol plan for a bit.

theneverendinglaundry · 05/03/2021 13:34

I live in a really hard water area so always add salt and rinse aid separately. I find smol to be fine, they get everything clean. However I'm wondering if I should just use a boxed powder beings as I am using salt and rinse aid separately anyway.

I'm not well suited to subscriptions as I like to buy the whole months worth on payday. Often my budget ends up being tight and then a subscription charge can mess things up.

Carolina24 · 05/03/2021 13:36

They’ve been totally fine for us, no discernible difference between them and fairy.

FamilyOfAliens · 05/03/2021 13:37

I’ve been using their products for years - love their non-bio laundry pods and fabric softener, and the dishwasher tablets work just fine for us.

But I’m comparing them with the supermarket brands products we’ve always used - I’ve never used Finish or any brand that tests on animals. The supermarket brands also need rinse aid and salt added, so we’re used to that.

OP, I would email smol - I’ve found them very responsive to queries and as a small company they need to know if a customer isn’t happy. They’re not like Proctor & Gamble or any of the multinationals, who can afford to ignore the odd unsatisfied customer.

theneverendinglaundry · 05/03/2021 13:40

Just to add I've also tried the non bio laundry tabs and the fabcon. I dont mind the laundry tabs, they work fine for us, but the fabcon didnt make anything soft and everything came out of the dryer crumpled and full of static. I would rather use method or ecozone, they are also tallow free and work better.

ChocOrange1 · 05/03/2021 13:40

I was not impressed with the dishwasher tablets. I used them a few times and everything was cloudy and streaky. Wr live in a very hard water area so always add salt and rinse aid anyway.

The laundry tabs seem to be quite good, but my husband recently complained of itchy skin so I've switched back to our usual brand and then I'll try smol again to see if this is causing the itch. Hopefully not.

WaterGarden · 05/03/2021 13:51

I live in a hard water area so need rinse aide and salt regardless of if a product is 3 in 1. I had to with other brands so have carried on.

Theres some reviews of brands here www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/review/best-dishwasher-tablets-buy-uk/amp

VenusClapTrap · 05/03/2021 14:11

I was about Ito request the trial pack of the dishwasher tabs so I’m glad I’ve read this. Won’t bother now. I use the laundry pods but I have to put two in each wash or things don’t get properly clean. Which is a bit expensive.

Mumteedum · 05/03/2021 14:18

@WaterGarden

My reason for swapping to Smol was that I shop with tesco online and there weren't any dishwashing products without plastic. Even Ecover had plastic wrappers for the tablets. Cardboard is obviously better than plastic for the environment
Yes, my reason for trying them! I don't understand it from ecover! Can't method get on it? Then everything would smell lovelyif I got round to doing some cleaningGrin

Anyway trial pack arrived in post. I have got load on now....

WaterGarden · 05/03/2021 14:34

Ha ha. I know the feeling Grin

Jackparlabane · 05/03/2021 15:04

Good to see responses from actual users.

I use Lidl tabs which don't have any individual packaging, just the wrap that dissolves in the dishwasher. Both the 3in1 and the standard are good.

WideLegJeans · 05/03/2021 15:18

We're in a very hard water area and make sure the dishwasher has salt and rinse aid regardless of whether the tablets have it in as it's needed but things haven't improved. I used a few of my DMs Powerball ones (not sure what the brand is) and everything was sparkling again. To the PP who suggested speaking with them I'll drop them a line. It's a shame because it's a great idea but I don't want to wash things up to put them in the dishwasher!

apparently Aldi don't test anything on animals - I'm not sure who does in the UK so that one went out a while back.

Smol are expensive due to the postage and the excess packaging, cardboard or not. And, I fear, due to the advertising and branding.

Gilead · 05/03/2021 15:26

They seem fine to me.

FamilyOfAliens · 05/03/2021 15:34

That’s good to know about Aldi. I’ve not seen anything on their packaging but tbf I haven’t been there for a while.

Any company that sells its products in China has to carry out animal testing by law. So all the big pharmaceutical companies like P&G, Johnson & Johnson etc. use animal testing. People may not mind if the animal testing isn’t carried out in their own country but it doesn’t make that company’s products cruelty free.

I was retching so badly I didn't get the chance to take a picture, so no evidence sadly.
Mumteedum · 05/03/2021 16:06

Well.. reporting back on first smol wash. Seems fine. Not the most scented but fine. Perfectly shiny glasses.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 05/03/2021 16:14

I find they work absolutely fine. I've got a fairly new dishwasher though and I clean the filter regularly. I'm pretty lax about pre rinsing stuff though tbh.

LadyDanburysCane · 05/03/2021 16:31

I use the dishwasher tablets. For me they work brilliantly. The wrapping isn’t plastic and completely dissolves. I tested by dropping a tablet into a jug of warm water (hand hot) and giving it a stir - all dissolved no problem.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 05/03/2021 16:45

One wash doesn't tell you anything - there's usually enough residues in the machine to clean dishes once or twice without any tablet at all!

The 'Sun' ones they sell at Poundland are good (albeit in plastic wrap) - we ordered tabs and loo roll and stuff from an office supplies place when first lockdown happened and those were what they sent. Kept us going for 6 months (200 loo rolls lasted less long!)
