The healthiest biscuits that are actually nice

I have a terrible packet of biscuit habit and I need to wean off onto something a bit healthier, but I can't go cold turkey which probably would be a better choice 😉----

What's the best and healthiest. Also I'd prefer not zillions in a pack and I can't stop myself. I'm otherwise a healthy eater, exercise, active and don't drink. Maybe a tad overweight due to the biscuits though.

I bought chocolate Lotus biscuits last week and didn’t realise they were mini packs rather than a standard packet to go in the biscuit tub. Three to a pack, think it said about 60 calories.

RampantIvy · 05/03/2021 09:47

This is going against your request, but maybe if you got some biscuits that weren't as nice you wouldn't be tempted to demolish the entire packet? I read something like this ages ago about diet advice, that you eat less of something if it was rather dull or you didn't like it very much.

In my case it would be the Nairn oatcakes beloved by quite a few posters on here. They just suck the moisture out of my mouth and taste of sawdust.

But really, the only way to break the habit is to go cold turkey. I give up all things sweet for Lent (I'm not religious BTW. It is a good short, sharp fix for me and works well). I find that after a few days I stop wanting to eat anything sweet.

Stop buying biscuits and get some bananas instead (unless you hate them Grin). The sweetness might help curb your biscuit cravings.

Biscotti are lower in fat and sugar than most biscuits.

I don’t buy biscuits for this very reason

Occasionally I make biscuits and will eat those but at least that way there is the extra barrier of having to be arsed/find time to make them.

I did end up eating two crumpets with lemon curd yesterday with my cuppa though so am not exactly a paragon.

ShowOfHands · 05/03/2021 10:59

Biscuits aren't healthy. But eating something simply for pleasure isn't a problem, it's more that you eat too many. The odd biscuit is fine. You just need to find a way to eat only one or two. Single packets or only buying one large pack a fortnight without giving in and buying more helps spread it out. If you run out, then you run out and do without for however long you have left.

The best way to avoid eating the whole packet is to put two on a plate and then put the packet back in the cupboard (having sealed it in a ziploc bag/tupperware to make it stay fresh and more difficult to access)

and only then sit down to eat your two biscuits

never ever sit down with the packet next to you!

I buy Oreos and Custard creams for the DC, because I really don’t like them (the biscuits, not the kids).

With this in mind, I've just bought a multipack of single finger twixes. Lets see if I can make them last until next weekend?

If I can persuade one of the cats to sit on my lap while I'm sat down with the single twix, chances are I won't get up to get another one while they're there.

goose1964 · 05/03/2021 14:00

I was told that if you want to cut back on biscuits make sure the only packet in the house is rich tea. They're so awful they'll just stay in the packet.

zzzooomwatcher · 05/03/2021 14:02

Maybe you have to go cold turkey on the biscuits if it's that big a problem?

fairislecable · 05/03/2021 14:05

At work we used to take it in turns to supply the biscuits and at coffee time I could never resist them.

However I hate Fig Rolls so on my week that’s what I bought and it really helped me to stop eating.

So only buy biscuits you really hate as you have to be desperate to eat them!

Carycy · 05/03/2021 14:20

Nairns chocolate chip oatcakes.

TheDamnFoolThatShotHim · 05/03/2021 14:27

Party rings are only 25 calories each. They come in stacks of 4 in the packet, so you can have a whole 'stack' for only 100cal.

Seems like you're getting a decent amount so feels satisfying, but no way near the same number of calories you'd get from 4 of many other biscuits.

hellohelpfuladvice · 05/03/2021 14:36

Yeah I absolutely hate fig rolls, we have those and I can certainly resist, so they stay in the cupboard.

I've had 4 of the kids individual Soreen malt loaves today, there's five in a packet so I've saved one for later will try to resist . The big packet is my barrier not something being individually wrapped Blush. I think it's just lockdown boredom and being home with the little ones. I never used to even have a sweet tooth.

I ate a whole of a really big packet of custard creams yesterday and felt so bloated and sluggish. Hence my post that I need to stop.

Send me self control please ?!

@BarbaraofSeville that sounds a tough one. Keep us posted 🤞

hellohelpfuladvice · 05/03/2021 14:40

@minipie I always put pack in the tin and in the cupboard and then go back and get more. I was only having one soreen this morning and had 4. Once I start, I'm like pac man.

Rice cakes. Fill the gap especially if you get Sainsbury’s ones with a yogurt topping and seeds, but let’s face it, you aren’t going to pig out on rice cakes and end up eating the whole packet.........

bdd2017 · 05/03/2021 14:51

Nairns dark choc ones, 👌

DioneTheDiabolist · 05/03/2021 14:52

I love oat biscuits (not oat cakes). They are satisfyingly sweet and rich, go well with tea or milk and are surprisingly filling.

Fortunefavours1 · 06/03/2021 17:44

@tinkerbellvspredator
Interested in the recipe upthread, is this mixture then made into biscuit shapes and baked? Tia

ElderMillennial · 06/03/2021 17:49

I think it's better to have a few biscuits that you actually like rather than eating a biscuit you don't even like that much just because it's lower in calories...

Saying that I find the small bags can be good for portion control, you know the ones where you give five small packs of cookies, animal biscuits, Jammie dodgers or whatever it is or you can get Oreos in portioned packs.

LegendDairy · 06/03/2021 17:50

I'd rather have 2 chocolate hob nobs than 10 rich teas.

3JsMa · 06/03/2021 17:59

I'm the same and once I start I can't stop.''Just a last one...' mantra doesn't work, neither is hiding them as I know where they bloody are.
I find some substitutes, which although not biscuits per se but are more forgiving then custard creams or chocolate Digestive Thins.
Things I enjoy:
Crispbread
Matzos
Cream crackers
Breadsticks
Chorley cakes(I could eat whole pack but 1 is usually enough to make me full enough to stop)
Fruit shortcake if I really miss biscuits

HappydaysArehere · 06/03/2021 18:01

Anystarinthesky I am absolutely addicted to ginger nuts. I can’t stop eating them. It would be fine if I could keep to 2 or 3 but I just keep going. I need help.
