Really disappointed in this. Yes the country's finances are in dire straits but really thought they'd do better than this.

Jesus, 1%? That's sickening. What was the last MP pay rise again?

20viona · 04/03/2021 20:07

Where have you seen this? What a joke to all those staff working tirelessly throughout.

DareIask · 04/03/2021 20:09

Both the BBC and Sky are reporting it.

I feel like it will cost us more to implement than staff will benefit from that. I'd rather have free parking for a year Sad

ThePontiacBandit · 04/03/2021 20:11

My last pay rise didn’t even cover the increase in my pension costs. It’s a slap in the face, especially to front line staff who have been caring for Covid patients.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/03/2021 20:12

It's on the bbc

Absolutely disgraceful

Umbridge34 · 04/03/2021 20:13

Yet doctors and dentists were rewarded a 2.8% rise last year that was billed as a reward for their hard work during the pandemic.

NoMackerelInSwindon · 04/03/2021 20:22

If a nurse would kindly start a petition on You.Gov ie the Parliament website for a rise at inflation+1% for the next 5 years I will gladly sign it and I suspect millions of others will also. I will happily pay more tax for our essential services.

ChameleonClara · 04/03/2021 20:26

It is frustrating to see them treated this way.

This is what the Conservatives do - big contracts to their friends, nothing for the rest.

I'd like to think the general public will be behind us but in my experience a significant number will be thinking yhe following:

"Lazy nurses just being greedy"
"At least they've got a job"
"I haven't had a pay rise in years so neither should they"
"Try working in the private sector"
"There's no money for it what with all the costs of the pandemic"
"I know a nurse whos been working from home and done nothing during the pandemic so they don't deserve a rise"

I hope I'm wrong but I've seen comments like the above time and time again.

Totally agree. This is scandalous.

To be honest, isn't 1% better than nothing? Many people have lost their jobs or taken huge pay cuts to remain employed. Lots of people won't be getting a pay rise this year either, so 1% is better than most people will be getting.

Didn't nurses get 3% last year or 3% over three years?

Hey look, @Umbridge34 , you were right! And it only took two posts!
Chimoia · 04/03/2021 20:39

I think it will be to do with the previously agreed banding increases for the next few years which might not help people at the top of bands but I know personally my next few pay increments are looking fairly generous. Not saying that people should not argue for more, but there are a lot of public servants who have had very flat pay and are more due an increase in my opinion, dh being one of them.

VinylDetective · 04/03/2021 20:40

If any of those people were pulling 12 hour shifts in full PPE, they have my sympathy. NHS staff are on their bloody knees and they’re offered an insulting 1%. The NHS is a monopoly employer, it’s not as if they can just go and work somewhere else.

DareIask · 04/03/2021 20:40

@Chimoia if you were experienced at the top of a band you'd think very differently.

1% is awful. If you are on £40k, that equates to an extra £400. Which is then approx £250 after tax, NI etc. So less that £25 extra per month to have had to work in often terrifying and emotionally breaking environments for over a year. And most staff in the nhs are on less than £40k, so this is a rosier portrayal than would be for most.
DareIask · 04/03/2021 20:45

Exactly. Percentage pay rises are very misleading. 1% of not much isn't much at all.

Docketpuo · 04/03/2021 20:48

As an NHS employee, I am grateful for any small pay rise. Mainly I am grateful to have a job and usually as many extra hours as I want to work.
In this economy, I wasn't expecting much.

Having said that, I am really appreciative of public support. Yes it is difficult in PPE, but nowhere near as difficult as dealing with life and death situations, and the emotional toll that takes.

Begonias · 04/03/2021 20:51

Our local council is increasing the council tax by 5% and giving their staff 2.5% pay rise, as "they've worked throughout a difficult time".
Were they working on the frontline with covid patients or in the labs handling covid patient samples err no. So how can you justify 2.5% pay rise for government workers who were at minimal risk yet those facing the highest risk 1%. It makes no sense.

BigPaperBag · 04/03/2021 21:22

The pay rises and pay increments are a joke. When I last went up an increment within my band, despite it only being about £500 a YEAR more I actually ended up taking home £40 a month less 🤦‍♀️ This is because I very slightly tip over into the band where you have to contribute 9.3% of your salary rather than 7.1%. They haven’t changed the boundary for the change in pension contributions in years so it hasn’t kept up with inflation, it’s a joke. No-one should have a ‘payrise’ and take home less money.

Mum2jenny · 04/03/2021 21:23

Very pissed off if this is true!

DareIask · 04/03/2021 21:29

@BigPaperBag this stops many going for promotion (to 8a if I remember correctly?).

On top of taking longer to get to top of scale it all stinks

It's hilarious. My colleagues and I have been through a hellish year, risked death just by coming to work (not alone in that obvs) and our reward is1% plus of course frozen income tax thresholds. Better start applying lube before each shift as clearly the government has centre parc style plans for us.

NoMackerelInSwindon · 04/03/2021 23:50

Another thing that irks me is NHS staff car-parking. They build the super hospitals on the edge of cities and close to trunk roads and transport links and it is unavoidable that staff have to travel by car to reach work. Then they have to pay to park all day. If I were Chancellor I would make parking free to all NHS staff frontline or back office.
