Really disappointed in this. Yes the country's finances are in dire straits but really thought they'd do better than this.

I’d prefer free staff parking. I have to pay £8 a shift.

ukgift2016 · 05/03/2021 06:09

You already had a pay rise not long ago...

I am a social worker, a profession which never gets recognised, only vilified and we worked throughout the pandemic too.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 05/03/2021 06:24

the pay rise and will use that term loosely was to bring our wages up to date after 10 years of pay freezes. I've tried not to spend it all at once.
Unless you live under a rock you should know this.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2021 06:24

That's because we got paid in kind by people clapping. And a lot of free coffee!

VivaLeBeaver · 05/03/2021 06:34

I think it’s over 2 years as well....so 0.5% each year.

And then with the freeze on income tax levels won’t people actually be worse off?

WetJan · 05/03/2021 06:34

I'd rather they did nothing at all. 1% is an insult and still manages to bring out resentment from other people. Like being given a mouldy banana and a slap in the face for looking ungrateful.

Dragon23 · 05/03/2021 07:18

@Umbridge34

Yet doctors and dentists were rewarded a 2.8% rise last year that was billed as a reward for their hard work during the pandemic.
That pay rise was for consultants and associate specialists. Junior doctors got nothing. These are doctors who’s training has been massively affected and are now potentially going to have to extend training to make up time to ensure they have the required assessments, clinic time etc complete. 1% is rubbish, particularly after years of freezes.
letsnotscaretheneighbours · 05/03/2021 07:25

*I'd like to think the general public will be behind us but in my experience a significant number will be thinking yhe following:

"Lazy nurses just being greedy"
"At least they've got a job"
"I haven't had a pay rise in years so neither should they"
"Try working in the private sector"
"There's no money for it what with all the costs of the pandemic"
"I know a nurse whos been working from home and done nothing during the pandemic so they don't deserve a rise"*

I don't in the slightest think this, but I am worried about where we are going to get all the money to rebalance UKs books after the pandemic.

1% is nothing.

Someone mentioned upthread about parking at NHS hospitals. Where I am they're all privatised parking. That does need to stop. Surely the profit from parking could go directly to the hospital.

A "payrise" that is below inflation is actually a pay cut, just a smaller payout that nurses get in the years pay is frozen.

A nurse of my grade is paid 20% in real terms (I.e. compared against inflation) than they were a decade ago. It is a huge, huge reduction.

There was many last year for senior doctors, police and teachers to have above inflation rises. There have been countless big rises for MPs.

We currently have such a severe nurse shortage that staffing levels are unsafe in many areas. Clearly the year on year paycuts nurses are subject to is a factor here.

Stompythedinosaur · 05/03/2021 08:30

*a smaller paycut (not payout)

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/03/2021 08:33

BBC news this morning, a bit sickening to me really as a nurse and quite insulting.
Lady wearing red, her name escapes me. MP used to be a nurse I think.
Said that Nurses won't leave, they have a vocation! I think she's mistaking nurses for nuns with a vow of poverty. Stupid woman, they have bills, mortages and kids to pay for. Nursing isn't some little job for pin money.
Those feeling the pinch really should look at the private sector.
I'm now in Dementia care, loving it, and earning more than I did in the NHS.

Nadine Dorries? She is currently trying on good morning Britain trying to defend it. Apparently nurses should be grateful for 1% when other public sector workers are getting nothing. I must of dreamed up the pay rise for MPs of 3.1% last April.
Babylonberlin · 05/03/2021 08:51

@Dragon23 according to her mps didn't accept the rise so who knows. She also defended mps having to use expenses to buy computers to wfh Hmm
and claimed that nurses earned £34,000 pa, tell that to my bank account Grin

Rupertpenrysmistress · 05/03/2021 08:53

Tbh I am not in the least bit surprised, it's what I expected from a conservative government. Would rather they just ploughed it back in, it's insulting.
Hospital I work in is so short staffed it's killing us, patients are so I'll and very frail, and of course we are still getting outbreaks of covid. This is long from over for the NHS

feathermucker · 05/03/2021 08:58

In real terms, when tax etc is taken into account, it means very, very little indeed and those saying we should be grateful don't bother to look into what the 1% actually means!

How quickly the clapping and windiw rainbows turned into comments telling us we should be grateful.

It's demoralising and demeaning and being defended publicly by those who have no fucking idea.

stampsurprise · 05/03/2021 09:03

Shocking. No wonder we have shortages of nursing staff in this country.

If we didn’t appreciate them before, you’d think COVID would have made people aware of the harrowing work these people perform.

This pay rise is an insult!

nonono1 · 05/03/2021 09:11

I can’t believe people are complaining about getting a pay rise. My work has all but dried up due to the pandemic - I’m in dire financial straits and am terrified that my family and I will be made homeless. I would love to have a job right now, let alone a pay rise.

Dragon23 · 05/03/2021 09:11

I think their 2020 pay rise of 3.1% went ahead but it was frozen for 202. So no rise this April for them but that is after 10 years of above inflation rises so not really the same is it Nadine Dorries?!

Iwonder08 · 05/03/2021 09:21

It was a stupid idea. 1% is insulting and we simply can't afford any pay rises post covid. It would have been better not to give any pay rise

Kroptopbelly · 05/03/2021 09:26

Won’t even cover what I have to pay to come to work and park or my yearly fees for the privilege of being a nurse.
No where near.
Why bother carrying on.
I am actively looking for a job outside the NHS.

Blacktothepink · 05/03/2021 09:30

A relative is a hca on a covid ward and gets less than a tenner an hour...and has to pay to park their car, it’s a bloody disgrace 😡

drinkingwineoutofamug · 05/03/2021 09:35

Just saw this on twitter. Someone else put a post saying a nurse earns £33k + a year. Excuse me as I fall on the floor laughing. Newly qualified here. £21 k
Yes I'm band 4 nursing associate but the only difference between me and a band 5 nurse , they can do iv meds and I can't.

1% pay rise recommended for nhs staff.
GravityFalls · 05/03/2021 09:46

I'm a teacher so used to all the "lucky to have a job" comments - I totally think any pay rise should be worth having and I find it totally disgusting that hospital staff are charged to park at work. Sheer profit-raking.

Nobody should be grateful to have a job. There's enough work for everyone to have employment, but what happens is that people with jobs get squeezed and worked harder and harder for less money, while those without jobs look on enviously. Fair pay and fair working conditions benefits everyone.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 05/03/2021 10:48

Yes I think I was Nadine Dorries, silly woman.
I don't know any nurses in band 5 who earn £33k thats band 6 and most nurses stay band 5 forever.

BigPaperBag · 05/03/2021 11:51
@BigPaperBag this stops many going for promotion (to 8a if I remember correctly?).

On top of taking longer to get to top of scale it all stinks
I would imagine it does. I’m a band 5 and am very cheesed off as I don’t go up again until next year so am stuck with £40 a month less until next year. Cheers NHS.
