Healthy snacks for a hotel without fridge or kettle?

MrsKingfisher · 03/03/2021 23:17

I'm going to have to quarantine in a foreign hotel for 5 days. All work related nothing remotely holiday like.

I'll be alone, unable to leave the hotel so I'm planning on putting some items in my case to help me out. So far I've got Dairymilk Grin

What can I pack that I don't need a kettle or a fridge for?

Ive asked if the hotel could provide a kettle, they said no but I could take a travel kettle.

Nuts are good.
Also some decent herbal teas or something like red bush.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/03/2021 23:23

I would take a travel kettle if they won't supply one. Then you can do things like pot noodles, cuppa soups, basic hot drinks, instant pasta etc.

Other things could be cereal bars, crisps, rice cakes and peanut butter, tinned fruit salad, crackers, those mini pots of jelly, cookies, tinned tuna and probably a lot of junk food Grin

Will you have a microwave?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/03/2021 23:24

Oh and some more - nuts, things like beef jerky, raisins, trail mix type foods, dried fruit.

SaigonSaigon · 03/03/2021 23:24

Nuts, seeds, dried fruit, Naked bars, crackers, breadsticks, chewing gum, vodka, chocolate Grin

whatisthislifesofullofcare · 03/03/2021 23:26

travel kettle definitely. tea, instant hot choc, super noodles. Nuts, dried fruit, mints, protein bars, oatcakes, those tiny bottles of highly concentrated squash.

MrsKingfisher · 03/03/2021 23:26

No microwave either, I think I'll have to pack a travel kettle.

Might have to take a small hand luggage back with all my spoils!

Maybe grab some protein bars??

MrsKingfisher · 03/03/2021 23:27

Hand luggage bag not back! Great suggestions thank you.

Naked bars will be great for energy and they taste amazing

Teentitansonloop · 03/03/2021 23:29

Just be careful in case you're not allowed to take certain foods in luggage. Australia seems particularly strict. Will there be room service available?

lurker101 · 03/03/2021 23:29

I would get a few of the graze boxes, that way you can have a variety of different snacks which would be “exciting” for a few days in quarantine.

Tayto popcorn is amazing (as are the crisps) if you can get them.

If you can arrange a kettle I would definitely get some nice tea or coffee that you could enjoy - maybe some of the flowering tea? I love them.

Some Percy pig or tangfastics.

Remember to check what can/can’t be brought into the country, you don’t want to lose your haul at the airport.

Cereal bars
Dry fruit
Nuts
Jelly pots
Fruit pots
Tins that have ring pulls...I love sweet corn straight out of the can
Individually wrapped croissants/pains au chocolat
Crisps
Biscuits
Chocolate

Get some meal replacement diet packs like lighter life or exante- that way you know you will be getting all the nutrients you need which a pot noodle probably can't provide.

If you have an Asian supermarket/section then the Chinese versions of pot noodles are 100x nicer as well.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/03/2021 23:34

Oh and yes, double check what you can and can't import, otherwise you risk losing your food and getting a massive fine on top!

whatever1980 · 03/03/2021 23:34

Small toaster and travel kettle

MrsKingfisher · 03/03/2021 23:35

Reading all these suggestions I think I'll just unpack my clothes leave my underwear in but just pack food and gin Smile Room service is available I believe, kindle is loaded, lots of tv stuff loaded on my iPad.

Fruit

HollowTalk · 03/03/2021 23:52

Which country? I was horrified when I heard a woman on the woman's hour saying that her gin was confiscated and no alcohol is allowed.

TheTeenageYears · 04/03/2021 00:17

Been there, done that unfortunately

Bread rolls (packed in a small box so not squashed)
Ring pull tinned tuna/other fish
There are quite a lot of ready to eat tuna plus other things available if travelling from the U.K.
Breakfast biscuits
Small cartons of fruit juice
Nuts
Biscuits
Flavoured rice cakes
Crackers
Marmite/bovril
Pringles
Tinned/small pots of fruit (very few countries allow you to take in fresh fruit)
Bilton/beef jerky if rules allow
Slice cheese (if rules allow cheese), wrap in portion & freeze, put in a small thermal lunch bag with a couple of frozen bottles of water (will stay cold for a couple of days of cheese and bottles of water more use than melted ice packs)
Long life milk
Cereal (if you can cope with room temp milk)

Take a plate, bowl, cup & cutlery
Little bottle of washing up liquid
Small washing up cloth
Tea towel

I don't know which country you are going to but having recently watched a programme about Australian Customs, would definitely double check. One couple were fined $220 for having two bananas in their luggage which they had been given on the aircraft. Shock

Yup I am in New Zealand and know people who have been fined for bringing in things they shouldn't for bio security reasons. One was fined for bringing a banana, and the other for having too much mud on his boots.

I don’t know how they didn’t know. The amount of signs and bins to tell you what isn’t allowed is VERY clear. You have to fill a form in in the plane as well.

Turning up at arrivals with a banana is plain stupid.

Yep, but there are signs everywhere when you land in Australia telling you to get rid of your food products. They also generally tell you in the plane and it's on your customs card that you fill in before landing.

There's really no way of missing it. There are bins everywhere too before you hit customs so you can get rid of any food you might have on you!
