Two weeks off and fuck all to do

Saved a couple of weeks annual leave to the end of the financial year and was hoping I could at least book an Airbnb for a few days but nope. DH is unable to take AL at the same time. What should I do that isn't just watching Netflix all day like I do with every other evening and weekend. Oh and walks. TV and walking. I already know I'm just going to do bloody chores. I dont have DC.

What would you do with two weeks off with nowhere to go?

I would do an online language course or get the materials to teach myself a new craft skill and I'd watch subtitled films that noone else in my family is interested in. I'd do virtual museum tours and probably cook different things (but I feel more burnt out from cooking than walking so maybe not). But that's what I like What do you like doing in non covid times?

Wolfiefan · 03/03/2021 12:36

Try new recipes
Read a book
Start a new craft

sittingonacornflake · 03/03/2021 12:38

I'd probably do 'project me' for 2 weeks so sleep lots, eat well, drink lots of water, absolutely loads of exercise, read, maybe a small, project like decorate a room, sort through clothes and sell on eBay that type of thing

LegoPirateMonkey · 03/03/2021 12:40

Read, write, draw, do jigsaws while listening to podcasts, yoga, take a bath in the middle of the day, cook something complicated or order a restaurant meal kit to pretend you’re eating out on holiday, order cocktails or a wine tasting pack for an evening ‘out’ on Zoom, watch a brilliant box set, definitely no chores!

Awarsewolf · 03/03/2021 12:41

Christ. Poor you. I'm absolutely desperate to spend my income but I REFUSE to buy anymore chocolate, food, drink or house stuff. I want to spend it on travel or activities. The prospect of using annual leave to go walking or watch TV is soul destroying. Can you not sell it instead?

SingingSands · 03/03/2021 12:46

Oh I feel you - I had three days AL last week before the weekend and it was rubbish.

Walks, tv, pottered in the garden, read some magazines and did not much else, it was so boring! I mean, it was nice not to be working but I wanted to jump in the car and drive to the coast for a day out wandering around Filey or head up to the Dales for a walk and a pub lunch.

AL seems a bit pointless when there's nothing to do and nowhere to go!

SinkGirl · 03/03/2021 12:47

I can only dream of such a thing!

I would start a big new project so I had something to show at the end of it. Right now while my boys are at school I’m working flat out on a new paper cutting design for my shop, and I could do something much bigger and trickier with two whole weeks with nothing else to do!

If you don’t have a hobby start one - paper cutting is a great one (and I say that not just because I sell kit but because it’s true) - it’s quicker than knitting etc, far cheaper than any other kind of art and looks awesome when it’s done.

Right, better get back to south London before they get home!

My 2weeks leave starts on Monday
And I’m shielding until March 31st
Suppose I could clean the house Sad

clary · 03/03/2021 12:49

I'm off this week and have tried to organise a small thing for each day. A walk with a friend, eye appointment (! exciting!) baking; today DD and I are going to do a craft thing she wants me to make for her room.

Some ideas:
Reading (I have finished a book in three days, it was good tho)
Yoga (I do an online video every day)
Running
Research project - travel, famous person, subject
Cross stitch
Jigsaws
eBay all the tat you have accumulated

MuggleStudiesResearchProject · 03/03/2021 12:51

I'd spend the very first day blitzing cleaning and tidying so I could totally relax into the rest of the time without it pressing on me. Then lots of reading, maybe try and start planning/writing the (non-fiction) book that I have an idea for, painting (art not decorating - although decorating a room could be a good project too). I'd love to get a whole load of things I've been putting off listing on ebay done, but probably would put them off a bit longer. Maybe some gardening. I've got a few items of clothing I want to alter or customise. I'd actually love to do a whole house declutter but whilst rewarding it would also be quite draining I think. Cuddling the dog and watching films whilst eating chocolate sounds like more fun.

Love51 · 03/03/2021 12:52

Decorate. My dining room needs painting, then I'll order some flooring.

BiddyPop · 03/03/2021 12:53

I am longing for this.

Work is so busy I can't get out much for walks and I have not had time to indulge in my crafting for months.

I would also love at least 1 solid day to empty out the kitchen - cupboards, fridge, freezer etc - and go through everything to dump what we won't eat now things are so totally different and our eating patterns have changed. And another day to do a big batch cooking of meals we enjoy for the freezer, including doing a curry feast for dinner with at least 3 curry sauces to freeze lots of leftovers and some bombay potatoes (leftovers for lunch next day) and HM naan breads - and to try out a couple of recipes over the week as well. And spend time using up odds and sods that I don't have time to think through or have all the ingredients I'd need while working.

A full on proper indulgent pampering session (maybe a half day?) - deep condition hair, scrub and facemask and serum my face, deal with spots (use pore strips everywhere needed), wax legs, pluck chin/eyebrows, have a long soak in a bath and use a body scrub while there (after at least 2 chapters of a book or 2 episodes of something streamed, and likely a glass of wine), file and paint all nails, ..etc.

Enjoy some walks in daytime in the spring sunshine. Drink my coffee in the garden (wearing a coat if necessary but getting out for Vit D and birdsong). Probably enjoying that coffee with a fresh bun/cake at least a couple of mornings.

Catch up on sleep (really desperately needed).

Browse online for necesssary clothes to replace things worn/grown out of, and also for new suppliers of things like good coffee, good chocolate, meal kits, etc. And also look for presents I can order for occasions coming up (a few birthdays in extended family).

Sit and read at least 2 of my stack of books waiting for some quiet time. And probably also try and read some of my books that are more factual - I am trying to learn navigation and that takes time to figure out.

Start getting the garden ready for growing some veg this summer.

Tidy some of the rooms that have descended into chaos, and get rid of rubbish to the dump. Accept that while I'd like to donate lots to charity shops, they won't be open for a while and inundated when they are - so gracefully accept the need to dump things. Or take the time to put the things I no longer need/want on freecycle/other sites where others could make use of them.

StillGoingToWork · 03/03/2021 12:54

We started refurbishing our flat 😱. Hours spent online choosing samples for curtains, blinds and flooring. Down the rabbit hole...

MoChridhe · 03/03/2021 12:56

I had 3 weeks off. I painted my whole house bright colours in every room. Even had time to change floors downstairs. Now waiting for new furniture to arrive. All the working from home made me hate my house the way it was. I am now happier and looking forward to summer get togethers to show off.

Timeforabiscuit · 03/03/2021 13:00

House project like a garden makeover?

Fuckadoodledoooo · 03/03/2021 13:02

In your position, I would just get pissed, eat pizza and sleep for two weeks.

Titsinknicks · 03/03/2021 13:10

Sorry to those who are too busy to take time off, I must sound ungrateful. You see I've been doing fancy recipes, craft stuff, online classes... So desperate for a change of scene! If I was doing a normal staycation I'd go to galleries, posh cinemas in the middle of the day, a solo lunch somewhere nice... Bliss.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I should set myself a craft challenge or something.

@sinkgirl link for your kit please?

OP posts:
LegoPirateMonkey · 03/03/2021 13:24

I know what you mean about the change of scene. I’d prefer to be working but somewhere different than off work at home with the exact same views and walks. I so wish we could travel to a holiday cottage or something - obviously understand why we cant! It’s not practical but I’d love to book a self catering break, have a food shop delivered there and do nothing but go for socially distanced walks by the sea in breaks from work.

SinkGirl · 03/03/2021 13:40

Sure it’s here - and there are plenty of other templates available individually if you want to give it a little try first :)

Really hope you enjoy your break - I was just joking before, I think plenty of us have had enough of being stuck at home this past year!

UhtredRagnarson · 03/03/2021 13:42

Do you have a cat? My cat has proven very successful in helping me answer the “what should I do” question. He lies on my feet and then I have no choice but to stay put for long periods of time. The choice is totally taken from me. It’s very liberating tbh.

Sorry OP. Maybe that’s not the advice you were hoping for. Grin

CormoranStrike · 03/03/2021 13:44

I’m the same.

I’ve started an online boot camp, and I am trying new recipes.

I am also catching up on some Tv shows.

Beaniecats · 03/03/2021 13:45

Rubbish isn't it. I have leave to take but no point

peak2021 · 03/03/2021 14:09

Decorating seems something to consider I think. Or something about the garden if you have one.

saltandsugar · 03/03/2021 14:46

I would de-clutter and clean my house from top to bottom, then sort the garden.

Unfortunately my house is currently full - 2 adults WFH and and cat & dog.
No room to sort anything and I have to deadly quiet so I would probably just do the garden and then catch up with the stack of reading I have.
