As per title really

Looking at buying a laptop and totally overwhelmed with the choice

I THINK I want/need

8gb ram
256gb ssd
A good quality screen and camera
Decent battery life
Comfortable illuminated keyboard with numeric keypad (this never seems to be described!)

Am I wishful thinking?

i3 is pretty basic these days. It's ok if all you want to do is word process and read emails but as things progress you may find it runs out of steam pretty soon.

About 5-10 years ago Intel processors were the bees knees. AMD couldn't touch them. Then they suddenly upped their game and in the last couple of years have overtaken intel and usually at a lower price. I'd say the Ryzen 5 outstrips the i-5 and is the 4000 series gives the i-7 a run for it's money. I don't game, I use my laptop for work and using the internet/zoom but I believe the AMD graphics cards are better than Intel. My i-7 laptio has a Nividea graphics card which is apparently very good but I don't do anything that requires it . For me, speed of internet browsing is very important and I wouldn;t go below an i-5 for that reason (and even within the same processor class there are different generations/processor speeds)

The one thing I will say is that don't go by the brand alone. Within each brand there are different classes of laptop and even within the same class there are huge differences.

Graphista · 03/03/2021 13:07

@Comefromaway thanks for the heads up - I was afraid that would be the case with the processor

The intel/amd thing rather sounds like what happened with Microsoft and Apple back in the day (yes I'm old!) Microsoft and windows particular were "the thing" back in the early to mid 90's for most people buying home computers and even in workplaces, Apple were not doing so well, then came the iPod! And things from that point really turned around for Apple.

Am I right in thinking it's similar?

Thank you for your post very interesting although

If I were to list the laptops I was considering you guys happy to comment?

They also need to be available for delivery which is something I know changes according to stock availability but it's a way of whittling for now

I have a 5 (6?) year old dell. It's been problem free until recently. Now it's a bit of a belligerent old bastard that randomly falls out with things. We buy all our laptops from the dell outlet though. There's some genuine bargains to be had and they're generally rock solid and easy to maintain.

CassandraCross · 03/03/2021 13:19

I recently got an Asus, it's brilliant I would highly recommend it.

Have had Acer and HP in the past and have found them temperamental even when they were brand new.

Janaih · 03/03/2021 13:24

I've just got an acer aspire 5. It doesn't have illuminated keyboard that you want but other acers do. It was about 580 pounds.
Like you I found the choice overwhelming! Argos customer reviews were quite helpful, I bought from currys in the end though.

pourmeanotherglass · 03/03/2021 13:27

DD1 is still using the HP laptop we bought when she was 11, so 7.5 years ago. Will ger her a new one for uni, but she doesnt want to change before then as hers has all her files on it.
As that has lasted so well, we've just got DD2 a new HP 14 inch laptop from John Lewis. Has 8MB ram and 256 Gb ssd, but i dont think the keyboard is backlit. Not a problem for DD2, but would be for some people.

bathorshower · 03/03/2021 13:33

Would you consider second hand - I'm typing on an 8 year old Dell with 16Gb RAM, though a bit low on SSD memory.

My point is that there have been machines out there that meet your spec for quite a while, and you might get more bang for your buck, so to speak.

@CassandraCross the acer I had was murder from just a few weeks after I bought it, retailer was not at all helpful. But also I failed to assert myself as a consumer, won't make that mistake again. I very much regret not returning the damn thing! I can be stubborn to my own detriment and was determined to make it work.

@Janaih I haven't found the Currys reviews very descriptive so I'll check out the Argos ones thanks

Lighting in my place isn't great and as I live in Scotland daylight hours are minimal especially in winter and even in daytime can be poor eg I already have my lights on today! It's gloomy here - hence need for backlit keyboard

@pourmeanotherglass does she not backup her files?

I was always taught to always backup regularly, it's stood me in good stead and I do so a number of ways. I'm talking when I first backed up filed it was to tape! Grin (told you I was old) that workplace had 5 tapes one for each weekday so that files were backed up for a week when I first worked there. Then we had a server problem cause a major loss and after that we moved to monthly backup and later quarterly - also to tape. Took ages! More recently I use iCloud, and even emailing/messaging files and info to myself, the emailing I started at uni as the uni servers had repeated issues and students couldn't backup to cloud at that point and discs/thumb drives are easily lost physically (though I used these too)

With cloud storage it's then very easy to download to the new device.

All that said I think devices should be built to last longer - whole other thread!

Definitely new not second hand or refurbed had terrible experiences with that before

Chromebook was one of the refurbed ones - awful! Not just the "innards" but things like the charger port literally fell out! Keys stuck badly etc just a nightmare

Wish I could stretch to a MacBook but not only unaffordable but fairly limited software wise I believe?

I’m at an appointment this afternoon but I have a Which subscription and there are several pc magazine websites I can check for specific reviews.

With chrome books you have to be aware of issues downloading some external software.

Graphista · 03/03/2021 14:41

@Comefromaway I also have a which subscription but still find the info overwhelming and that it requires me to have more knowledge than I do. Their best buys also (understandably) tend to be on the pricey side.

I'll check the individual reviews of the ones on the list I'll post later on which myself so please don't feel you need to do that. I wouldn't know which pc sites to trust myself

It would be so kind and so helpful if you could give me some guidance?

Really appreciate the help and guidance from all of you

Work have me a surface pro and it's fab!

PickAChew · 03/03/2021 15:50

This looks promising from the dell outlet. I think prices are ex vat, mind. outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/InventorySearch.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdfb1&l=en&s=dfb&brandid=2

PickAChew · 03/03/2021 15:52

Bah, duff link. It's this one

What laptop do you have and do you rate it?
Graphista · 03/03/2021 15:54

@itbemay1 thanks for the recommendation

@PickAChew while I thank you for your posts that's refurbed which I am absolutely not interested in plus it needs to be from either Argos or Currys

OP posts:
PickAChew · 03/03/2021 16:09

Well I wouldn't trust currys' current claims of what they have available as they have a tendency to take people's money and not deliver the goods but good luck with your search.

Graphista · 03/03/2021 16:19

I will check with them before ordering thank you.

OP posts:
Janaih · 03/03/2021 16:54

I ordered from currys on weds and it was delivered on Friday.

Comefromaway · 03/03/2021 17:43

I ordered from Curry’s last Saturday afternoon, it said delivery by Friday. I got an email saying it would be delivered Tuesday then Monday morning I woke to a text saying it would be there within the hour!

Graphista · 03/03/2021 17:53

Ugh! That's worrying. I need deliveries to come when I am expecting them for a load of reasons.

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 03/03/2021 18:02

You can pay extra for next day delivery. I didn’t mind as long as dd got it before she goes back to college this weekend. I knew she, dh and Ds were all at home (even if they were all in class).

Graphista · 03/03/2021 18:16

I'm happy to pay for next day delivery in order to receive delivery on a day I specify, that's fine by me

Browsing Argos now who are really low on stock! And apparently not delivering in my postcode at all! No idea why it must be losing them sales surely? Bizarre

Graphista · 03/03/2021 18:17

I've now resorted to creating a spreadsheet too, was getting too confusing

Asus Zenbook 14". The mouse pad doubles as a number pad so it's small but still has that feature. It's small and light but not too small. It's also has a metal frame rather than cheap plastic. I got the i5 16gb and it's really fast. The Dell reviews are awful for low and mid range laptops. You'd have to go for the xps if you want a Dell.
