Dd being sent up to hospital

Don’t know if I’m worrying too much or not worrying enough!

She’s 14 and has been excessively tired, sleeping 16 hours a day, headaches and dizziness and has lost weight.

She had a blood test at the doctors last week, spoke to the doctor today who said it all came back within normal limits, but he wants her to go up to the hospital this afternoon to see the paediatricians there.

If the blood test was normal then what can the hospital do that the gp couldn’t? I’m a bit flustered tbh

Someone calm my nerves please!

Oh poor you. You must be worried.
He may just want someone with more expertise in paeds to review her case. Great that he’s not brushing her & you off and he’s looking for answers.

HeartOfInk · 02/03/2021 13:45

I'd be far happier with a doctor that said "I don't know what's going on, I'd like a specialist to see her." than one who says "I don't know what's going on, it can't be serious, stop moaning."
Hope she's ok.

Mumdiva99 · 02/03/2021 13:46

They can spend more time with her, they can apply their expertise, they can repeat tests but get results more quickly. Please don't panic.

Does she eat properly? If she isn't ingesting nutrients she would get all those symptoms... maybe your doctor wants a second opinion.

You should be more worried if he fobbed you off. Good luck. I hope she recovers soon.

Horrible to have to go to the hospital- that’s a worry in of itself. But they are best place to do more precise testing with better equipment.

Lots of luck Flowers

Froppysue · 02/03/2021 13:49

Oh very true, thank you everyone. Even dd said they’ll probably say it’s just a virus, but the gp has been really good with her.

She eats well yes, doctor was worried about her weight though.

Has your gp checked for glandular fever?
When my niece had it they didn't chk until I told my dsil to ask.

She actually had glandular fever when she was 4, she was in hospital for 2 weeks with it really poorly, I don’t think they can get it twice can they?

Has she had Covid? Could it be post Covid fatigue (long Covid)? There's an article about it in the Guardian today. Have you asked for a copy of her blood test results? It might be that whilst they're all ok she's at the bottom end of what's normal?

We're in a similar situation with my DS. Again blood tests all ok though they did pick up on him having joint hypermobility at the hospital and since he's going through a growth spurt, they though the fatigue was probably a result of that.

Hope you get somewhere with your DD's appointment.

SirGawain · 02/03/2021 14:15

If the doctor couldn’t find any obvious explanation for you daughters obvious symptoms he is right to refer her to a specialist. Not every ailment can be diagnosed with blood tests.

Froppysue · 02/03/2021 14:55

Thanks everyone, we’re 5 mins away now so will keep you updated.

She’s never had covid, no.

Exactly this. I hope it’s all ok, although if they do find something they can treat her and make her feel better so that’s good too.
memememe · 02/03/2021 16:16

im hoping its all ok for you, my son had similar and the hosp just wanted to chat about his diet and sleep etc.

Curlymam88 · 02/03/2021 16:25

Sounds similar to when I was diagnosed with diabetes. I'm assuming they check this in her bloods?

DwangelaForever · 02/03/2021 16:28

Hoping all OK for her Flowers

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/03/2021 16:30

Glad the GP has suggested a visit - I hate the "come back if theres no improvement in 3 weeks" type of responses.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/03/2021 16:45

Hope all is ok with DDThanks

Reallyhadenough · 02/03/2021 17:00

Please ask for her eyes to be tested. Good luck

Lululu22 · 02/03/2021 17:16

Hope you get some answers quickly, poor lass. My first thought was Type 1 Diabetes but you didn’t mention that she has been drinking or wee’ing excessively.

2bazookas · 02/03/2021 17:44

A GP has limited equipment and staff . A hospital can offer a variety of scans, xrays, monitors, and a wide range of specialist doctors.

Crookairroad · 02/03/2021 17:46

Hoping she is ok Op.

Alternista · 02/03/2021 17:47

Also hoping you’ve been seen quickly and are getting some answers.

tyboi · 02/03/2021 18:06

Was also going to suggest diabetes but presumably the GP ruled that out

ohwaitthatwasme · 02/03/2021 18:11

I hope all is well OP. my DD was like this when she was 13/14 and missed months of school. the best I got from the GP was a virus. if it helps she did make a long. but full recovery and a few years later its hard to believe she was so unwell

lazylump72 · 02/03/2021 18:17

Hi OP just dropping by to wish you all well and I hope for a speedy recovery for your dd. I have not long come out of hospital myself so I can assure you they are very safe and the staff are as wonderful and kind and proffessional as always even in these times,so hopefully a bit of reassurance for you there,

Positivelysober · 02/03/2021 18:24

Glad she is being seen, as some of the others said I'd be fair happier with a gp doing this than telling me to come back in few weeks.
Hope she is doing ok.
