Dd being sent up to hospital

Don’t know if I’m worrying too much or not worrying enough!

She’s 14 and has been excessively tired, sleeping 16 hours a day, headaches and dizziness and has lost weight.

She had a blood test at the doctors last week, spoke to the doctor today who said it all came back within normal limits, but he wants her to go up to the hospital this afternoon to see the paediatricians there.

If the blood test was normal then what can the hospital do that the gp couldn’t? I’m a bit flustered tbh

Someone calm my nerves please!

Some of those symptoms are like post viral fatigue symptoms.

I hope she's ok Thanks
I agree with a pp who said it's good they are investigating it instead of fobbing you off, although I can understand why it would make you worried.

GoneCrazy · 02/03/2021 19:22

Hope she’s ok Flowers

Glad the GP has suggested a visit - I hate the "come back if theres no improvement in 3 weeks" type of responses.

Me too.
You’re probably more nervous because your GP has sent her to hospital as usually this never happens but it could just be that the GP is on the ball rather than anything being seriously wrong. I do hope she is ok.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 02/03/2021 19:46

I’d echo the pp’s above querying type 1 diabetes. Try to be reassured that’s your daughter is being properly investigated, it’s hard to treat symptoms when you don’t know the cause, so she’s n the best place.

User1511 · 02/03/2021 19:47

How did it go?

Terminallysleepdeprived · 02/03/2021 19:52

Hope she is OK op.

You say she hasn't had covid, but has she been bear anyone who has? A friends son had similar symptoms but combined with vomiting and diarrhoea. He was admitted very ill with this covid related inflammation illness. You don't need to have had covid, just been near someone who has it for it to be triggered. It may be that you gp is just being cautious as this can be fatal.

Trumplosttheelection · 02/03/2021 20:02

Could be coeliac? It doesn't always show up in bloods.

babbaloushka · 02/03/2021 20:17

Hope everything went ok.

LazyDaisy10 · 02/03/2021 20:49

I was thinking glandular fever too. I had it when I was 15 and the tiredness was unreal. I actually suffered for years after with the tiredness doctors said possibly post viral. I'm not sure if you can get it twice. Hope she's okFlowers

Whatandwhen · 02/03/2021 20:50

If she had glandular fever in the past, maybe she could be suffering from long term effects. I had a friend who went on to develop M.E after having glandular fever so that’s the only reason I suggest that (pretty rare though!)

Todaywillbegood · 02/03/2021 20:52

Hope she's doing ok.

catlovingdoctor · 02/03/2021 20:56

The thing with "within normal limits" is it can mask the fact a value is only 1 point away from being below or above normal. If a normal range for something is 80-100, if it's 80 it's borderline being too low.

I hope the further tests can reveal the cause of her symptoms and she feels better soon!

missnevermind · 02/03/2021 21:03

My son had Glandular fever which took him 18 months to get over but then he fell ill again and we thought it was the flu but it lasted 4 weeks and he was exhausted and food and water tasted funny, he lost a scary amount of weight and looked really unwell. He ended up slipping in and out of conscience and we had to call an ambulance. The Glandular Fever had damaged his pancreas and left him with type 1 diabetes and he was slipping In to a diabetic coma.

Fairly certain GPs are on the ball enough to interpret blood tests enough to know if anything on the outer limits of normal reconciles with a series of symptoms and act accordingly.

Impressed this GP was able to send someone straight to a children's ward for a non emergency. That's impossible where we are.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/03/2021 04:25

@MintyMabel that's what's get do at my hospital. They go through A&E to be eyeballed, then to the children's admission unit. Being brightly seen in A&E prevents really sick kids rocking up to the ward in peri-arrest.

YerAWizardHarry01 · 03/03/2021 04:32

How are you both OP?

Crunchymum · 03/03/2021 07:18

Hope all was OK with your DD @Froppysue

I'd be interested to know where you live that Paeds can see you the same day (I'm not being facetious, I'm jealous!) My DD has to wait for 4 months for an urgent referral Sad

My daughter had blood test for a dietary intolerance. They told me bloods all fine. When it hadn't resolved we went back to consultant and it turned out her bloods were over normal limits! Only 0.1 or something so minuscule but they were over!

After the specific tests it turned out yes she did have an allergy to something. Following their advice it was resolved in 2 weeks - I had been going about 2 years.

SunshineCake · 03/03/2021 07:44

I really hope your dd is okay.

My son was sent to hospital then the following week the GP scared me when she said results were in and he was a very poorly little boy. They all looked after him, and followed up, brilliantly and thankfully he has made a full recovery.
