Can I use chicken date stamped for today - tomorrow?

I've just realised that I've messed up and made pasta for tea when we were supposed to be using chicken which is stamped today. Can I save it in any way?

I was going to make it marinated and breadcrumbed - could I marinate it tonight and cook it tomorrow? Or put it in the marinade and then in the freezer over night?

Help!

I would.
Smell it first - it should be fine.
The chicken doesn't know the date on it.

Hadalifeonce · 01/03/2021 17:44

Yes, no problem. Just use it tomorrow, no need to freeze.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/03/2021 17:45

You will know if the chicken is off, but I’d be confident it will be fine tomorrow.

I wouldn't, you could cook it tonight in a casserole or curry, then refreidgerate and reheat tomorrow. Or cook it then have it cold or make a pie tomorrow,

Vetyveriohohoh · 01/03/2021 17:46

I’d cook today snd reheat tomorrow

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 01/03/2021 17:47

Yeah I would. As long as it smells ok it will be fine just a day over the use-by date.

If you’re worried you’d probably be better off cooking it thoroughly tonight and reheating tomorrow for dinner, but as you’re breadcrumbing it it may not reheat well.

User1511 · 01/03/2021 17:47

I’d cook today

Kinneddar · 01/03/2021 17:49

Itll be fine. Its not going to suddenly go off just because its a day past its date. Presumably it smells OK.

It wouldn't even cross my mind not to use it but then I tend to take dates as more of a guide and go by how things look/smell. So far that system has worked for me.

2typesofjungle · 01/03/2021 17:50

It'll be fine.

purplecorkheart · 01/03/2021 17:51

I am pretty wary of chicken but once the chicken smells ok I would use it. It does not know it has gone past midnight

Boscoforever · 01/03/2021 17:52

It's a guide on the stamp. If it looks alright and smells alright, its alright!
It will be fine to eat tomorrow.

ThePricklySheep · 01/03/2021 17:54

I’d cook it in curry or something today and then reheat. I know it won’t magically go off on the stroke of midnight, but the chances of it being off are going up with each day.

purplebagladylovesgin · 01/03/2021 17:55

Smell it. Chicken going off smells awful, chicken with no obvious smell means it's ok to cook. If chicken is stored in a very cold part of the fridge it can last an extra 5 days uncooked.

Chicken is one of the easy ones as it will stink when turning bad.

QueenOfLabradors · 01/03/2021 17:55

Can you adapt the recipe choice so that it is cooked tonight and allowed to cool naturally before going back in the fridge? Or freezer. This will reset the safe use date btw.

TheSandman · 01/03/2021 17:56

NO! The Chicken is preset programmed to become DEADLY POISONOUS at 12 midnight exactly! The only way to avoid this is to jump on a fast plane travelling west and stay ahead of the dateline until you've cooked it.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/03/2021 17:57

Argh - split opinion. My dc are super fussy and won't eat anything easy like casserole or saucy 🙄
Do we think that if I skipped marinade and breadcrumbed and cooked it tonight, that it would be nice to eat reheated tomorrow?

Damon you covid, ruining my chicken date stamp avoidance plans Grin

Yeah it would be if you do that OP. Why can't you marinade now and cook tonight, then reheat tomorrow though? That's what I'd do.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 01/03/2021 18:01

I wouldn’t, anything else, probably. Chicken, never.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 01/03/2021 18:03

Where's it from? I wouldn't trust Aldi chicken past its use-by date. Several times I've bought chicken from Aldi and its gone already a day or two before it. From anywhere else I'd say it'll be fine tomorrow, obviously give it the sniff test first though!

NoEffingWay · 01/03/2021 18:06

I would absolutely eat it tomorrow, most of my food has yellow stickers on it!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/03/2021 18:14

Right, thanks - I'm decided, best not to risk it, off to whack it in a marinade and I'll cook it later on.

OP posts:
HeartOfInk · 01/03/2021 19:34

I would because I reckon if the supermarkets put the actual use by date then statistically half the product would be off by that date and they would have constant complaints and refunds to field. So I go with there being a couple of days leeway with a use by date. —just don’t tell DH!—

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 01/03/2021 20:18

I would (and do). I was told by someone in the poultry industry that they build in a day’s leeway. Provided it smells ok and has been kept in the fridge, it’ll be fine.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/03/2021 20:51

Thanks - I'm chicken Wink so it's in the oven now.
