Dentists in the 90s - what could this have been

brahmslullaby · 26/02/2021 20:25

As a child age 6/7 in 1990 I remember going to the dentist and having the gas that put me to sleep. Waking up at home afterwards.

But my DM claims I had no fillings and perfect teeth though has tendencies to lie about stuff like that.

What else could it have been though? Any ideas?

Had a tooth extracted?

fassnk · 26/02/2021 20:26

having baby teeth removed?

Disressingtimes · 26/02/2021 20:26

I was thinking extraction.

wasnt that done sometimes to "make room" for adult teeth? so not necessarily because they had cavities.

IndigoApple · 26/02/2021 20:27

Adult teeth removed for overcrowding. I had this. Inhaled gas and thought I’d been asleep for hours but it was 5 minutes. Walked home after!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 26/02/2021 20:29

I had three teeth removed when i was 5/6 to make room for adult teeth, had gas and it freaked me out and until i was about 25 i was petrified of the dentist because of it. I was also sick as a dog.

TheWaif · 26/02/2021 20:30

I had teeth removed, one in the 80s (baby tooth) and one in the 90s (adult). I wasn't put to sleep for either.

brahmslullaby · 26/02/2021 20:31

So removing baby teeth to make room for the adult teeth?

Possibly

Madcats · 26/02/2021 20:47

Back in the 80's certainly dentists used to be allowed to administer general anaesthetic.

The roots on my baby teeth were lengthy so few simply wobbled out.

I think I had at least 3 scheduled removals, possibly 4. I distinctly remember asking for GA for some pre-molars when I was 14/15. I didn't fancy watching!

TheDuchessofHaste · 26/02/2021 20:49

I had this three times because in those days serial extractions were common. I've had 13 teeth out in total and 10 under the age of ten. I have perfectly straight teeth but a really small jaw because of this. It was the fashion for dentists to do this and it was only on the last occasion I went to a dental 'centre' for wantnof a better word rather than the regular dentist room for the GA. count your teeth you should have 32

DIshedUp · 26/02/2021 20:59

Its probably not to make room for adult teeth at that age?

Honestly I suspect your mum is lying/misremembering. Its much more likely to be removal due to decay

RandomMess · 26/02/2021 21:00

I only have 24 adult teeth including wisdom teeth 😭 I had my last gas at the dentist Christmas 1993 which apparently was very late before it got completely banned due to several deaths over the years 😳

TheDuchessofHaste · 26/02/2021 21:05

I only have 24 too :( although I have a wisdom tooth still in that never emerged. The danger we were in....it's petrifying

Madcats · 26/02/2021 21:49

I have 27 teeth and 2 fillings. My top adult teeth (6) all grew behind the back ones. I did go flying over the top of my bike as a 5/6 year old, but I do have a small jaw.

DD's adult canines are growing over her baby teeth, so I suspect we'll need to sort that soon.

CassiaLime · 26/02/2021 22:03

Back in the late 70s I can remember sat in the waiting room to see the dentist with my mum.

He was working away in his room with a patient and i clearly remember that the door to his room was like a double door that pulled across and met in the middle

This left a strip that I could see through. Anyway, the dentist put a black suction cup over the patients mouth - gas, clearly - and what looked like a huge sanitary towel under the chin of the patient and literally was almost kneeling on his chest to pull his tooth out with blood coming out onto the bib thing

So yeah ... that moment there, aged about 7, gave me a lifelong fear of dentists

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 26/02/2021 22:05

Might have been. I had my baby molars removed because my adult one's were pushing up but the baby ones wouldn't fall out to make way.

boredinthouse · 26/02/2021 22:05

I had this in the very early 90's. I remember hallucinating that the dentist was chasing me. I've had a fear of dentists ever since.

orchidsonabudget · 26/02/2021 22:26

I have 28 teeth
I had extractions for overcrowding

SuperSange · 26/02/2021 22:30

I had a couple of GA at my dentist in the 80's, both fit overcrowding. There was a little recovery room.

Blibbyblobby · 26/02/2021 23:22

As a child in the early 80s I had two adult teeth taken out for overcrowding - the ones that would have been fourth from the front. I still remember the crunch sound. (Not in a traumatic way, just I remember it distinctly).

It wasn't gas for me, it was a local, but I know gas was sometimes used.

Ask the dentist next time you get to see one. They will know instantly if you've had adult teeth removed.

Or if you remember at your last checkup when the dentist counted the teeth out loud to the assistant, did they skip a number? That would mean a missing tooth.

Calibrachoa · 26/02/2021 23:24

Dd had sedation for a tooth extraction

cannotchange · 26/02/2021 23:37

I had a GA at the dentist in the late 70's as a child, I can still remember the black mask and the smell of the gas - I don't know what it was for as I generally have good teeth.

Quite scary as that would never happen now at the dentist - my DD may have to have to have a surgical extraction and we have been referred to the dental hospital

Oversize · 26/02/2021 23:39

24 teeth here too. 32! That's a massive mouth then to hold all those teeth?
Off to Google.

Nsky · 26/02/2021 23:42

I had a black mask over me, gassing me to take 4 un enamelled teeth out at12
