Dentists in the 90s - what could this have been

As a child age 6/7 in 1990 I remember going to the dentist and having the gas that put me to sleep. Waking up at home afterwards.

But my DM claims I had no fillings and perfect teeth though has tendencies to lie about stuff like that.

What else could it have been though? Any ideas?

Did anyone else have a GA by needle? I didn't have gas. I remember it clearly.

I can still remember the smell of the gas. They let my mum stay in with me until I was asleep and I remember she stopped them just plonking it over my mouth. She told them to waft it gently under my nose first which was obviously great advice snd much less terrifying.

count your teeth you should have 32 I have 28 teeth, as does my mother, just no wisdom teeth. Not everyone gets them or gets them on time. Someone I knew started getting them in her 50s.

I was put under by a dentist in the mid 80s, I was about 7. I had a bad reaction and woke up in hospital. Could have killed me.

I can't believe they were allowed to do that.

Totally irrelevant to the thread, but this is really reminding me of a story I read in primary school. A girl was put under with gas at the dentist and had a vivid dream about a little girl called Kirsty being knocked down and killed by a horse and cart. Then when she woke up and left the surgery and noticed the road was called Kirsty's Lane

I had teeth removed in the sixties with gas . I can remember the weird dreams I had while asleep and the smell of the rubber mask. When I had my children in the eighties I couldn’t use the gas and air as the mask was the same and the smell made me feel sick. I also can’t stand the smell of hot water bottles !

32 is the normal number of teeth! Though lots of people only have 28 as wisdom teeth haven’t come through (yet). I have 30. If you only have 24 you must have had some extracted, or not had a full set grow but this is very rare,

I had 2 baby teeth out at about 10. Definitely not for decay. I think to make room for adult teeth. I wonder why though, wouldn’t they have fallen out themselves in time? I remember it clearly as the tooth fairy bought me more money than usual 😁

I’m a retired anaesthetist. In the bad old days, dentists were allowed to give anaesthetics without even a second colleague present, let alone a specialist anaesthetist. There was even an anaesthetic machine operated by a foot pedal, so the lone dentist had his hands free to do the extractions!
It took several patient deaths in dental chairs before it became mandatory to have an anaesthetist present, and then later for all dental anaesthetics to be performed in clinics or hospitals with full resuscitation facilities.
In the 80’s, I remember driving to dental practices in rough areas of Dundee, with a defibrillator (borrowed from my teaching hospital) in the boot, hoping my car would still have all its wheels when I came out again!
