What proper grown up things have you never bought new?

Was thinking today that I have never bought a new fridge freezer or table and chairs . I'm 50 years old and not even a proper adult yet . I'm not particularly poor or overly environmentally friendly just have always made do with what was there when I moved in to rentals or bought second hand . There's probably other things too .

A house.

Tequilasun · 25/02/2021 20:44

A car....my dh has always helped me choose a car and negotiated a price. I've been driving for over 30 years!

AdaFuckingShelby · 25/02/2021 20:45

Wardrobe, car, dining table. There must be other things too.

happytoday73 · 25/02/2021 20:45

A car and a house.... That's probably it....

daffodil10 · 25/02/2021 20:50

Furniture, cars, house, business items etc etc

Susie477 · 25/02/2021 20:50

A car. I have had some very nice cars, and I currently drive a Mercedes convertible, but I always buy them used.

‘Posh’ cutlery, crockery & glassware which sits unused in cupboards. Complete waste of money. All our stuff, except DP’s expensive Japanese knives, is from Ikea & supermarkets.

A dining table, we bought a big old farmhouse style one.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/02/2021 20:56

A car. Always second hand.

Dining furniture. Still on the set that DH bought when he first bought a house. It's probably going to be a long time as it was a good set!

RatherLostPenguins · 25/02/2021 20:59

Other than car and house like others have said I can only think of a washing machine.

When I first moved out a friend had one for sale which lasted me for years and when that broke another friend was selling one. I gave it away when DH and I moved in together and kept his one and then the last time we moved we were planning on buying a new machine as that one had just broken and one had been left in our new house so we got to keep it. I've had to buy every other kitchen appliance new at some point though.

Graphista · 25/02/2021 21:02

I'm 48 and there's loads!

House being the main one and I doubt I ever will.

Dining table, I've only ever bought one and that was second hand but it was gorgeous second hand! From a charity shop, solid oak, carved, beautiful. Sadly had to get rid when split from ex as neither of us had the room for it.

3 piece suite or sofas, Drawers and wardrobes, coffee tables, end tables... but again mainly as I've found far nicer in second hand places. I've had new but cheap bookcases and desks (mainly IKEA and Argos) but quite honestly they were crap!

New isn't always better

My bed also new but cheap and I hope to get a decent one at some point. I feel a bit weird about 2nd hand beds though. I might consider a 2nd hand frame but it would have to be a new mattress.

Pyewackect · 25/02/2021 21:03

House , car, furniture, baby clothes, golf clubs, wedding dress , lawn mower.

Mintjulia · 25/02/2021 21:04

A car, a house, a bicycle ( both mine have been presents), a wardrobe.

TankGirl97 · 25/02/2021 21:04

I'm 40 and been with dh over 20 years, we've just bought our first ever new bed. Married, 3 kids, several houses bought and sold, but the new bed has made me feel like a proper grown up!

I've never bought a new car either. Mostly I buy second hand everything for cost and environmental reasons.

MrsAvocet · 25/02/2021 21:05

Car for me too - always used and to be honest I would carry on doing that even if I had a lot more money. New cars depreciate so much the minute you drive them away.
We've only had 2 dining table/chair sets too. The first one was given to us my my then boss who was getting a new one and the one we have now was from an antique shop.
Also musical instruments- all 2nd hand . And boats. We have bought several "fixer uppers" over the last 30 odd years. And never seem to learn

chipsandpeas · 25/02/2021 21:06

cooker - still using the same one that was in this house when i bought it
suppose the house as well

noname55 · 25/02/2021 21:09

TV! I've always had a family member's old one.
Sofa. Family member again.
Fridge/freezer - was here when I moved in and still going.

MrsTophamHat · 25/02/2021 21:11

I'm gradually getting rid of my hand me downs!

A cooker
My iron
A laundry basket
Bedside tables
Wardrobes
Coffee table

oldsoulrebel · 25/02/2021 21:25

Thanks . I'm not feeling so bad now . Also just realised last month was the first time I bought new coat hangers , in fact I have one coat hanger still that belonged to
my grandmother and she's been dead 30 years

A car
A table - we have the one that was in my parents house when I was growing up
Cooker

PattyPan · 25/02/2021 21:31

When I bought my house the appliances were included as the seller was the landlord and didn't need them. My cutlery, crockery, dining room furniture, desk, chairs and tv are all family hand me downs as well! The house is Victorian so also not new.
I don't drive so have never owned a car.
I've never bought hangers - I just use the ones they give you in the shop!

MrsAvocet · 25/02/2021 21:32

There's nothing wrong with that oldsoulrebel. My sister and I both have pans, cake tins etc that our Mum used and they may not have been new to her. I've got tablecloths and crockery that were my husband's great grandmother's (though to be honest I don't use those very much as they are too precious.) DH has loads of tools from his Dad and Grandad. If something still does it's job it makes sense to keep using it. I A lot of old stuff is better made and lasts longer than modern versions anyway.

sqirrelfriends · 25/02/2021 21:34

I've never bought a new car and have also never bought a dishwasher as it's always come with the house.

FredaFlintstone · 25/02/2021 21:36

A car. They depreciate so quickly (and I have zero interest in cars past the basics so don't care if my car is older or unfashionable) that I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy a new one.

It blows my mind just how much money people are willing to spend on a car, especially those that take loans or car finance for one.

Chanel05 · 25/02/2021 21:57

Lawnmower! Always got them off freecycle

ghislaine · 25/02/2021 21:59

Car (on to our fifth now)
House (now in our third house, each at least 100 years old)
Piano & piano stool
Other musical instruments - guitar, clarinet, keyboard
Sugar bowl (I inherited one from my lovely great aunt)
Dining table and chairs
Sideboard (inherited from grandmother)
Mirrors (I prefer antiques and foxed glass)

OhToBeASeahorse · 25/02/2021 22:02

Wedding dress and cars. Dress was second hand and then I sold it, cars we've never bought new
